For type 2 diabetics like me, keto has been a godsend. Before keto, I was on up to 120 units of Lantus insulin a day, I was seriously overweight, and my kidney function was declining, putting me on a path to be on dialysis in 18 months. After going on keto, I lost weight so that 3 years later, I'm down 65 lbs, back to a weight I hadn't seen since my 20s (I'm 75). My blood sugar also fell and I started coming off insulin. Now I haven't been on insulin for 2 years and my last a1c was 5.6. My kidney numbers also improved, and I'm no longer in danger of going on dialysis. For me, carbs are like nicotine from smoking - they're extremely addictive, but deadly. I had to quit "cold turkey" and commit to not being tempted to eat them any more. Fortunately, my wife is an excellent cook, and makes delicious keto meals every day, so it isn't difficult to stay on this diet. She specializes in international cuisine, making Italian, Mexican, Indian, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Thai, and Middle Eastern dishes, among others, so a keto diet doesn't have to be boring at all.
@@bk6010 The thing about keto is that it won't work if you only go half way, either by cheating or because you don't know what foods have carbs. If you try it, make sure you know the carb count of every food you eat. Best of luck!
@@nickjohnson811 You will have to stay keto though. As not ingesting carbs only covers the cause of diabetes type 2. The fat inside the muscle cells that cause insulin resistance itself (intramyocellular lipids) that interfere with opening the glucose transporter. If you do not ingest sugar, then insulin resistance won't matter. However, that is the actual cause. You are only treating symptoms right now.
@@BenediktLohmann Carbohydrates are not required to sustain human life. There are zero essential carbs. Cutting out carbs doesn't cover anything it eliminates an unnecessary toxin. Carbs/ sugars are converted into triglycerides and stored in fat cells. Insulin is a fat storage hormone.
I have struggled with my weight since I've hit puberty. Tried everything. Became vegetarian. Vegan. Nope. Nothing worked. I exercised 3 hours a day. Ran marathons. Now, I'm not massively obese, but chunky. Went on medicine to control my appetite. Didn't eat any junk food. Started a ketogenic diet of high fat, no carbs, moderate protein. 3 weeks into it: Constant lethargy-gone Inability to focus-gone Acne-clearing up (fucking 40 with acne) Energy-restored Inability to sleep at night-gone Inability to wake up in the morning-gone, get up without alarm and exercise Suicidal depression-gone Inability to break my weightless plataue for 6 months, broken Hunger-ok, I still get hungry but not like I use to. LOL. I will never go back to carb eating again. No pasta taste as good as I feel. I'm not saying this is the cure for everybody, I'm saying this worked for me.
@C K I have been on a carb restricted diet for 18 months now and and it is not what the naysayers say it is. It can be if you do it wrong, but the biggest restriction in my diet is processed carbs. Stop eating processed foods and your carb intake will drop dramatically. So no flour products, and wheat and oatmeal no sugar and that includes soft drinks and juice, smoothies, cut out white rice and wash/rinse rice well before cooking, cut out ALL vegetable oils and margarine (olive oil is not a vegetable oil, it comes from a fruit whilst vegetable oils are actually seed oils and your body does not like them. If can't cut them all out long term at least restrict them dramatically. My consumption of fat and protein has only increased marginally and this is because I don't eat as much as I used to, but I eat when I am hungry, Processed Carbs (sugars) are .addictive and the more you eat the more you want. My weight has dropped and it was all fat and some water retention that is gone and the IBS I had a bit of is gone along with a reduction in skin irritation. You can loose weight faster by cutting back on the higher carb veg and replacing them with more and more green leafy veg. Reduce the high carb and high sugar fruits and eat more berries. Once you are at your target weight you can eat more carbs, just not the processed ones. The key to any diet is to get a good range of needed fats, mineral vitamins from real food. Vegan, vego or omnivore it doesn't matter as much as getting the whole range. It is harder as a Veg to get the saturated fats you need, but not impossible.
What do you think about keto adabtation.I've been on the keto diet for 3 months and still low nergy. How long does it take to adapt to Keto? Please help me.
Yes this works! I lost 120lbs in 8 months on low carb 20 grams or less a day no sugar with intermittent fasting. I'm off all my meds and feel amazing!!
To lose weight most people do not need to be on 20 grams or less a day. Many will get great responses from less than 100 grams per day. The real key to the weight loss is not the total daily amount but how much you are eating every meal. So if most people can stay below 10% carbohydrates per meal they will get spectacular results.

