Low Flame On A Propane Barbecue-Easy Fix-Tutorial

In this video, I show you an easy fix for a low flame on a propane barbecue. If you have cleaned your grills and you still have a low flame on your barbecue, it is likely because of the propane regulator that you have activated. There is a special device within the regulator on your propane barbecue that, when activated, will limit the flame on the grill. I show you how to figure out if yours is activated, and then show you how to deactivate it so that you can get a hot barbecue grill again.

I can't thank you enough for this video. We're on day 5 with no power recovering from Hurricane Helena in SC. Our grill is literally the only way we have to cook meals right now. I was having the exact problem you described. I even got a new tank thinking the old one was faulty. After following your instructions, my grill worked perfectly. I have been turning the burners on before opening the tank. Now I know how to do it correctly. Once again, thank you from SC!

Just bought my grill a bit over a month ago. Used it a week ago for company and worked perfectly. Lit it the other night and had that tiny little flame. Took me an hour to cook a 15 minute dinner. I was ready to pull my hair out and slam my head through the garage wall. Just tried this trick now and worked like a charm on the first try. Thank you soooo much.

Almost 68 yrs old and I've never heard of this and have never had a problem with a grill, until today. I replaced the guts of my Char Broil gas grill and couldn't get a decent flame. I thought it was my tank, so I turned it in for a new one which was just as heavy. Got home, same problem. So I decided to come onto youtube and this was the first video I watched. BINGO!!!! I'm back in business!!! Thanks!!

Bought my BBQ grill in 2006, for my 2nd floor apartment and kept it on the front porch. Used it for 2 years and hated it because it was unbelievably inconvenient running up and down the steps to cook meals. It sat since then. Fast forward 17 years and I moved in to a new home. I fired up the grill with a fresh tank and used it since April without issue. Then during our 4th of July party, the grill was only heating to 300 degrees. Took forever to get it up to temp. Thought there was something wrong so I cleaned all the burners. That didn't help. Found your video and it worked (yes on my 17 year old like-new regulator)! I couldn't be happier thanks for sharing. In less than 7 minutes the grill was up to 425 degrees.

The OPD is in the tank valve, not the regulator. If the tank has a triangular valve, it has an OPD. Otherwise it doesn't. The regulator is where the magic is happening. But other than that, a great article, and will definitely help many!!

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! I Will often shut the flame off from the tank, instead of the burner controls - that way i bleed the line and there's little-to-no propane in the feeder line. Well the last time i turned it off, i forgot to shut off the burners and when i went to start everything up again, the burner valves were open and im guessing thats what set off the regulator - cause, EXACTLY, i could not get it to heat past 300.... But i followed your instructions and i was flamin' and flippin' after that.

I JUST found THIS in my BBQ Owner's Manual: BBQ 101: Guide to your Regulators Flow Limiting Device What is the Flow Limiting Device? The flow limiting device is a safety feature built into the Propane regulator that detects a change in pressure, limiting the amount of propane that is delivered to a BBQ’s valve assembly, causing unstable performance. What causes activation of the Regulator’s Flow Limiting Device? Improper lighting procedure Opening propane tank too quickly A leak in the system A positive connection has not been made between the propane tank and the valve assembly/ When should the Regulator Flow Limiting Device be reset? Burner will not light with igniter or match Burner does not get hot enough Low or incomplete burner flame pattern When a leak test is performed and no leak is found When a positive connection has not been made between the Propane tank and manifold assembly. How do you reset the Regulator Flow Limiting Device? Open the BBQ Lid Turn ALL main control knobs to the “OFF”/CLOSED position Turn the Propane tank valve to the “OFF”/CLOSED position Disconnect the Regulator hose from the Propane tank Turn ALL main control knobs to the “ON”/OPEN position Let stand for 1-2 minutes, allowing all excess gas in valves and manifold to dissipate Turn ALL control knob back to the “OFF”/CLOSED position Reconnect the regulator hose to the Propane tank- hand tighten only. Check all hose connections to ensure that a positive seal has been made Slowly turn “ON”/OPEN the propane gas supply Wait approximately 5 seconds for the regulator pressure to stabilize Turn “ON”/OPEN the selected burner control knob to “HI” Press the Multi Spark ignition button or match light selected burner. Safety Devices in Regulator Flow Limiting Device: The Flow Limiting Device alerts us to a change in gas pressure due to a leak, improper lighting procedure, system blockages, negative connections between manifold and gas source, and opening gas source too quickly. Thermal Sensor: The Thermal Sensor is built into the interior of the regulator hose. It will automatically shut off the flow of gas if the hose reaches temperatures between 115-150 degrees C (240-300 degrees F). If this temperature is reached the hose and regulator will, melt away from the tank to avoid serious damage. If this temperature is reached the hose and regulator will, melt away from the tank to avoid serious damage.

The OPD (overfill/overpressure protection device) is incorporated into the valve on top of the tank, not in the regulator. The excess flow is generally located in the device attached to the cylinder at the cylinder. Never fill a propane tank more than 80% of it's rated weight in weather over 80ºF. Cold weather (let's say below freezing) likes tanks that are more full because there is less pressure in the tank due to the temperature.

I would LOVE to see a fact sheet on how many people who are not mechanically inclined have called someone into their homes to check the BBQ and have been charged a "cleaning fee" because they were told that " wasps have plugged the gas orfice" ...I bet there is more than 2 accounts of innocent, probably older people being duped by this newer technology. I'm 63 and I did not know. One thing about the internet and RU-vid in general. IF you can type out the problem you are having properly and precisely, you WILL find an answer to it on the internet. That is exactly why I'm here. Just remember, don't be like my ex-wife and type out a paragraph and expect an answer. " Low heat output from propane BBQ" is all you need ... "I tried to use my BBQ and sometimes it will cook hamburgers just right, but when I try to cook a thick steak, it seems to take longer than it should, what seems to be the problem" ...you will end up on a webpage that shows you how to sear a steak. . . hehe.
@StephanieM67

This was soooooo helpful.... I had a feeling something was wrong with the flow of propane, but haven't been able to identify what that problem was exactly (my issue is that I am not seeing any active flame coming from the venturi pipes [if that is the right term] but definitely getrinf plenty of heat when turning on the BBQ? The pipes are clean, and all holes clear of any old food debris? Anyways ... I am hopeful you you have solved it for me! And ...if nothing else, I am now aware of the proper steps in turning on my BBQ safely and effectively without triggering that safety feature! Thank you sooooo much...this was a fantastic video!! 😊
