So happy to find this. I lived in the DC area in the early '80's and had a cassette tape of this recorded off the radio, which I must have listened to 500 times. I read recently that it was George's favorite radio appearence. Cerphe was the WHFS DJ and did an amazing job with these legends in the studio. Lowell and Linda sound incrediable together.
Actually that station chose those call letters before they adopted the progressive radio format and the Cordell Avenue studio hand'not changed much at all The calls stood for Washington's High Fidelity Station! They prided themselves on sound quality. They did not use audio compression. Sounded great on a home stereo, but on a cheap portable radio or most car radios of the era you were forever having to fiddle with the volume
WHFS was from the Triangle Towers on Cordell Ave Bethesda, it was Washington's music scene until 1984 when the music died.. Tune in WRNR Annapolis or WTMD Towson for what's left today.
this is dope from public radio near ish (compared to new mexico where i live) and also before i was born or right around...1974...anyways, its so good that i love this clip making me nostalgia even though its supposedly far from me... and yet i enjoy it and find it inspiring and will shamelessly say as a community radio DJ man now im proud to say i have a live musician coming on mon aug 20 to my little radio show on 96.9 FM KMRD LP Madrid New Mexico... anyways great clip....glad this one has more of their talk.... thanks for the share!
Concerning the date: At the beginning of the recording they mention the upcoming release "at the end of this month" of Zappa's Apostrophe, which was released in March 1974, so there you have it. I think they must have replayed a recording of this session at least once late at night because some of it really rings a bell.
