Billy Gibbons is a huge car enthusiast, and this 1932 Ford Custom is one of his prized possessions. Videos like this are why MTV was invented. And ZZ Top was already about 15 or more years into their career, so they weren't really "young" at this point. They were well established, but the MTV thing was new for them.
I was wondering that what that was. So much of that is before my time but one time I had a friend that had a 1939 DeSoto that I used to drive and it reminded me of that. Great knowledge man!
ZZ Top has a uncredited role in "Back to the Future III". At the Town Dance in 1885 the band is ZZ Top. ZZ Top has a song that plays at the end of the movie. The song is called "Doubleback".
More ZZ Top please! “Tube Snake Boogie”, “Got Me Under Pressure”, “Pearl Necklace” and “Cheap Sunglasses” are a good next step into the rabbit hole that is ZZ Top
They are an 80's group to me. They had their wonderful Eliminator trilogy of videos, this, "Sharp Dressed Man", and "Legs", as well as the follow-up video "Sleeping Bag" from their next album. All four are great songs too.
We used to crank this song all the time ZZTop. Gimme all your lovin was just a rocker back in the day. Love your reactions esp the way Amber LOVES DRUMS!! #AMBERSWAY
ZZ Top are legends!!! 🎸🎸🥁 The Afterburner LP is fantastic!! I love you guys so much!! You don't understand how much your videos bring joy into my life!! Thank you!! 🥰🙏💗
My favorite is Deguello, also love their first & El Loco. Too many people forget ZZ were superstars WAY before Sharped Dress Man. Check out …. Arrested for Driving while blind, or Brown Sugar, or Lowdown in the Streets. Best ZZ is old ZZ !!!! IMO 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🎸🎸🥁
The three ladies (not always the same crew) went around in the Deuce Coupe righting wrongs and putting bullies in their place. The video of "Burger Man" is hilarious, with somewhat ambiguous lyrics, to say the least! :-)
Learned to drive with this album....it sounds hard, but it's really chill. Legs, Got me under pressure, I got the six, sharp dressed man, Gimmie all your lovin'.....really the whole album was solid.
I love how Billy came up with the song (Cheap Sunglasses). He said that he and his wife went to the store. He got to looking at the stuff in the store. He said he could have bought anything in the store including the store. But, the only thing that he liked was a dollar pair of cheap sunglasses. Only Gibbons.
ZZ Top was definitely an awesome little 3 piece band with a long proud history and a fantastic library to dive into. It was a common theme in many of ZZ Top’s videos to present the keys to some deserving underdog guy or girl.
I have a friend who was stationed in Texas around 1970 and came home on leave and told me I have to listen to this band who played in the bar he was in and their album for sale at the bar. That band was ZZ top.
I hadn't really heard of of ZZ Top back in 1983 when this single first came out. I was 13, and wasn't really listening to different types of music but this song made an impact. Now, whenever I hear the drum intro to this song, I immediately recognise it and prepare myself for the next couple of minutes of great rock.
Billy Gibbons was originally in a band called the Moving Sidewalks. He hooked up with Frank Beard and Michael "Dusty" Hill to form ZZ Top. Billy says they chose the name so their records would be in the very last record bin in the music stores, so they wouldn't be overlooked and were easy to find. Anyone who ever shopped at The Wherehouse or Musicland knows that strategy worked.
"Gimme All Your Lovin'" is the 1st video in a trilogy with the "car/girls/key" theme. "Sharp Dressed Man" is part 2 and "Legs" is part 3. You should definitely do "Legs" next.
I feel like another part of the theme in this trilogy of videos, is the band and their girls “lifting up“ a young man or woman who isn’t in the easiest place in their life.
Gimme All Your Lovin' and Sharp Dressed Man are from same album, Eliminator. That custom '33 Ford Coupe is called ZZTop Eliminator was commissioned by late Billy Gibbons. Car was used for both videos.
ZZ Top's 70s music was more blues rock... This is their 80s sound. Try some of their older stuff like "Blue Jeans Blues" or the medly "Waiting for the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago". Edit: Oh I almost forgot... "Tube Snake Boogie" Dang that one will get you chair dancing... if you like a thumping bass drum you should try "Velcro Fly" by them.
Gotta love those '80s hairstyles. :) Yes, ZZ Top is iconic and you always know them when you hear them. They defined that "Texas Rock" sound. And yeah, every young man in the '80s wanted that car! RIP Dusty. We miss you.