I’ve been living keto for 2 years. In the first 10 months I lost 85 pounds and reversed pre-diabetes along with scores of very positive changes, too many to list. I consume lest than 40 grams of carbs per day and I weight train 3-4 days per week. I’m 54 and have gained back 12 pounds of muscle mass so anyone who says you can’t physically exert yourself on LCHF diet is full of crap. The great thing is that it becomes effortless and you are only drawn to eating healthy natural foods.
3 years ago I was 320 lbs. Went Keto and Intermittent fasting. I prefer to workout while 14 to 18 hours into my fast. I was on 5 medications today I don't even take an aspirin at 195 lbs with 12% fat. When building muscle I prefer to do 16/8 intermittent fasting with the odd OMAD. My body prefers 20/4 or 22/2. Dr. Berg, Dr. Berry, Dr. Fung & Thomas Delauer videos saved my life. Sugar is the enemy not good fats, such as saturated, mono and polyunsaturated. Healthy keto with a large salad rocks with my carbohydrates in my last meal. Intermittent fasting makes life so easy, your gut health heals with good fermented vegetables like sauerkraut. Break your fast with easy protein like bone broths with coconut oil. Good luck, the 1st month is tough especially stabilizing your electrolytes and minerals so read up on it, salt isn't bad for you. After 4 to 6 weeks the hunger abates and it's like being reborn! Good luck.

Did you find you could stick with it long-term Carole? I found that really difficult and couldn't keep it up, making one meal for myself and something else for the family, no low carb options on daytrips, not wanting to offend hosts by rejecting their cooking, few options in restaurants, feeling sick of salad and fish or salad and steak or just plain salad... Long-term I struggled with it but it definitely did work in terms of rapid weight loss and improved energy levels, fewer hunger pangs. After a year of strict ketosis I’ve reverted back to baking sourdough bread and eating three or four slices a week. I think you’ll find that most people that eat keto for a long period are able to eat various carbs at various times but still mainly keep very low carb for good. And that’s the whole point get healthy and stay healthy. I never have the desire to snack and on the holidays I may indulge in some sweets. I was prediabetic I am not anymore. Had high blood pressure ( 150/90 ) not anymore ( 110/65 ). Lost 35 pounds and 5 inches off my waist. I had acid reflux for decades not anymore. Went from 6.1 H1C to 5.2. I’m 68 and I am not on any medications and don’t plan to be. Another added benefit, short term memory loss that started in my 50s has now reversed. Because I’ve been doing this so long my body has become fat adapted, which means it understands that fat and carbs can both be used as fuel. So if I eat a sandwich one day and go out of ketosis I can go right back in by the next day or two By limiting my carbs and increasing my fat. So if anyone thinks I reverted back to the way I was eating before you are most definitely wrong. I will eat this way the rest of my life And have my cake and keto too.
I agree, had a similar journey. Started out with strict keto, then gradually went up slightly in carbohydrates (with veggies, not garbage.) Weight dropped in the beginning, then a plateau for 2 years. So easy to manage. No more acid reflux, no more inflammation, better sleep, better energy level throughout the day. Occasionally eat a bit of hummus or beans, but don't cheat big because I don't feel the need to. Suits me fine and going to LC/HF with 5x wk exercise made me feel great. Don't plan to change it. I think about the impact of my making poor "small" choices and how those can add up, little by little, over a year. It boils down to making new habits, which honestly took me a long time to change. (Good read: Atomic Habits.) Over time, the new habits took over, and once the grip of tasty carbs and sugar left my body, it got easier. Very powerful people promote plant-based diets, and most food emporium menus' are filled or even based in high carb or Standard American Diet. I think this is the main reason why we still resistance to this approach: MONEY.
They use a cheat code with grains. Fortification with folate, B12, etc. A grain-emphasized diet was guaranteed to lead to malnourishment in the past, such as folic acid deficiency leading to babies with neural tube defect. It is still is, those stuck with white rice might lack vitamin A. So they tried to GMO a cheat code and make golden rice. Celluose-based is the real healthy part of kingdom Plantae but it's also less tasty and more expensive than cheap cereal.
@Jane lane Not to mention the sugar industry. Hospital meals are just like u saw here. If u get avegie serving at all, it's just a garnish...you'd have to order 8-12 servingsto get 1/2 a plate of vegies.
Jane lane that’s a myth, don’t believe the propaganda. They’re all lies to get rid of actual natural human nutrition. And it’s sponsored by big pharma and the grain industry and the one world government drones. It’s all tied together.

