People should keep in mind, it's not like this is an "official" cover he released as a single. He was just playing it at a show for fun and as a tribute to Buckley. Who's one of Mayer's favorites. Relax people.
And how brave he even was to attempt No one on earth can really do this song any justice Jeff was just totally in a league of his own , for literally the rest of forever
So, I love John Mayer and Jeff Buckley, and I had no idea that John liked Jeff and had no idea that he did a cover of Jeff. I saw this and my heart wanted to come out my chest. This is a combination of my two favorite artists. I miss Jeff almost everyday (although I never met him, of course) and JM always make me feel better about it. So this is just magical, this made my night, day, week, month, and entire life
i just found out about this cover and i feel exactly the same, jeff had one of my favorite voices, and john is my favorite guitar player, so this is really magical to me
Note that he says in the end that he told himself that he would never cover a Jeff Buckley song, as well as saying "It's really easy - you don't push an old lady on the street, you don't cover Jeff Buckley"
It is amazing to see how even great singers fail to match the range and reach the high notes Jeff has reached with seamingly zero effort. He was one of the best recorded singers in history, without a doubt.
I am honestly sick of the fact that in every single video of this guy there is a debate on whether he is good or not. It's pretty simple: if you like his music, it's fine, and if you don't, it's ok too. And stop comparing him to other artists! In this case he's just playing one of Jeff's best songs, which probably means that he's into his music and he just wants to honor him. In my opinion Mayer is a great musician, and probably one of the best guitar players in activity.
Juan Pedro Pfleger The biggest issue is his persona. John Mayer is arguably the most talented guitar player/songwriter on the face of the earth, but most people just won't look past his douchey attitude.
@@Koubiak john mayer is the most talented songwriter on the face of the earth? someone needs to put down the bong; I'm sure after five years you no longer believe this
Jeff Buckley is (was) one of a kind, you can't compare him to anyone in anyway, he has at least a 4 octaves vocal range (listen to him singing "Dido's lament" and "dream brother" live in australia 1996, you'll see) and talking about him playing guitar, Jimmy Page himself can't stop talking how gifted and clever he was (Grace being his favorite album). Jeff also has been a huge inspiration for musicians like Thom Yorke, Matthew Bellamy, Brandon Boyd...not to forget how smart & passionate he was
Had Jeff lived, they would have made a project together. Most definitely. Jeff was just that dude. Much props to John for attempting this and making it his tribute to a most fantastic lyricist and amazing artist that was and will always be, Mr. Jeff Buckley. Rest in Paradise young sir.
wow version of Beloved Jeff Buckley. He channeled his face at 4:19. btw: I love the guy screaming cuz he's FEELING it & anyone that loves Jeff is the BEST.
i’m crying so hard rn. the love i have for both of these artists it’s just an indescribable amount of emotion. they’ve completely changed my life and im eternally grateful for the world they’ve introduced me to
John Mayer doesn't have the high notes of Jeff Buckley but his vocal range is still very big and he is an excellent singer. I think people underestimate his singing ability because he is such a good guitarist
John did a great job on this. He's got a great voice and I like that he didn't mimic the vocals like everyone else seems to do when they cover it. His falsetto sounded great, he didn't need the 3 1/2 ish octave vocal range jeff had.
This is amazing, honestly it’s sad looking at people trying to knock johns cover by just needlessly comparing it to Jeff, yes we all know you can’t beat the original, but John’s paying tribute, keeping it simple stop trying to criticise and just enjoy
Omg! I love john, but I love Jeff the most, he´s my favourite singer, his voice is just so unique...great job John, I admire you're brave enough to sing a song of such an incredible artist like Jeff...
I appreciate John covering this song. Jeff Buckley rules and more people should be aware of his amazing music. If you have ever watched Jeff Buckley perform, you would know how hard it is to cover his songs.
no one can ever top the original Jeff Buckley version! NO ONE! not even John Mayer! haha! But it's good to know that current artists still celebrate Jeff's music. :)
john mayer is this generation's jeff buckley (though i personally have preference to jeff). both phenomenal musicians, guitarists, singers, and songwriters. the whole package. great to see a cover bring the two together, as it so often is.
Pretty damn good for a cover. Some spots were rough, but I mean it's a hard song. Some spots were amazing. All in all, props. More spreading of Buckley's music, more better.