Eliminator was ZZ Top's biggest selling album, in large part due to their videos. Their music has always been amazing, but they tapped into a new audience with these videos and the MTV world loved it and so the videos took on the theme and the car was the main attraction. The guy who gets bullied or beaten down then comes out on top with the car and the girls. PERFECTION!
Born and raised in Tulsa (in rural NY now) who was 15 in 1970, ZZ Top used to come to Tulsa and OKC a LOT! Their slogan was "That Little Ol' Band From Texas". And that's what they were. A lead guitar, bass, and drums. And their shows were not to be believed! Especially the ones with the live longhorn bulls! lol
It’s their bluesy, funky Texas rock!!!! Love it these were a three part video series from the eliminator album, I believe the car is also called the eliminator. Third song is, legs, look forward to seeing you do that one.
I got to see them on their 50th Anniversary Tour in Melbourne, FL. An excellent show! I've been listening to this since it was new. Trust me, check out more of this band,
Before they really made it big, I went to an old airplane hanger that was transformed into a bar. It was off Pacific Coast Highway in San Diego. They played on the bar and the tables were cleared for people to sit on the floor. I met them after when they went into a backroom till everyone left so they could. I said your going to be Great one day..
Being a 60's/70's boy I still prefer the Texas Blues "Little Ol' Band from Texas" version of ZZ Top -- but you gotta hand it to them for adapting to the 80s without completely losing their souls. Always really well-played and well-produced songs! This was their first album and first single where they went with a very very basic beat and some synths and some 80's style and it took us fans a bit of time to adjust but we got used to it. I only rarely changed the station on this song (mainly if already heard it twice that same day) and most of us older fans got used to it in fairly short order.
You guys really need to listen to some really old ZZ Top from back in like the 70’s when they were really bluesy….like their first album ….pre-beard era even
This is from the 80s which is their most popular songs. But for something completely different but so awesome is from the early 2000s a song called Tramp. I think you will love it!
This is 1 of their more Pop songs, which is a great, feel good song. If you want to hear Billy's true guitar talent then "I Need You Tonight" is a must. Just like David Gilmore, you don't need to play fast to make music that hits you in the chest. In my Top 10 guitar solos, Comfortably Numb has 2 solos in it, while "I Need You Tonight" has 2 more. Get that? 4 solos in the Top 10 are in 2 songs. 2000 Blues is also a Goodun.
Side note, They had some Amazing Hot Rods If you notice the stripes on the side of this Red Car she drives up in is one their favorite, spells, ZZ. They made all their Rods Hot and Cool as Them . Billy Gibbins needs to be on your Top Five list.of Great Guitar players still around. So happy to have been at their last tour before we lost the bass Dusty Hill. 🙏
So I’m sure you probably already know this or somebody has already commented about this, but ironically enough the only guy without a beard is named Frank Beard. Also in the TV show “King of the Hill” one of the members of the band, Dusty Hill, is Hank Hill’s cousin.
This was actually the 1st of 3 Z Z Top music videos from their 1983 10X platinum selling record 'Eliminator'... the concept was the same - Z Z Top are in the background, watching the action while helping out in the romance. 'Sharp dressed man' was the 2nd video... and 'Legs' was the third, w/ Z Z Top helping out a girl get a makeover and get her man 😁Huge MTV hit back in the day...
I grew up going to zz shows 70’s-2000’s…what everyone forgets is that they can grab amps and play……in garage or stadium. Garage music. I love it. All the Texas boys are garage bands, gritty.
Yes, in the Music Video 80's, they had a theme running through their videos with the classic Red Car, the girls, the key, and, or course, the beards. They had a great appearance in the third "Back To The Future" movie, as an Old West band.
When I was a high school kid in the early 70s I watched ZZ on a late night UK prog rock show.Billy was a well built young man, full beard😮 in a shit charity shop outfit,up yours glam rock!! The guitar roars and sings! That's how it's done..
This band is the epitome of one of our mottos back in the day: "If it's too loud, you're too old!". It drove our parents crazy, too! Just wait until your kids start banging out music! :)
Everyone keeps doing 80s ZZ Top, which is cool, but their older 70s stuff is much more down and dirty, Texas boogie blues rock. Try one or two of these (if you're still reading): * Nasty Dogs and Funky Kings * Tush * Heard it on the X * Waiting for the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago (one of those double songs that have to be played together) * I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide * Cheap Sunglasses * Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers * Just Got Paid
Fun fact ZZTOP was voted one of the loudest bands in the eighties I went to the Eliminator tour in Phoenix AZ back in eighties and we were in the nose bleed section if veterans coliseum and they were loud and proud first time seeing my Das get buzzed with all the pot smoke in there 😀 on a contact high but these were the days when smoking was allowed in public places
The truly great music never loses its lustre. Never ages. I was 23 when this album"Eliminator" went to the top. Bout to turn 61 now, and it sounds as good now as it did then.