You idiot don’t say that cereal is the only carb. What about oatmeal, berries, or sweet potatoes? They are way more nutritious and filling than fats. Fats are the least filling macro.
I’ve been on Keto and intermittent fasting with a 6 hour window for about 2 weeks now and I’ve already lost almost 7kg which is absolutely incredible and I recommend it to anyone. I also feel so much more energetic and less hungry (I also do vigorous cardio for 30 mins in the morning and lift weights in the afternoon)
It absolutely works. I've lost 55lbs and kept it off for 3 years now. you just can't treat it like a diet and stop doing it, or you'll get the same results - you gain the weight back. its a lifestype change
They told us to eat carbs because farmers/grain producers needed to earn a living - until the population became diabetic and started costing too much. It's all a money matter, never health and well-being matter.
Because if you look around, you will notice the current advice does not work. Eat less move more, high carb, low salt and plenty of seed oils is why obesity and diabetes are epidemic.
@@johansen8700 Marketing for carbs is everywhere. TV, magazines and even how grocery stores are set up puts processed carbs in clear view of shoppers. Ever here the slogan "breakfast is the most important meal of the day"? It was coined by cereal manufacturers to increase sales.
Started keto in 2018 and have since lost 103lbs and shaved 59 points off cholesterol. It's definitely not for everyone but it has worked for me. I am genetically predisposed to diabetes. I'd previously tried Pritikin and DASH and was also vegan for many years. I struggled immensely with hunger and my hair fell out in clumps. I also have very low blood pressure naturally and on DASH it was furthered reduced which led to fainting episodes. Turns out my body just really wants vegetables and fats.

I am about 1,87m (6’2”) and was weighing something close to 120kg (270lbs) I started to do intermittent fasting and keto. I didn’t do it gradually, I simply cut all carbs out of my system right away and I had the worst first week of my life with my body craving all types of sugar and foods. After that week it didn’t take long for my body to adapt to fatty foods like eggs and avocado and eat once a day around 1200-1500… I shed 60lbs in less than 6 months and I don’t look or feel fat anymore. Now I slowly am putting some carbs into my diet, lots of vegetables and I’m exercising quite a bit. At 35 years of age, I’ve never felt this young!
I'll never see a dietitian again! In the 80s they wanted me to eat 8 pieces of bread a day! 4 fruits, 5 veggies one meat and 0ne milk! I was already on a low carb diet and had lost and I told them no way.and I quit the program.
Registered dietician told me to eat low fat foods and drink diet soda containing aspartame when I was pregnant in 1986. Baby brains need quality fats in mom's diet and aspartame is a dangerous neurotoxin. So much for my faith in consensus "nutritional science."
The field of dietetics has completely changed, so have the guidelines. I am a new-grad dietitian and that food recommendation seems crazy to me. A lot of dietitians now don't try and put a lot of focus on having x amount of servings of x food group every day. There are things that can be worrying to us such as high levels of salt and alcohol but in general, we now like to promote a variety of foods that works for the individual.
Fact - I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism about 4 years ago, after a blood test. At the time, my weight had gone up to 92kgs (over 200lbs) I tried different eating methods, without success, until someone introduced me to Keto late last year. From Nov to April 2020 I cut out as much Hi carb foods as much as possible, rice, lollies, noddles, root veges, high sugar soft drinks, and by April my weight had dropped down to below 85kgs, while still eating as much protein as possible, any meat mainly chicken and pork was still consumed. I have now stabilised at about 85kgs and still enjoy eating meat and non root veges, but have re-introduced myself to carbs within moderation. I didn't have to increase my exercise work rate, and I hate sugar, its poison.
If you aren't careful about the protein intake (ie. meats), it will trigger gluconeogenesis in your liver which will turn the excess protein into sugar. To keep in the state of ketosis 80% of the energy (ie. calories) must come from fats and 15% from protein.

I used to weigh in excess of 91kg and I am barely 5ft tall. In six months of going low-carb with intermittent fasting I shed over 20kg and I've never felt better. I had [and still have] a massive sugar issue and it is my belief that the western society we live in has an obsession with carb and sugar loading all foods, and it's simply to keep you eating and keep the fast food, healthcare and pharmaceutical industry pockets lined with the money of people that have been lied to their whole lives.
@@moonknightish What most people fail to understand about weight loss is that carbohydrates are - generally - almost instantly broken down into monosaccharides. When you consume proteins and fats, your body has to engage in processes that turn these macronutrients into energy, whereas carbs [sugar] don't require the body to do much work in order to turn it into energy; it's just available to use almost immediately. The difference between using proteins and fats as energy, and carbs is that when your body gets an influx of sugar, it turns to insulin production, which - by its very function - shuts off your body's ability to use fats as energy. So this simple cycle of continuously gorging yourself on carbs only serves to stop your body using its excess fat stores as energy, instead using the immediately available sugar and keeping people hungry, and in turn, keeping them buying sugary foods so companies keep making profits off of our poor health and misery.
It works for me, I hv tried myself, low carb-high protein diet, and taking less than 1,000 calories per day. In just 2,5 months, it lowers my BMI, from 25 (over weight) to 22,5 (normal). Still doing the diet, to reach BMI 21.
I've been on low carb high fat for 11 years. My hormones and blood work always surprises doctors when I tell them what I ear. People often say I look 30, when I'm 43 years old. Life's good when butter is plenty!

