Low Water Carnage! Fall Bass Fishing From the Bank: VFJ34

Serious low water isn’t necessarily bad news for us predators, bass and anglers alike. The bass can be easy to find, and with all those fish -both prey and predators- crowded in together, the fishing can be darned exciting.

Hey, Ben. Great to hear. All bass waters share a LOT. The one group that seem to wonder whether my stuff is relevant are big water fishers. Same stuff is going on behavior wise, but the real estate involved is more daunting. Paul

My home lake is 500 acres and the information I glean from your pond videos translates very well to my lake. I can’t tell you how many Bass I have caught from applying your insights. I have out fished my partner and for that matter, every person I have met at the lake by a long shot because I apply what I learned from your videos. Especially when it comes to locating areas where the fish are in “ circumstances and conditions “.

Hi, RVf. Thanks. Good to hear. And thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I guess I should talk tackle a bit more in my VFJ's. I'm not terribly tackle focused, there being so much of that out there already. But I do make specific tackle decisions for each outing, so I should include that. Want to do it quickly though, unless there's something critical, bc my vids are already pretty long. I'll think about how to do that. Paul

So glad you are still at it, been here literally since the beginning. I have to deal with the water drop changes on almost an hourly basis fishing being in the south on the TVA controlled reservoirs. It definitely does change up things, but they do provide release schedules online or through the app so you can actually try to utilize the best times of day. That said, go fishing when you can....because it's good for ya, regardless if your catching...it wouldn't be called fishing if every single time out was insane with strikes.

Hi, BN. Yes, those reservoirs will make you appreciate, and keep track of, current for sure. Yeah, fishing is more fluid than many people might assume. Certainly keeps us on our toes. And yes, go fishing whenever you can get away; Staying on our toes is healthy. Paul

What an awesome day of fishing you had, well deserved I'm sure. That's weird how bass tend calm down once they are laying on top of weeds. That's amazing how they survived those conditions 3 yrs ago.

Hi, Bruce. Yeah, that was just one stop during a bank fishing outing. It was too easy to pass up. Most of my time was spent with a more difficult scenario. Yes, bass tangled in weeds just stop trying to escape, as if they are hiding. And they may be, since they'll dive into cover for safety. I was surprised too. Mustn't have been too harsh a winter that year, although our CO plains winter's are generally mellow compared to the NE where I originally hail from. Paul
@jamescaspersamanthalintner4767
@jamescaspersamanthalintner4767 3 года назад
yep it's the exact same thing they do when they drop a lake for winter they pull that bait off the shoreline and make it easier for the predators to feed throughout the winter mother nature also does this as you have pointed out vividly here

@@thenatureoffishing7591 I'm actually fishing a reservoir it's a natural one naturally fed. They actually raised the top end of the lake by 6ft up and down. The lake is managed for largemouth bass trophy Bass. No private boats allowed in the lake. You can rent a rowboat from sunrise to about 2 in the afternoon in the summertime. But that's a short supplied is only about 15 boats. And you can only fish to shore from the east side of the lake the lake is 3 miles long. I've caught more Largemouth this year in the 4 and 1/2 + range than ever before. Right now it's getting chilly in New England very few people fishing it. The water temperature as of yesterday was still 56°. I know I'm going to pull something out of there probably in the 12 or 13 pound range easily sooner or later.
@thenatureoffishing7591
@thenatureoffishing7591 3 года назад
The coldwater period is the best time of the year to catch BIG bass. 56 is prime as they are still chasing. It's below 50 when things slow down. But, they are still catchable all the way to ice-up. And hey, you'll likely have it all to yourself. :) Paul

Hi Paul. Your last comment about lures doing something special made me rethink why some plastics are so effective. But I'm not sure if bass seeing certain colors on the lures matters. Does it? And how do you know what colors work the best. Thanks for the great video!
@thenatureoffishing7591
@thenatureoffishing7591 3 года назад
It's tough to make heads or tails out of the effect of colors. A lot of experienced anglers end up saying that color is last on the list of priorities. By "special", from a fish's side, means prey that is vulnerable to attack, and that has more to do with obscuring the fakeness of a lure and triggers applied to it by the angler.
@brettben2337
@brettben2337 3 года назад
@@thenatureoffishing7591 It is tough when it comes to color. I'm not a heavy tackle person either but every little bit helps.
@thenatureoffishing7591
@thenatureoffishing7591 3 года назад
@@brettben2337 I have my color preferences too. And I can cite some science too. But, in the end I really can’t tease out the role color actually plays. And there are too many instances where anglers have fooled themselves into thinking color played a significant role when it turns out it didn’t. That said, it’s often a color that gets me to say “oooooo!” while at a tackle shop. :))

Great video! Why do their teeth turn red in cold water? I always wondered
@thenatureoffishing7591
@thenatureoffishing7591 3 года назад
Hi, Kevin. Thanks. Be sure to share with friends. So, "red teeth", or turgid (blood-engorged) tooth pads, are a phenomenon I started noticing years ago, esp in winter caught bass. Although I, and friends who watch for such things, have seen "red teeth" at some level all year round, it's most common in winter by far, and is most intense in the coldest periods in winter, a brilliant scarlet red, like highly oxygenated arterial blood. In really cold water, it also shows up just under the skin along the belly, lower fins, and throat area. I have found no research so much as mentioning it. The common angler explanation -and that has reached mythic proportions- is that it’s from eating crayfish. It’s not, although the two may coincide. The most likely explanation I've heard so far came from an aquaculturist, who claimed it was a stress response to very cold water. But I’ve not found anything in the science literature to back this up. I’ve recently discussed this with a bass researcher whose done considerable work in bass physiology, including winter physiology. He’s in S Canada and has been ice-fishing lately -the perfect scenario, or so I would have thought. But he got back to me finding NO red teeth! I was, still am, very surprised. Possibly, a guess, is that far northern bass may be better adapted to such cold and are not stressed by it? Mystery remains. Thanks for asking. Wish I could tell you more, and what such an observation might be "good for". One things I'm pretty confident about, it ain't from eating crayfish. Cheers, Paul

Hi, Luke. I don't share exact locations, not bc they are special, in fact they are very average, even below average (like the one in this vid), waters. I don't share bc I don't want local anglers I share these waters with to be concerned that I'm advertising "their" spots. Again, these are very average public waters and there are a LOT of waters just like them all over. Part of my tack here on TNF is to purposely fish, and shoot UW video in, public waters, the kind of waters most of us fish. The waters closest to you are going to be just as good, or better. All the best, Paul
