Bro, I love when extremely talented photographers take there craft beyond photography and get into cinematography. Because they understand composition, lighting and their scenes way better than someone new just getting into cinematography. I love hearing your perspective of things. I’ve been a filmmaker for over 7 years and your work is absolutely inspiring. Do more content like this. Gear doesn’t matter is a fact.

I am a Graphic Artist and I started about 6 month ago until I bought a new camera the a5000 by Sony. I am not even a Photographer but I am great taking photos on my phone. But Its nice. But nit Cinematic style look. I have not yet tried color grading. But, one thing I know about Being a DJ. Understanding your gear and limitations is important. My videos are mostly unlisted on the channel. But I created playlist for you to explore the Years before. Helps with visual cleaning on my channel. Like Spring cleaning for your home. the Seasons change and I'm about finding people who communicate, help people and willing to make time to make things happen. I just subbed today. Seen his channel yesterday on no money budget film. but like he said. He built himself up. just like myself with my DJ Gear and pro audio. But one thing I have learned. the old saying. Better to bump your ISO and get extra grain than to blur the shot because the shutter was too slow to freeze the action, or the aperture was too wide for adequate depth of field. You CAN reduce noise in post. You can't fix a blurry shot.

Thank you for embracing the grain and shadows! So many people on RU-vid preach perfect exposure/no noise. Not all noise is bad. If I set up a shot and it’s only drawback is it’s a little noisy, I’m taking the shot. Better than giving up and feeling defeated over the shot. I would love if you shared more perspective on your technique. Great vid man.

I really appreciate these kinds of videos much more than what you aptly described as “clinical” I hope this style of video gets the views and likes and responses that makes it worth it for you to make more. I think this speaks more to the development of personal style which can carry people a lot further than we tend to give credit to. Obviously knowing how to work the gear you have is important but what you do with that gear and how intentional you are about it is what really gives it an edge. Great video as always ❤

I'd love to bump the ISO, but I have a real problem with the Blackmagic Pocket 4K, which seems to have crazy noise in anything other than 400. I tried 3200 but it's very distracting and gives a muddy image. Usually, I have to add lights and stick to 400. Anyone have any ideas?
@URBONED

My go to, I have taken from Ridley Scott's early films, which I love, Alien and Blade Runner. Pretty much everything is backlit, and very heavy on shadows. If I'm in a situation with only one light source, I find using it as a backlight, even if it means the subject is completely in silhouette, is often a more appealing image than trying to front light them and have no detail in the background. You can compare Alien and Blade Runner to David Lynch's Dune from the same period, which I admittedly enjoy, but everything is front lit which makes all of the incredible sets look like sets instead of real locations like Ridley Scott's films. You can see it in all of your shots in this video, every frame has the majority of light behind the subject versus in front of and it looks goood.

When I care about the image noise, I usually only care about the color noise. I try not to alter any greyish noise because they really reminds me of film grains. When the noise reduction kicks in to those greyish grain-like noise, it becomes blurry, unsharp and loses the film grain-like look. But I always try to eliminate color noise as much as I can. They don't give any pleasing effects to my eyes.
@Ben-rz9cf

I would also recommend grabbing a lil pocket RGB light. When you're up against huge light sources, esp. the sun, they're weak as hell, enough to almost be useless. But in low light is when they shine. Doesn't have to be a full on light wand. Grab yourself an Aputure MC and stick it on anything, or a boling P1, use it as a kicker or a fill with your diagetic lighting, even a key light if the light is low enough. If it fits in your pocket, no excuse not to bring it along.
@fusseldieb
@fusseldieb Год назад
I think that should be a tool in every photographer/videographers pocket. But again, a bright cellphone can also be used. IPS displays and especially AMOLED displays are extremely vibrant and bright, which can get you out of some situations if you crank them up to 100%.
@vuhlandes
@vuhlandes Год назад
I agree. But all of these tips were things we can do for free. Considering everyone isn’t in a place where they can buy a light even if it’s cheap and sometimes it’s good practice to just get out and do it with some stuff you already have. I will make another video talking about lighting

Any tips for dealing with banding in your blacks on lower quality cameras? I shoot on a T7i and while I've always loved to create photos in low light situations, transferring that aesthetic to video on a camera that has such a low dynamic range seems to make things significantly harder.
@URBONED
@URBONED Год назад
May or may not work, but try adding film grain over the image. Adding that texture over banding means each pixel has detail to play with and can sometimes hide those crunchy black levels. Also look at your curves, sometimes banding is worse on the red spectrum vs green and blue or vice versa, and you can try and reduce it by adjusting curves for a single colour.

Thanks for taking the time to produce this video. Lighting is the most important part of a video or photo, the gear is second. You're right, there is always some light and a little grain never hurt anybody. It's better to increase the ISO than not have an image at all. Sometimes the grain adds more character to an image than keeping it sharp and clinical. You do really nice work. Keep going!