So proud to brag that ZZ Top graduated from my high school, Galena Park High School, yes many years B4 I graduated, many autographed photos of them n our lobby! They rock!!!
My Head’s in Mississippi just hits different when they are actually playing it in Mississippi! The crowd went crazy. Love that little ole band from Texas!
More pop singles from a blues band. Check out "Things I Used to Do" or, just about any other song they did, on their albums, for their real sound. Jimmie Vaughn, lead guitarist, was Stevie Ray Vaughn's older brother, taught SRV lots of what he did. Jimmy is also a collector of Hot Rods and Custom cars, as is Billy Gibbons.
As others have said, put "I Need You Tonight" . And No, it is not the same song by INXS with a similar name. We used to joke about it being a song the brought out the "inner stripper" in everyone! It's a great one with amazing guitar solos. Thanks for all the great reactions!
Originally a southern blues band...changed their style for the MTV Era...check out Brown Sugar ...Just got back from my Baby's...Squank from their first album
This was 1983 after they had been together for over a decade. They had perfect timing with the MTV phenomenon and this was a series of videos they did for the Eliminator album (Legs, Sharp Dressed Man and this one). You should check out their earlier work without videos, Just Got Paid, Tush, Waiting For The Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago. Heard On The X, Arrested For Driving While Blind, I’m Bad, I’m Nationwide, Cheap Sunglasses, Pearl Necklace. All before this album. Enjoy, it’s quite a Texas rabbit hole for y’all.
They had good hits in the 70s too. My favorite album of theirs is "Tres Hombres" from 1973. The original recordings were punchy. They remastered them with added reverb & they sound thin now.
Another great 3 man band that rocks hard... Hope you guys play Just Got Paid sometime, it's an older song from their 2nd album, they didn't have the long beards .....lol, but what a rockin' song. Peace & Love to all the RSR family...your friendly neighbor to the north 🙏❤🇨🇦
This is from the same album as Sharp Dressed Man so the videos came out around the same time. It kind of a shame that your exposure to bands is from RU-vid and not buying an album, reading the liner notes and going song to song. Bad Girl, Legs and Got Me Under Pressure are others from that album you should do. TV Dinners is worth a listen as well.
They were a boogie band from Texas. That's where they developed that distinct sound with the distinct bass riffs. All the videos from their Eliminator album have that ZZ Top Car theme.
ZZ Top were a bar blues band in the 70s. Then they went to a Depeche Mode concert and loved the synths and more eletronic sound. The result was the Eliminator album, these videos, and their 80s surge to superstardom-- and also a *huge* divide in their fanbase between those who prefer the 70s blues and the 80s synth-y blues/rock. (Me? I like 'em both.)
Best ZZ Top trivia ever..... The iconic beards ZZ Top are known for was an accident. After one of their albums they took a break and didn't see each other for over a year, when they met back up to record again, both guitarists had just happened to grow chest length beards during the break. They kept them afterwards for the unique look. The great irony? Their drummer, who didn't have beard.... is named Jim Beard.
This is the first ZZ Top video I remember being on MTV back in the day. And the lovely, Jeana Tomasino (Playboy Playmate), in the video was my favorite part!
Funny thing about ZZ Top also is the drummers name: Frank Beard, when he's the only member without one. Also Mark Knopfler based his guitar sound on "Money for Nothing" on ZZ Top, because they were all over MTV in the early 80's and that song was based on the comments he heard store employees make about the TV';s in the store wich were tuned to MTV.
Nobody plays guitar like Billy Gibbons. Hendrix rated him very highly. I love the simple but effective note bending and squeals that he puts on his solos. Absolutely great band who weren’t frightened to use synthesisers on their music, bringing it bang up-to-date at that time. RIP Dusty Hill.
Love ZZ Top, Legs, Sharp Dressed Man, Gimme All Your Lovin, these 3 music videos were everywhere back in the 80s. Never really thought of it until now I realize its a music video and not based in reality but if it was, how the heck would you get all three of those ladies in a 2 seat car on arrival and then Mr. Man AND all three ladies inside on departure without using the rumble seat (Yes rumble seat, its a thing, look it up)
