A look at Andrey Zvyagintsev's film Loveless (2017).
Resentment, separation, neglect, blame... Russia and Ukraine.
Apologies for any wrong pronunciation.

Fantastic video essay, a great film that is sadly not discussed enough

I was looking forward to seeing the kid who plays the son as a Russian superhero in a Hollywood movie but now that won't be possible because of the conflict

Now this film and review are more spot on than before it was released… Zviagintsev and Rodniqinsky saw the disease, but we/the Russian people still have to find a cure.

Is it only me that finds it weird that the camera focuses and zooms in on the ''underground'' hole in the tree where he got the tape from, at the beggining of the film. Maybe he went down that underground hole in the tree and just stayed there till he died or something? Because it feels like the films tried to tell us something. Maybe the tree is supposed to be symbol of kind aswell.

The mother has the most unpleasant female face in the cinema world. Well chosen for the role.

But what does it have to do with Russia/Ukraine conflict?

i mean the movie is pretty clear when it comes to the underlying political themes, especially by the end (the propaganda coverage on tv, zhenya running on the treadmill in a "russia" tracksuit, essentially running in the same place). so to answer your question, just watch the video again. it all makes sense, come to think of it.

@@markshulman3150 no it doesn't, if anything - this video is part of russian propaganda. A man that created this video doesn't know anything about Ukraine's culture and history. Kyiv is much older city than Moscow (Kyiv - "parent" and , Moscow - lost "child"). More over, Ukrainian people hate all russian, as a people that lived here, near them, communicating with them for centuries, we always knew that they were just one step behind nazi Germany in terms of their philosophy, only they weren't punished for that somehow.

@@markshulman3150 it's been overstated. the conflict is just one element in the mix, it's not as big a theme of the film (by the director's own words) as people are making it out to be.

@@markshulman3150 Leviathan was quite a politically nuanced movie, so it all makes sense
