Build a dual trigger pad for your electronic drumset with basic materials on a low budget. This short tutorial video will be your guide.

The pad triggers quiet good. But compare to the other pads, we made in previous videos, this pad can not deliver the same results, which is mostly related to the DIY decoupler. If you want to build a low budget system out of wood, try to fit in the R-DRUMS decoupler.
Although this pad is still good enough for beginners and low budget projects, and it is easy to make.

I studied this video and used it as the bases for creating my own A to E project. However, the result was an under performing output, which caused me to search for reasons why and make kaizen (improvement) to the project. What I discovered was all Piezo are not the same. There are specifications relative to piezo which need to be adhered to in order to obtain a working result in A to E conversions. One needs to understand the Piezo specifications KHz, Ohms, exc. relative to the Piezo they are purchasing for such a project. Roland does not list its Piezo specifications, however others with successful aftermarket applications do, so pay close attention when purchasing piezo for your conversion. ....... These specs seem to work best with Roland modules: Resonant Frequency: 2.9 KHz Resonant Impedance: Maximum 300 Ohms Many of the aftermarket piezo sold as inexpensive replacements are in the 5 to 10 KHz range and 400 and higher, Ohms resistance, which is why they don't work well for A to E drum conversions. ........ Lastly, one revision I would recommend:... I replaced the adjustable L brackets on this assembly, with the deployment of a metal elevator bolt (like that found as the feet of washing machines). This revision allowed simple adjustment of the contact surface of the Head piezo foam to the drum head. I used a round dense, foam, about 25mm in height, as decoupler between the head of the elevator bolt and the washer that supports the head piezo. This system revision is much simpler to manage than stacking head decoupler foam and using L brackets located at either end of the e converter bar to acquire proper head contact. Further, it can be easily adjusted after installation if there are issues with head contact. ....... Thanks Very much V drum tips, for providing excellent video for the remainder of us to use as our guide for A to E conversion.

"I used a round dense, foam, about 25mm in height, as decoupler between the head of the elevator bolt and the washer that supports the head piezo" Would you mind explaining the purpose of a decoupler? I'm new to edrums and looking to DIY as well. I'm mostly trying to emulate the UFO brand ebridge trigger system. I have a foam cone, do you just put this on top of the piezo which is on top of the elevator bolt platform? Or does something else need to go in between the platform. Thanks for the tips!

@@mapex311 The de-coupler is meant to isolate the two piezos, so that it does not trigger(as much) the rim piezo when hitting the head and vise versa.

Would the wood be much less responsive than the metal in another trigger system. What I am asking is, would there be a big difference between wood and metal crossbar if all other components were the same (decoupler and trigger cone). Thanks.

I doubt I'll get a reply but it's worth a try. So I saw you used a foam cone for the middle piezo, but it's really expensive and I'd want to make my own. Do you think a cylinder would work aswell? or would I need to make a cone. Don't worry about it if you don't know, I can experiment a bit when I start this project.
@tjhessmon4327
@tjhessmon4327 Год назад
I have used both with equal success. The foam cone used by Roland was designed to reduce hot spots and still provide full contact with the Piezo head. other geometric shapes will work however you may experience an increase in hot spot location at the center of the head. Very precise percussionists will find the hot spots annoying others who strike their drums hard, will probably never notice the hot spot. The other option is to use multiple piezo as side mount, which eliminates most hot spotting.

Hi, i tried to mod a 12" Black Hawk Gretsch snare, i got the rim piezo mounted on the shell instead of the central bracket, and it work pretty fine, but i can't get the stick sound out of the rim, i only get the rimshot. Do i have to set a different sound into my module/vst or there's something i did wrong? Or it's how it's intended to work, a rimshot or either a cross stick? Manually setting the rim to play a sidestick work, but i see many others getting it working out of the box. I double checked all the wirings.
@Derek12-06
@Derek12-06 Год назад
Is it necessary for the piezo for rim and head to be different in size?
@tjhessmon4327
@tjhessmon4327 Год назад
No, many people imitate Roland setups by using a 27mm Piezo for the head and a 35mm for the rim, however that is not a requirement. Its more important to acquire Piezo which have the proper specifications for your A to E conversion than be concerned with piezo size. The resonant frequency of your piezo needs to be 2.9 KHz and the resistance no more than 300 ohms. Most of the inexpensive aftermarket piezo sold as drum piezo are in the 5 to 10 KHz range and exceed the minimum of 300 ohms resistance, which causes frustration in A to E conversion projects, as its rare the specifications of the necessary piezo are provided. The other option is to purchase Roland piezo from original sources such as Drum Tec.

Hi VT. I'm new to e-drums and I'm wondering if it's possible to insulate a larger, full sized snare (as well as the toms) with pillows or acoustic panels to reduce our levels of "noise pollution". Also, I've been limited to just a multi-pad (Alesis PercPad) and it's electronics are starting to malfunction (It's auto toggling it's options menu, midi, assign, sensitivity, etc but it's not affecting midi output or sounds). I opened it and the piezos are still in great condition, It's had little use over the years. Is it possible to reconnect the four piezos to four 1/4" jacks and connect them to a module ("ddrum DDTi Trigger Interface" or a "Megadrum")? I'd really appreciate a response from experts such as yourselves. Thanks for the tips VT. You've got yourselves a new subscriber. :)
@n1ghtmvre546
@n1ghtmvre546 5 лет назад
IoOrganism well on my limited knowledge of midi and a little common sense I would go and get a few of the piezoes and and a few throw away cables and see if you can connect one or two to midi and if that works then great as I wouldn’t just alter a piece of equipment that can be costly because you would have to link it into midi as midi are notes so It would likely need to be connected to an audio interface that has a midi in and out because if you just connected them to the piezoes it would just have a sound out put and no sample input, just my bit of knowledge to doing that
@IoOrganism
@IoOrganism 5 лет назад
@@n1ghtmvre546 Hey, Thanks for the reply. I don't have spare cables so I'd need to buy them. I was thinking of using "J11 Input/Output Mono Jacks" like these, instead of cables. I don't know if guitar and e-drum mono output jacks are the same. www.amazon.com/dp/B01HYBC6P4 The four PercPad piezos (they're still attached to the PercPad) connect to the main board via, if I recall correctly, a "4-Pin Relimate Connector" (it's a small white 4-pin connector that's around 1cm x 0.5cm). Ideally, if possible, I'd like to connect that 4-pin connector to four 1/4" jacks. Pintech makes "Single Zone Triggers and Jacks" for toms, that have a 1/4" jack that connects to a piezo via a 2-Pin Relimate Connector but it seems that soldering is my only solution here. www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/TomTrigger--pintech-single-zone-trigger-and-jack Though it would be a loss, The internal sounds aren't very important to me. I was only using the 5-pin midi out for triggering sounds in my DAW, Like a midi controller. I've just found this "E-Drum Cowbell DIY" Vdrum Tips video that seems to use the same idea that I have in mind. My only worry is that guitar and e-drums use different output jacks and I'll get the wrong ones. It may even be possible to rewire the PercPad's left, right, headphones and kick drum's 1/4" jacks to keep this all in the same case. I'd be connecting it to a drum module via 1/4" jacks, Like e-toms, so I probably wouldn't need to attach the piezos to a midi converter like in this video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-X9EG-E6SDCk.html