I always laughed when doctors told me I'm going to have a heart attack on low carb because of all the eggs and meat. But it's sugar that caused high cholesterol not fat or protein. You don't eat a drumstick and it goes straight to your heart. That's a myth. It's the sugar that turns to fat that goes to your heart! And it's plaque that makes it worse and some say bacterias.

Me too, we used the lard for cooking. We had bacon, fatty meats, a lot of eggs and a lot of eatable vegetation(herbs). I was always skinny and worked a lot
Refined carb/High sugar diets tend to make people fat. It also seems mixing a lot of fat/protein with sugar also makes you fat. The only good carbs are carbs found in high-fiber vegetables. So, through research and the process of elimination, a high-fat, low-carb, moderate-protein diet seems to be about right for health.
It's a sugar/carb/misinformation crisis in America since the 1977 government- endorsed food pyramid recommending 6 carbo loaded meals a day. Cut carbs to keep your "fat storage hormone" (Insulin) low. Another easy technique is to skip breakfast. (Intermittent fasting). I'm in my 50s and lost 65 pounds in 6 months and came off all my medications (for high blood pressure, cholesterol, gout) using those easy techniques. It does require some discipline but results come quickly. In the end, it's not really the public's fault. We have been lied to since the 1950s about nutrition. Look up Dr. Ancel Keys flawed data. Or watch "Big, fat, surprise" which explains it much better. You will be shocked and angry at what the government and Big Pharma have in store for you...cancer and diabetes.

if you eat once a day be sure you are getting the calories of a full day (over 1500 to 2000 calories), that is about three full meals at once. Otherwise don't do it. If you eat a normal meal once a day you will be severely caloric deficient and your body will react by lowering your metabolic rate, and that's not what you want if you are looking for permanent weight loss. Caloric deficit is common mistake that people make when they think about dieting to lose weight (eating less, being hungry) and that's also the primary reason they yo-yo in their weight loss (regaining the weight immediately after finishing the diet)
Of course it is hard to give up bread, pasta, and any high carbohydrate foods because for years, the public was told these were the foods to eat and to avoid all fatty foods. Now people are addicted to the high carb foods, so yeah, kind of hard to give them up now.

It’s also because carbs = sugar and sugar is addictive. I worked for a chiropractor who told me I was addicted to sugar. “But I don’t eat that many sweets!” I protested. I gave up pasta and bread and realised how right he actually was!

My daily walking regimen was not putting a scratch in my extra pounds. I started a low-carb diet in January this year (2019) and quickly lost 15 pounds (6.8 kg). It's not easy to be "low-carb" but it's worth trying hard to stay with it, especially since my triglycerides have come down to a normal level and my doctor told me out of the blue that I'm nowhere near becoming diabetic... not that I was in danger but he was so impressed with my numbers after just one month of the diet that he felt compelled to say something about it. 👍 😎
How big were your triglycerides and where you are now? I was in the 200 range before low carb but didn't test it recently. Sadly I am on carbs again due to holidays.
Profetu Rulz Last November my triglycerides were at 222.0mg/dL, which was about where I’d been for years. I started a low-carb diet (keto) in January 2019. It's not hard to stay keto if you show how bad carbs and what we usually eat are. I started keto for weight and fell back to carbs but when I understood the keto/paleo diet is what our body wants and what we are adapted to it has been incredibly easy.
I started to know about low carb after my dad got diabetes 1 year ago. He is in south China rural area where people ate a lot of white rice and some vegetables. Because meat is expensive, people don't eat that much, but only occasionally. My parents are the same. I think this is how my dad got diabetes, and many other people in the village. Started to do some research to help my dad and found out low card diet. Recommended this to my dad, and now he is controlling his diabetes much better and cutting some medicines. It's hard to convince him since many doctors still insist that you have to eat rice or some kind of carbs. I myself been in low carb for 4 months now, lost some weight easily, feel really good. Also convinced my boyfriend to quit sugar and join me with the low carb. I think we should share our experience and spread this message to more people. I wish I know this earlier , then I would suggest my dad to cut some rice and sugary cookies and he probably won't get diabetes/high blood pressure.
Complex carbs like steel cut oats and brown rice are okay. I lost 15 pounds this month through intermittent fasting and eating whole foods, plants, and grass fed beef/free range chicken. Cut out all processed foods, dairy, and sugar. All my numbers are good.
Steel Cut Oats and Brown Rice are not ok. Especially for a diabetic Type 2. It's going to spike their Glucose and insulin. This is about Insulin Resistant. A diabetic should not be eating oats or any rice. Period!
Yes, low carb diet works!! If you feel the need to eat carbs tell yourself:"I will eat it tomorrow" and drink some water. Eventually you will not feel the need to eat carbs from grains, bread, noodles, cookies etc.
