Been watching Star Trek since the first days of TNG and let me tell you this was one of the best episodes of Trek I've ever seen. I have not been entertained on that level by an episode from anything really. 11/10 Perfection. We watched it twice already and will watch again tonight.
I was in my late twenties when Clone Wars came out. It proves you can have VERY serious arcs, but also humor, in the same series. I didn't grow up on Star Wars, but quality is quality. Lower Decks is one style. Prodigy is another. You can simply do more in non-realistic animation than you can live action or CGI. TAS did things TOS could never do, on a low budget. It's not about graphics. It's about story.
I would say it is about graphics, but good graphics doesn't mean number of polygons and photorealism, good graphics means mainly good stylisation for me. It's valid even for games, some very old games can still look good because that graphics is strongly stylised, while old "photorealistic" attempts look ridiculous now.
HISTORIC EPISODE. When I say genius writing, I want to be sure its not taken as a cliche - the writing is GENIUS and the directing is not far behind that. SNW has always been great at proper tone, and this blending is done so damn perfectly. I laughed all the way through the episode for all different kinds of reasons. In fact....I'm gonna watch it again. Now. "Riker!"
Oof. The writing is probably the only thing that is not very good on SNW. The actors are constantly making up for it though. (Case in point: 'Riker!' was an improv line by Quaid.)
One of my favorite part about this episode was with the Orion’s where the captain was shocked by Tendi’s alias but also just how happy he looked when he learned they were acknowledged as scientists in the future
As soonm as it ended I was like "OK, what excuse can they use in-universe to make this happen again?" I need to see more of this. Bring along Tendi and Rutherford next time too!👍
The Riker joke of Boimler hopping on the saddle had me struggling to breath, genuinely the best episode of the season and honestly one of the best crossovers
@@PorkinsTheWhite Jack Quaid's Boimler should be re-assigned to the Enterprise-G, if that show ever gets launch (He'd be a Lt or Lt. Cmdr at that point). Star Trek hasn't had a good comic relief character in a long time in live action. The ad-lib and overall characterization was on point.
Did you notice Mariner remarking to Boimler that people in the past talked slow and low as opposed to fast and loud? This was an extremely important episode in regards to Spock's evolution to the emotionally frigid Spock that we know. If anyone has been worried about that, this episode proves that's something SNW is working toward. There is no Trek that adheres to canon more tightly than Lower Decks. You think you know canon? You don't know canon like Lower Decks knows canon. Where the Lower Decks characters point to what we we know as canon proves the writers of SNW have not forgotten canon.
Yes. In my mind, what we see in SNW is not the actual canon timeline that goes ENT, TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, LD * (it's a cartoon, and a comedic one at that), Prodigy, Picard Season 3. Discovery, SNW and Picard Seasons 1 and 2 are in a parallel universe. This is why they don't visually line up with the original timeline I reference above. SNW is in my opinion free to do what they want with the characters. They can have Christine Chapel and Spock get together. They can have Kirk be serving on a Farragut that is not a Constitution Class. The ships and tech can look different from the established canon that was respected by 5 other complete shows, one (now coming up on two, wherever they decide to show Season 2 of Prodigy) season of another, one season of Picard and mostly all of Lower Decks. The costumes can look different... it's all good. I think that this episode was meant to be a parody of Star Trek as a whole. I don't think it will actually take place in the in show canon of either show. (But when I think about it, Lower Decks might make the episode part of the in show canon for it) They probably won't/reference it again on SNW for the sake of the seriousness of the show in general. But Lower Decks as a cartoon will probably be free to. There's enough room in the Star Trek banner for all kinds of Trek. I'm seeing that they are being very good about clarifying things without actually clarifying things. Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow actually shows that the Strange New Worlds timeline is an alternate one. We saw that the Eugenics Wars didn't happen the way they did in the original Star Trek timeline. Khan's life was not the same. Therefore nearly everything that follows is different... to a degree. This is not to say that the original timeline doesn't exist... and we can still get more content from it.
It was a nice meta joke to see them acknowledge the fan's complaints about how Spock has been written through the eyes of Boims and Beckett (who are essentially surrogates for fanboys and fangirls a like in this episode😁 ). This might have also just have been a "preemptive retcon" (if you will) to connect the two and cement them both in the "prime" timeline without having to actually show the full journey on screen before SNW ends.
@@maskddingo1779 Aye, but I feel bad that Spock will probably have to purge his humanity soon. This is sort of hinting that Spock is going to have to make a sacrifice soon. Nurse Chapel is still on the Enterprise in TOS, but we never saw Spock and her interact.
