The Loveable Loo is a compost toilet that requires no water, plumbing, pipes, vents, drains, electricity, or urine separation. It's a toilet that makes gardens rather than sewage. It's designed to collect toilet material so that it can be composted in a compost bin. This 11-minute video provides a brief overview on the toilet and the processes. Filmed by Joseph Jenkins, author of the Humanure Handbook (www.amazon.com...) and The Compost Toilet Handbook (www.amazon.com....
These may be available from loveableloo.st... (Ph: 207-558-1884; email: satisfaction@loveableloo.store.

We've used one of these for 10+ years. Tip: line your toilet bucket with paper for easy cleaning. We did this and found that junk mail and waste paper works fantastically. Cleanup is a snap, as most of the paper slides out when emptying into the compost pile. A simple rinse and scrub, and turn the bucket over to dry. Tip 2: Use sawdust from hardwood heating pellets. We add a bit of water to the pellet bucket, to turn them back into sawdust. Stir, and then use the moistened sawdust for cover. Works like a charm.

Do keep in mind that what you uptake in your diet will impact what will end up in your compost - so if/while you are taking medications, you want to avoid adding that waste to the composting matter going into the garden until a few days (at least) to allow the medications to leave your system before resuming the process.

I had two buckets and lined the one in use with newspaper. Newspaper is supposed to be 100% biodegradable, ink and all. I'd dump the in-use bucket and rinse, then leave it in fresh air while the other bucket was in use. Swapping them out gave each bucket time to air. Probably about to go aback to this method in a rural location. Beats all hell out of having to run plumbing and wasting precious water down a nasty septic tank.

I like that you add new videos, thank you. I have been practicing your Humanure routine for 6 years. I wonder if I use enough cover material in my bin? and if my biological sponge is deep enough based on looking at your compost bin. You said it is new and its already up to your waist. I use about 12" of used coffee filters and straw for my biological "sponge" and i use lots of used coffee grounds from a local coffee shop mixed with wood shavings for a heavy toilet cover, so perhaps mine is not that stinky to start with.. Our bin does not stink but sometimes it smells like its "working' and the bin temps are 140-160 degrees all year round in southern California. I just started a new bin this month and the temp is already up to 130 degrees F. I know this is not an exact science, but its interesting to revisit what you do after some experience myself. I too have added small dead animals, but nothing the size of that raccoon. I don't use as much straw as you use but I end up with lots of straw in the end. Do you mix the straw into your garden? Or use it to start your next bin? Your finished compost looks wonderful, fine & clean of straw. My finished compost is chunky from the wood shavings and has lots of straw in it. I made a sifter for the compost, but never end up using it. Also do you run into the decaying raccoon each time you dig in & add to your compost bin?
@jcjenkins01
@jcjenkins01 8 лет назад
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YQUvmij8fkI.html I avoid anything that's wood and chunky. And yes, the straw goes into the next bin as biological sponge. I don't use straw in my garden very often because it will sprout grass. Sometimes I need it to cover small plants in the spring to protect from frost damage. I don't have much of a problem running into the carcasses when adding new material to the piles. Sometimes you can feel them when you shove the 20" thermometer in, but they dissolve pretty quickly in that hot pile.

Thanks for the reply. Also I wanted to ask if you ever see these creatures that look like grubs in the compost when it is hot? I just created a new bin in a new location and it is crawling with big grub-type creatures and it is 130 degrees when I open up the pile, I thought it would be too hot.

And what about using something easier to acquire than sawdust, like lawn mower discharge, or mulched leaves or pine needles? So no urine separation is required or desired when using a true composting toilet system such as the humanure system..

What I want to know is where do you get this cover material? Sawdust from trees isn't very common around here. Shavings or chips, yes. Dust, no. Can something else be used, such as peat moss or coco coir?

Aelanna64 There was a point where I was using a version of this and used the shavings and just added coffee help with the limited odor.

Harwood heating pellets turn to sawdust when a bit of water is added. $5.49 a 40 pound bag at Tractor Supply.

James Kniskern how dob you get this to work, how much water do you add for this?
@jameskniskern2261
@jameskniskern2261 7 лет назад
I put about 1/3 of a 5 gallon bucket of pellets. Then add some water. Stir. Don't worry, you won't ruin the sawdust. If you don't have enough water to release all of the pellets you can add more, or just use it in your toilet bucket with the unreleased pellets. They will absorb liquid and expand. If you add too much water, which is difficult to do, you can always add a few more pellets. You can do this.