I don't see why people have a problem with this cover, it's a decent cover, obviously not as good as the original, when someone covers a song, they NEVER have the intention of beating the original, they are just showing there respect for the artist, I'm a HUGE Smiths fan and I LOVE Jeff Buckleys cover of I Know It's Over, not as good as the original but still brilliant, clearly he wasn't trying to beat Morrisey but was showing his love for The Smiths :)
oh yeah.. let's quote John Mayer "I told myself that I will never cover a Jeff Buckley song, but I guess I just did (...) it's really easy, you don't push old ladies down the street, you DON'T COVER JEFF BUCKLEY"
Im a big fan of john, but honestly even more of a buckley fan. John may not be able to sing quite like jeff (all those crazy flying buckley's!), but he really is a great guitar player. John is influenced by jeff. I think it's great that hes got the stuff to play one of jeff's songs live like this. All my respect to both of them.
I love John, he's one of my favourites, along with Jeff Buckley, but people are right: This song is uncoverable. It's just not the same, but it was nice to hear nonetheless.
@ItsCall911 uh... footage is rare, especially now that he's passed. I would think that the word of all the great guitarists raving about his playing would be enough though; watch some of his doc's.
It's funny how things change. All these musicians we look up to were just like us when thy were young. When they grow up they realize how immature they're being and respect all music like they should and stop comparing everything like It actually matters which it DOESN'T.
they are completely different guitar players. jeffs playing was magnificent, and had a very jazzy edge to it, his solos were very chordal and aeolian based. john is a predominantly blues guitarist, except for the occasional jazzy song (e.g. neon) but even so, his solos are one note after the other, a very typical blues feel. they are both very talented in their own right, although i feel mayer will never be able to write music like jeff, no one will.
@ItsCall911 I agree with most of your comment, your right about what you say, if it wasnt for just one point: Don't say that John's is more adequate than Jeff on the guitar. They shouldn't be compared this way, but since you did so at least don't say wrong things: Jeff was an outstanding guitar player, one of the best. :)
Of course Buckley felt it more than Mayer did; he was the one who wrote the lyrics (as far as I know) :) I think that this is an admirable try though, and over all : a really good performance.
Jesus, of course somebody's gotta defend the guy, it's MY video. You come on posting negative comments, calling me a Moron. I'm not trying to change your opinion about the guy, you're attitude is just wack. And you're just asking for an argument.
A valiant. He at least tries to respect the ideal that Jeff was trying to portray. Way better than that Mraz guy trying to cover this and way over singing it like it's some sort of gangsta song.
@ItsCall911 I agree with you on almost every point. I love the fact that artists respect or admire another enough to pay tribute and dropping comments about how he doesn't sound like Buckley is stupid. But you need to review history a bit before commenting on something like skills with a guitar. Guys like Jimmy Page absolutely marveled at the way Buckley could play, and he was frequently compared to guys like Hendrix. Watch some of Buckleys concert vids and you will see it.
i didn't say that... incubusbuckley did...jeff used diferent kinds of tuning, as does Mayer and many pro guitar players. In my opinion buckley is one of the biggest talents music has ever contemplated. A true artista, with soul, with feeling, with purpose without bounderies. John mayer is quite a performer, and a great musician as well. but my personal taste takes me closer to jeff...what a lost in music...
@TheJohnnydoughs He is quite a lot better than most guitarists out there now and then. I'm gonna say something that i know people will be against, but every decent guitarist should be well aware of this or else you are just denying for the sake of it, but Mayer knows tons of SRV songs (that's one thing alone) Hendrix, Clapton, Buckley, DMB, and so on and so forth, he plays pop, rock, i've heard him shred.. hear Covered in Rain, that's almost 10 years old, imagine his skills now... He is GOOD
@mattkimb1 there is nothing wrong with that. buckley wrote beautiful new songs for the world. everybody is like someone else. i dont think you can really ever do something musically that someone else has never tried. its just who gets famous first. but i get what your saying, and most of the time i feel the same way you do.
watch the documentary of jeff buckley. he was playing guitar since he was 14 and he could played guitar for many bands in the 80s no vocals until the 90s. Originally he was a guitarist first then a vocalist. He could shred to but it bored him and it wasn't the type of music he wanted to play.
@MrEstra5639 Agree! This is no different than any of us playing a Buckley song. We would do so simply because we love Jeff Buckley and his spectacular music. Its not as though we are claiming to be better or disrespecting him. John was simply playing a Buckley song, recognizing how spectacular Buckley was. He did a good job. There is no use in criticizing him. The man has certainly proven himself many times with his own music, why chew him out of a cover?
@Shishimu Every good guitarist has his own style, sure you can hear their influences but their own personality still shine through . You seem offended by my comment, but I wasn't talking to just you, i'm talking about all the fanboys that argue whether someone is "better" and whatnot. Oh, and you're telling me not to moderate the comments in my own video? That's silly.