This was the BEST episode of SNW. I loved how the writer came up with the story and who the characters from two different series formats were merged. My favorite moment, the lat scene with the SNW crew being animated and the reason they feel animated is the drink Mariner taught Ortegas to make. Was this also history in the making were a animated series and live-action in the same franchise to have a crossover. I'd be exactly like Boimler if I was to meet Pike, Spock and crew in person and be aboard the Enterprise. Boimler is a Star Trek fanboy and many fans can really identify him, which is why Lower Decks is so beloved. Lastly, I love how this episode gave a shout out to Star Trek Enterprise and knowing that Pike is a fanboy of Archer and the NX-01.
Even though not a franchise it was done for The Incredible Mr Limpet w/Don Knots in ‘64. But as far as a genre show, Supernatural did it with Scooby Doo. And the ultimate combo as seen in Roger Rabbit.
I have to say, the joke in this show that I found both the sneakiest and the funniest was that, after all the angst over Uhura trying to translate the inscription on the time portal, the reveal -- that all it said was "This is a time portal" -- was worthy of Douglas Adams in its sideways humor. This was definitely my favorite episode in all of the new Trek.
Was originally only a Lower Decks fan at a glance but the character development has been excellent, and with this crossover I am now looking forward to the new season. As for Strange New Worlds, they're having a lot of fun this season. Considering the more serious tone of events to come, I welcome this change of pace. This is a great series.
I am grateful for Strange New Worlds. Never thought I would experience the joys I felt watching TNG and DS9 again. SNW is actually up there with the favorites now.
Absolutely FANTASTIC! Loved every part, even cried a littl :') This episode is one of the best Star Trek's yet! "have not even got up to the musical episode, which from the clips WILL BLOW MY MIND. 🖖
I loved every moment of this episode. Lower decks for all its silliness has a HUGE heart full of love for Trek and it was in every scene. So many blink and you miss it references -"Riker" or the new take on temporal interference "If you don't look it doesn't count". And then there was the tear up points , Pike being told there are so many people around him right now who would appreciate more time with him or #1's progression from fear of her future, to not wanting to know(Pin up girl???) to glassy eyed revelation that she is literally the face of Star Fleet. /Bravo!
My favorite Star Trek joke was in "Lower Decks" ....."What the hell are you doing?! You said "Send them a message". That means phasers! I meant to send them a message to invite them to dinner!"
i loved this episode also loved the call out for the nx 01 enterprise and speeking of the archer enterprise teases in picard and this episode make me hope they are making something for the ship to return
The thing with Spock and Chappell, she now believes she has no influence on him in any way or that their relationship has no meaning to him in the future. But we all know the way he really felt about her in TOS and she was very important to him and he never wanted to hurt her or leave her waiting for him forever so he let her go.
Lower Decks has been my favorite of the streaming era Trek shows, because it hits all the right notes while not taking itself too seriously and injecting humor into a beloved franchise. This crossover had me beyond excited, but worried about the execution. I have to say, I was over the moon and overjoyed with the finished product. The story made sense, the way they made the transition from LD to SNW and back was flawless. The ending with the SNW cast in animated form was a great touch that allowed that crew to "let their hair down" for a moment. Jack and Tawny played their animated counterparts to perfection (right down to the purple hair). Having Tendi and Rutherford in the opening was a stroke of brilliance. There are SO many good things to say about this episode, and I can't give it a single strike for anything.
@@time391 See, I knew I was leaving something out, and when watching the episode I even said to my wife "hey babe, Riker's directing" ... you can tell when it's an episode he's directing.
I have to say this episode got a lot of laughs out of me and found it very funky and funny kinda ever makes me wonder if they ever gonna do a Star Trek Star Wars crossover..
The scene where Boimler & Pike are discussing Pike's birthday celebration hit me right in the feels! Even though Pike knows his future, it takes Boimler reminding him that once he's gone, there will be many people who'd also give anything for just another moment with him 😢 Pike was talking about how he felt that way about his dad after his passing, only to reflect & realize Boimler has a point. Loved this crossover, and I'm shocked it was so well done!
I actually started watching Strange New Worlds because I heard about the announcement last year at Comic Con about this Lower Decks Crossover event was happening. Before that I was not watching Strange New World’s. I caught up with season 1 of Strange New Worlds just before season 2 started airing.
Considering that the season 2 finale is on the 10th of August and and that it is the 50th anniversary of the Animated Series, it makes sense to release it early keep up with the release dates. After all, the musical episode is August 3rd.
Thing about the animation is it's the best way for classic Trek characters to return. TOS (those still living), TNG, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise could all easily come back without having to explain the aging or spend on de-aging.
I agree. It worked for the original animated series produced by Filmation back in the early 70's, and kept the Trek franchise alive between the end of TOS, and the first movie, Star Trek: The Motion Picture.
