Help: I know noting about fish finders. What I need: water temperature, depths, boat speed, and structure/ schools of pan fish. What do you recommend? I only fish lakes/ a river within 100 mile radius here in Kentucky. Mounting on a 2004 Yamaha PF175, and I only fish a few times a year. What would you buy? Any brand and any size?
@@MrTaylorcraft I would recommend HELIX 8 CHIRP MEGA SI+ GPS G4N. At $1300 you get all the features of 10", 12", or 15" unit. If that is too much you can get HELIX 7 CHIRP MEGA SI GPS G4 for $750. Note the first one can be networked, if you expand in the future. I would pair both of the these with a Lakemaster mapping card for the Southeast, which includes Kentucky. Let me know if you have more questions.
In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens ru-vid.comUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.
Just started looking for fish finders at the beginning of this year. New to the fish finder world and it can be very confusing. Awesome video very informative without all the confusing mumbo jumbo lingo they use in other videos. I was already leaning towards the helix 7 g4 (that's what brought me here) but I think you just sold me on it. Also I didn't have a clue about the pixel math so that was good research on your part!
Thank you. That is a great unit to start off with. I had the g3 DI version for a couple of years and loved it. Which verison are you getting? (DI or SI?)
Very well explained thank you, you have helped me to make my mind up, it the helix for me , take good care kind regards alan………….THE DAWN CHORUS PLOT 🌿
I am debating between these units at the moment…..I think I may go with the Helix based on the built in mapping. The Lowrance unit has inland lakes but I fish inshore coastal. It would require a map purchase. The Humminbird basemap that is standard has the Coastal US coverage. Other than that, from watching videos, I am of the opinion that the Helix is easier to set up and use.
I am looking at getting a hook reveal 5 downscan or a helix 5 di g2. What would You get? Isn't helix about 8 years old reveal 4 years old? Helix looks clearer down scan but the reveal feature is nice also.
Hello clearwater fishing. Questions on the lowrance hook reveal 9 please. 1. Internal memory? 2. Unit with world base map and no charts loaded. Will the internal gps allow u to track and make waypoints without land and water? I am currently not in the US and will be freestyle spearfishing Thanks for ur input.
If you are comparing apples with apples maybe you should include the Lowrance elite models to compare against the higher end Hummingbird models. Cheers
I have an old Humminbird 797 that was on my boat when I bought it. I transferred the waypoints to my new Lowrance Elite 9ti when I got it. Since I can’t network them, can I mark a waypoint on my (console) Lowrance and periodically transfer and update the Humminbird (on the bow) with those new waypoints? I guess this would be a poor man’s networking. Keep up the good work. I enjoyed your video.
The mega imaging/mega side imaging is so sick man. Detail to a T. It’s really hard to find a Helix G4N, they must be havin’ a hard time gettin’ them in the USA 🇺🇸.
@@clearwaterfishing well it’s actually the Helix 7 that’s hard to find. The 8 and 9 I was able to find. Unless it’ll say on back order when you try to buy it.
I like the Helix because you have more control over the image via the settings. Lowrance has a one knob control. To me, that’s the biggest different. I had a elite 9 TI and never felt like it was good as my bird was. My new boat has birds, and I love them. Whichever choice you make I hope it works awesome for you!
@@clearwaterfishing Yes, the 9" & bigger have 2 card slots. Right now I'm trying to figure out which Helix 7 to buy. I'm considering either the G4 with or without Mega. The non Mega unit has Chirp 800khz so I'm not sure if there a big enough difference to make it worth it. Especially when from what I have heard Mega is only good for about 25' and then you lose detail and are better off on another frequency. I hope to get a spot lock trolling motor some day and the prices on them are Ludacris. So the $200 difference could help with that.
@@MrWhiltetail I get really good detail on mega SI about 75 ft out and 50 ft on mega DI. I don't fish any deeper than 40 ft. The difference between mega and 800 khz is all detail. Will you find the same brush pile on both, yes. Will you be able to tell the difference between some of the limbs and a fish up close on 800 khz, maybe. Are you going to fish it anyway? (If you are hard headed like me the answer is yes. lol). Hope that helps.
Thanks for your review. Do you have to pick between mega si and mega di on humminbird? Can you have a unit that has both? If you can only pick one, which one would you prefer and why?
MY HOOK 9 WENT BAD AFTER 4 TIMES IN THE WATER LESS THAN 6 MONTHS OLD AND ITS STILL UNER WARRANTY AND THEY WANTED 200 BUCKS TO FIX IT. I WILL NEVER BUY 1 AGAIN
This was helpful. I’m looking at the hook2 7 with triple shot, the Hook reveal 7 triple shot with c map, the elite fs 7, and the helix 7 chirp si gps g4. I’d like your opinion on these and maybe you can help me understand whats the big differences between them all.
I like the helix because I have more control over the image. Whether it is more frequency ranges or just having both contrast and sensitivity settings. Don't get me wrong the others will work great, but I like the control to fine tune my image. I am still learning how to get it perfect though.
I think you forgot to mention that you can use navionics cards on a humminbird. Over here in europe every humminbird user does that because there a no lakemaster maps available for europe. Thats one reason why the popularity of garmin (wich owns navionics) has grown immensly over here. Humminbird better starts to focus on the world not only on the US market.
Looking to get a FF for my paddle kayak. Does that setup altar your opinion? Thinking I should wait for that upcoming Helix 7 that they have on the website as "coming soon" but that Hook Reveal does seem easy to use for a first FF. This video was perfect for me btw thanks!
I would get the helix 7 MDI. If you want live imaging someday you have to get the G4N. Otherwise get the G3. If you had a pedal kayak you could do some scanning with MSI.
@@clearwaterfishing interesting, what makes you say that side imaging is more suited for a pedal kayak than a paddle kayak? I would think being in shallow water would mean side imaging is important in either kayak but it sounds like that may not be the case?
@@chefmatt6299 For SI it is important to keep a straight line for good image quality. It’s why you don’t see MSI on trolling motors. In my experience paddles are tough to keep in a straight line.
Thanks for the great videos. Im hoping to add a helix 10 di+ g4n to network with my 12 mega chirp si g2n. Hoping to get a great deal around black friday. Might just get the 7 because the 10 and 7 g4n's have the same amount of pixels. So is the 10 screen any better?
The helix will be higher quality all around. If you are looking to expand someday a networking helix will allow that. If you want and inexpensive stand alone unit to help you find interesting areas, navigate, and find fish I would go triple shot. I think the helix is worth the upgrade.
@@clearwaterfishing Interesting take and I really am torn, I kayak fish, inland fresh water lakes, lots of weeds but at times you have to fish out in the open and the versatility of the Hook has me interested but I hear what you are saying..... I would only have room for one unit.
@@clearwaterfishing I ended up getting the Garmin ECHOMAP UHD 73sv Fish Finder/Chartplotter Combo, had everything I was looking for in one unit. good price on sale for less than 500. on a kayak I dont have a ton of room so this seems to have it all. the touch screen was a big plus. thanks if you have a review for it I will definatly check that out.

Let me guess... you bought a TI. You are comparing something that is twice the price, without mentioning price. How is the touchscreen in the rain? when splashed? With gloves on? How easy is it to use in rougher water - we don't all fish cosy, calm lakes.
