Well, it wasn’t a gravy train really. People started rehabing their homes during the pandemic which kept their employees working and the doors open in spite of building prices going up. They weren’t getting free money from the govt as far as I know. I don’t think there’s any need to resent them. People were at home full time and they wanted to change their living spaces. Properties were improved.
They had to stay open-if you have emergency home repairs you need to be able to buy them. Burst water pipes, or water heaters, fridges breaking, plumbing are essential.

I quit going to Lowes when the company started to have employees just standing around and doing nothing while expecting me to scan my own items and bag them.
Last time I went they sent me back and forth for about 30 minutes before someone finally decided to be nice and do their job. All I needed was them to cut wood to a certain length which is locked by a key.
Stopped shopping at Lowes when I briefly got in a bind on my Lowes credit card and they raised my interest rate to just over 30%. Then they would lower my credit line and fine me for being over my NEW limit. I PAID THEM OFF. I NEVER DEFAULTED. I PROMISED MYSELF, NEVER AGAIN. NEVER.
You can blame Synchrony for that one that's who issues Lowe's credit cards they're notorious for lowering credit limits and closing people's credit cards
That happened to me with a Macys card, but the interest rate was 33%. I just paid it off, closed the account. It was a real headache. Then they sent me a bill for 2$. I paid that too lol

Of course, sales are down for Lowes & Home Depot. During covid we were all told to stay home. People saw this as an opportunity to get projects done. They had record profits then. People are back to work and yes money is tight. Profits are going to go up and down. The sky is not falling.

It comes down to trying to extend the principle of property taxes to intangible property. It makes sense for a feudal lord or a government to tax you in proportion to how much land you hold because they take on the liability of needing to defend you from theft and invasion, which costs them in proportion to how much land you have and how attractive it is as a target. That's why in the long arc of history you have found taxes both on wealth and income. Unrealized capital gains is a clunky attempt at imposing a property/wealth tax on equities and other securities holdings, which is where most of the non-real-estate property is held.

I hate the whine but as a contractor, I’ve noticed prices since the pandemic have skyrocket at Lowe’s and Home Depot when I can go to the local hardware store in Arkansas and get lumber cheaper than either of those or I can get sprinkler parts cheaper than either of those somethings wrong they’ve been gouging us. Your local hardware store probably doesn't pay a franchise fee and likely has a small real estate footprint leaving it with a smaller property tax bill. This allows them to price competitively. Which is why you, and everyone else, should shop at the local hardware (or any other) store rather than a box store.
Also, I have 3 lowes cards, spent $50k so far this year at just lowes (another $25k @ Home Depot YTD) & never once did either place ever ask about my house or mortgage rate

This type of circular definition is typical of attorneys hiding the real intention of the statute, which I believe means "residential rental property". Rental property would imply a business, and a business would imply a taxpayer, and taxpayers have to file tax returns. Regular Joe Smoe on the street isn't filing a tax return on his house. Do you catch my drift?
I was Home Depot today in NY and snowblowers were already 1/2 price. It’s not even winter yet. Grills I saw for $600, now $399. Price gauging is coming back to haunt them now.

Property tax should be less than .5% not 2% going up every year. The salaries of the county treasurers office w sheriff voted on their increase of salary that almost doubled. It should be we the people voting not 5 officials voting on their own salary increase. Shameful, unsustainable,inevitable crash!
I was a carpenter and contractor who worker on and built houses inn Silicon valley starting in 1969 It is the huge property taxes that have destroyed the ability of people to buy houses... In 1974 I was making 12 an hour I bought a 3 acre lot for 7500 and built a 3000' sq ft house for 20 dollars a sq ft The property tax was 900 a year. I got the permit in 2 weeks Today I am pricing out a house near the other one It is not a mansion We applied for the permit 3 years ago and still dont have it. there are no envirnnomental issues . It will cost 600 a sq ft. and the property tax will be 40 000 a year It is gov and their BS by the way It is Santa Clara County Gov in CA is run by teachers and gov employees

In indiana, up until the last 3 years, you could almost always expect a homes listing price to be within 10 to 15 percent over the county's valuation for tax purposes. Now the listing prices are almost double the county valuation. A house down the street just listed for $280,000 and the county says its worth $148,000. We dont have the tax problems theyre having in texas yet, but the average pay around here is $20/ hour and with interest rates at 7 percent people cant afford $2000 house payments.