I feel as though Spock was fck’n with Boimler with the smile when Spock walked in the lounge area 😂😂 That smile was just a little mischievous and evil looking for some reason imo 😂😂
@boombasett6038 - Nope. If that's the case, then there are some discrepancies with Star Trek the Animated series and current Trek, and some online Trek stories with said current series. Unless it's referred to by the writers, I don't consider it canon. And I said UNOFFICIALLY canon, meaning previously it was something of a wink and a nod to current Trek, but not acknowledged. This episode to me does now... 😏
Actually, this makes SNW canon. No Trek series...not even TOS...adheres to canon as tightly as Lower Decks adheres to canon. Nobody knows canon as well as Lower Decks knows canon. Lower Decks stretches every fan's knowledge of canon to their limits.
I have been watching Star Trek since 1980s. I appreciate the evolving nature of the franchise, and how it honors the past. Star Trek Discovery mostly sucked though.
🙂 I, have been a Star Trek fan since I was little, back when the re-run of the original series was still on TV. (Before the remastered, CGI enhanced version of TOS was around)
Star Trek was a cartoon in the 70’s. Just in between TOS and TNG. This not new for some of us. Mixing it up with live action is, but the original cartoon was great in its day.
Fantastic crossover episode! I love both shows, and the writers brought the BEST of both together for a delightful episode which I'm sure will eventually become a classic!
The only thing I was a little disappointed with the episode is I kinda wanted to see Ransom and Number One live just to see Jerry and Rebecca on screen together in live action. That said I absolutely loved the episode because lets face it we would all be Boimler if that happened to us.
1st tht episode was so beautiful i loved it and this episode got me to binge lower deck s12&3 for 3 days 2nd what i took away from tht episode was tht orion hurricane really messes u up and tht everyone on the lower deck animation drinks it which is why they all see themselves animated prove me wrong 😂😂😂😂
This is the best of all the star trek series and films I ever watched. 12/10. Boimler was on point. However, Mariner is a force of nature, I feel her personality was toned down a bit.
Pike was ready to blow that Orion up, and then didn't... shouldn't that alter the timeline? And having to relocate that colony? But Tandi's great grandmother did survive in the original timeline also....
Pike never blew it up to begin with. Time travel theory. The timeline is the timeline. And all this timey-whiny stuff is already baked into that equation. He did not blow it up. And the Orions "discovered" the portal. All remains as it should.
Plus, even if there’s an “original” timeline before Boimlers travels, the Enterprise would likely have been gone before they arrived; they only stayed to figure out how to send Boimler back. Plus, with no federation ships in the area, the Orion’s would likely have studied it without beaming it up.
Isn't it funny, that a comedy animated series ist the best star trek we had in decades? Being more respectful to anything we had seen before in other shows. As i heard, this crossover episode will also be the best of SNW episodes so far.
Mariner not knowing what a Pin-Up was, was great btw its up there with some the silliness from Voyage Home... and for people that dont get it still, Una though Boimler had Sexy playboy type poster of her....
Was surprised and deeply worried at first but once you embrace the idea of it, I found it quite amusing and at least okay. What pains me is that they spent an entire episode of a short 10 episode season, as a special this would have been good or if a season still was 20+ episodes but given there ll just be 10, I m fairly disappointed that this one made it in...after the last one that I personally found to be rather mediocre by SNW standards. But hey, that s still positive coz the 2 seasons so far have been very good to great overall.
is that an XL Dauntless in the back shelf? it looks bigger than the regular one. what i don't get about the episode is that they discover a time portal but the orions chose not to use it? i'm assuming it's just there and no one used it since they discovered it
Fun episode. Just one question: wouldn‘t it have made more sense if the portal had not just displaced Boimler in time but also made him travel through dimensions? Would‘ve explained the comic vs real-life thing (also with regards to differing attitudes).
It made more sense for it to be time travel in the real world. It makes lower decks canon. The audience already knows it's a cartoon. They get what's going on. We don't need to be hand held in this.
I've been enjoying SNW tremendously, and this episode was no exception. Jess Bush is breathtakingly beautiful, and Spock's creepy grin will keep me awake at night. But the two crossover characters were so immature and tiresome that if this was intended to generate interest in the animated series, then I'm afraid it backfired.
Loved this episode but then I love Lower Decks. But I couldn't help but wonder what ST:SNW fans who've never watched it because "its a cartoon" must have thought. I would have been like "what the actual f**k?!"
I don't get why some people (mainly guys) see shows like SNW as quote "Serious Trek" and shows like SLD as "Funny Trek", acting like mixing the two is wrong, or threatens how they see the show and themselves as fans. Like Mariner told Uhura, generally, you got to mix it up sometimes. All work and no play makes Trek a dull series.
