We have more and more students showing up to carbine courses with LPVOs mounted on their blasters. That's awesome, so long as it matches YOUR situation and YOUR mission at home; I want you to train with the equipment you plan to fight with. So, show up to our courses with YOUR setup, not just what you think we want you to bring for a course.
That said, many people miss what a LPVO is designed to do; it's designed to be ran on 1X all the time; then dial magnification as needed while the gunfight develops.
So, how do we practice this? How do we practice shooting on 1x, then dialing up magnification while we still keep shooting? Anyone can "twist the ring" but have you tried doing it as part of a timed drill? There are several different techniques, that all have pros & cons, and some are faster or slower for different people. I don't care which technique you use; I just want you to use the technique that works best for YOU with YOUR setup. Which technique is that?
That's where the LPVO Drill comes in. It's an easy drill, shot at 50 meters, and you need 3 targets of diminishing size. I use a specially made target from our Battle Rifle-1 Course, but you could use simple bullseyes or paper plates.
50 yards or meters (I don't care)
Time yourself with a protimer
Start with LPVO set on 1x (mandatory)
2rds Standing (large target)
2rds Kneeling (large target)
Dial up magnification while going Prone (try different techniques)
2rds Prone (medium target)
2rds Prone (small target)
Again, time yourself using different techniques manipulating the LPVO magnification ring and you'll find certain techniques work better for you and are faster.
Have fun with it.

Good drill for new LPVO shooters that won't eat up a ton of ammo. Nice Drill!

Good Drill! I’m an Old School Marine/LEO. Two of my boys, Marine Sergeant, 82nd Airborne Sergeant convinced me to transition to a Glock 17 MOS with a Trijicon RDS, and now a SigSauer Tango 6 FFP LVPO. A little bit of a learning curve, but I don't mind being coached by my kids.

This is a good test of a rifle too, since you have to be able to quickly engage close targets and then engage a scaled silhouette that approximates a 200 m target. I plan on doing this drill with all my rifles and optics set-ups to see which can do it best, starting with iron sights. I like that it’s at 50 meters because all my rifles are zeroed at 50 meters. I think I’ll try it at night too.

Good stuff. You just gave me an idea for something like a dot torture drill, where the numbers in the circle are the magnification you switch to. Shoot 1x, transition cover and the next dot is say, “6”, switch to 6x and shoot.

While it’s obviously a great drill and everyone should be capable with their LPVO on 1x I prefer the piggyback dot. Some like offset but I like piggyback mount. This helps with quick target acquisition and not having to look down a tube and also helps for those of us who run NV. A tall optic is your friend under nods lol

Defeats the point of a LVPO…. If you are gonna do that, you should run something like a 3-12x with a larger bell objective lens.

What are your thoughts on the speed benefit of using a throw lever to change magnification vs. the snag threat of the lever in real defensive situations?
@sunuvliberty_III
@sunuvliberty_III 6 месяцев назад
I make no claim to be on the level of these guys. With that said, I spend quite a bit of time with my rifle. I live in the mountains and carry pretty much daily (in all sorts of different clothing, sometimes with a pack, chest rig, etc.). My trijicon accupoint has a nub that’s probably about 1/4” long and I’ve never had an issue with it snagging. It’s enough to get a hold of, but not so much that it gets in the way.

Do you have it zeroed on 1 X then? If so at what distance? I have my zeroed at 36 yrds on the 8 X setting (Vortex LPVO).
@TacticalRifleman
@TacticalRifleman 6 месяцев назад
Zero on max magnification. On good modern scopes it should maintain a zero throughout the full magnification scale. We use a point blank zero of 200 meters. Depending on your bullet weight, velocity, and the height-over-bore of your optic; that might initially cross line of sight at 36, or 41, or maybe even 50 meters. Again, it depends on YOUR setup. What is important is where it crosses line of sight at distance. Thanks for watching, TR
