Me being the third commenter and somewhere around the 2450 view speaks to how underated this video is. Even though I watched the film in the cinema almost five years ago this video helped me understand what the square was actually about.

Östlund is by far one of the most interesting filmmakers today (and that goes back by two decades). His brilliance is best to be picked up in tiny portions as the sequences got chewed up in such an amazing detailed manner here that I'm grateful that I found this review/analysis/chopping of the scenery. I re-watched the film as a warm-up for his next greater-than-life cinematic experience Triangle of Sadness.

Nice analysis. A cool thing that shows how subtle this film is when displaying ideas is that Justice is played in the car and the co-worker says: "The paradox is that they're called Justice. And what are we out to get?" Christian replies: "That"s not a paradox." But later on we learn that it actually hás turned out to be a paradox. Because they are eventually bringing injustice to the little boy and his family. And often people who think they are serving a good cause in the name of justice, actually fuck up a lot of shit.

So much to say about this essay and the film; it’s a supremely underrated film, especially as a Cannes winner but also Claes Bang shows such an extreme awareness of the material it’s amazing. As awful as that Dracula series was, this dude is proving himself to be such an intelligent actor. He completely embodies the material (and in the case of Dracula, presumably read it as pure camp). I’m very excited to see how he does in The Northman. As for the essay, it’s excellent. There’s a million great commentary/essay channels, but it’s a pretty rare occurrence for creators to find properly dense material and dissect and build on it in a way that is both informative and expansive. I’m not gonna…blow anyone’s mind by saying it’s not the most inventive editing, but the actual commentary is incredibly skilled. You elevate the underlying film (which deserves elevation) without insulting the viewer. It’s a perfect way for fans to reassess the material without making anyone feel dumb, but while also forcing them to re-examine the film. Just really beautiful writing their dude.

This movie and this video makes me feel dumb. I didn't have even a faint inkling what those strange scenes were about. Dumb as a rock with eyes painted on them to make it look as if it was watching a movie.

i think the gorilla act was mostly focused on freedom of speech and act as a great satire on art and the world. as long as the art or artist entertains you you laugh and enjoy yourself but when it begins to bother you very much, you just wanna kill the art and the artist. but surprisingly when i was watching the movie it thought the art gallery / gorilla artist represented government or the people with power whatever you do to express yourself , move or try to run they will hunt you. so people attacking the gorilla felt expressive and optimistic which is also kind of feel of the scene , well we wanted the gorilla to be stopped/

Well, if you want to see a governmental metaphor in it I'd rather say it's about dictatorship. And an expression how easily even an intelligent crowd of people can be overpowered with the use of fear, force and ideology ("it's in the name of art, so we all should agree behind the idea and the ritual of this performance and comply") by a dominant individual. The dictator threatens random people in the crowd for everyone to see its power, chases away some other males and when its power is established gets physically abusive. Only after the abuse crosses a lot of barriers, the crowd finally dares to revolt and starts physically abuse the dictator in return. What also says something about the aggressive nature a crowd can have, especially when the feeling of justice is a motivator. Justice. Quite the paradox.
