Many shooters don’t even realize that their grip on the gun isn’t as effective as it can be. A good grip controls the leverage of the gun on your hands and minimizes muzzle flip. It also enables good trigger finger placement and control. One of the overlooked aspects of a good grip is also retaining your weapon in a hands on engagement. A good grip has to give you all of those abilities.
We’re discussing guiding principles of a good grip here. Tweak it and make it comfortable for you. As long as you adhere to the principles you can achieve a good, comfortable grip. Just make sure that you grip high on the gun, create maximum friction between your hands and the frame of the gun and apply the correct amount of pressure in the right places.

Here’s my notes in case anyone wants a summary to help remember the concepts addressed in this video: - Purpose is to control recoil + muzzle flip and recover sight picture quickly - Grip high on the pistol to minimize the leverage the gun has over you - Maximize the friction of the gun (grip pressure and surface area) - Support hand placement (high with good alignment) and role (control the gun vs. control the trigger) - Thumbs aligned vs. thumb over thumb - Nut cracker (hinge, jaws, levers) - Stiffen the wrists - Instructor check grip effectiveness - Lateral impulse - Torque impulse

Near the end when they were checking retention ability, Rossen was able to successfully turn Imri's weapon mounted light on. Thus successfully draining his battery. That was awesome.

Gripping a pistol is something the best of us struggle with. Ex: Even though I am an IDPA shooter, I had to alter my grip for my .380 straight blowback because I had shot pretty much only Glocks and CZ-75s beforehand. I also am an instructor and we had a dude from the Army getting his PPO Officer certs in my class literally this week. He had issues gripping his Glock 48 because he wasn't use to holding a single stack, since he was used to the M9 more than anything else. Remember: no two pistols are 100% identical, which is why familiarizing yourself with the ergonomics/idiosyncrasies of a new gun is par for the course. This video is a good demonstration on how to do thst. Imri always has some of the most practical input on this channel and he is a good one to listen to.

Finally someone who uses the same grip I developed from revolver shooting and then transitioning to pistol. It is not low thumb, but I call it hook thumb since the support thumb is hooking or holding above the primary thumb knuckle and clamping the primary hand to the grip.

2 years late to the party but i use the same grip. I learned to shoot on a revolver first makes trying to not use my thumbs feel extremely weird.

@@redgreen6436 They're great except for one small thing, and that one reason is why high end professionals usually avoid the CZ 75 (and CZ 97) : Due to the inverted slides, a lot of retention holsters like the Safariland ALS won't work on them. When I got my start in the line of duty I had a CZ 75 that I shot IDPA with and actually had to buy a whole another pistol (went with Sig P226 then switched to Glocks) for duty work. They're fantastic pistols elsewhere, and many competition shooters use the CZ 75 because it fits their role perfectly. Remember: the world of firearms is infinitely subjective. Like if you choose to EDC a CZ-75 for conceal carry? I would have a very hard time dissuading you. CZ is a solid make.

This is the first video I've seen that explains and contrasts the thumb over thumb grip. I'm planning on going to Front Sight Institute next year and that's what they teach, which I thought was antiquated! Must try it.

I've shot thumbs forward my entire life. Now that someone has taken the time to explain thumb-over-thumb properly, I'm really impressed by how much stronger that feels. I gotta get out to the range this weekend.

I agree. I feel my wrists are stronger in the thumb over thumb and I have more control over the pistol. In addition, I also shoot revolvers .357 and 44 magnum colts. If you try thumbs forward on these revolvers, I guarantee you will never place thumbs forward again.(it's self correcting...:) So, now I only have one grip style to use for both semi-auto and revolver. It keeps thing's simple..

Finally someone pointed out that his technique has pros and cons. Nothing about "my way is the best way, nor the others". As it was said, it's personal, but have to be "dry trained" enough to know what is best for you and your possible use of the firearm. I appreciate it a lot for it's unprecedential use of the firearm grip. Not everyone is able to use the presented gripping, but this was not a referee type of "unless you will use THIS technique, you'll have a problem" video. Thx again.

I've been using grip number two 20 plus years, its hard for me to go with the more new school thumbs forward. Hard to change this late in the game. I could never say either is right or wrong. Great video. Same goes for the super long arm support hand rifle stance. I've tried.

I noticed that, when you guys were together showing the grip, your left thumb was high and appeared to be resting on the slide. When you were firing, your thumb moved down below the slide, which is obviously where it should be. Just an observation for viewers to be aware of so they hopefully don't slice their thumbs when the slilde kicks back. Also, it's interesting that every other "professional training" YT video that I've seen shows the left index finger on the left side of frame just under the slide, and you guys show all four left fingers wrapped around the right fingers. I think your way provides a more solid clamp on the gun to reduce recoil and keep the gun pointing forward. Keep up the good work, I definitely learned something here.

have watched tons of grip videos. tried many different things from many different people and also what i experimented with. really struggling to find the sweet spot of grip for the small g43. this video added a new perspective. and so far in the dry firing it gives the most consistent results. going to try it out tomorrow. thanks.

Just came back from the range. Used only six 6round mags for practice. 80% of groupings inside 2nd circle (100mm diameter) Wicked! The confidence and certainty this kind of grip gives is unreal. It made all the difference.

My Dad utilizes the thumbs over grip, but I use thumbs forward...He carries a S&W 6906 and I carry a Glawk. With thumbs forward, I rotate my elbows outward and get a lot of isometric pressure on the side of the frame, without having to grip the gun so hard, and thus making it a lot easier on my sissy hands. It works for me, so I keep shooting that way. Great video, as always.

Good video. With the current ammo shortage, lock downs, etc - it's been so long since I've been shooting I actually had to get out my gun to see which grip I use. I've been using the crossed thumbs grip. It feels the most natural to me, only because that's what I've always used. But I think when I'm able to start shooting regularly again, I'll try out the thumbs forward grip to see if I can make it work. Thanks gentlemen!

I use to have a ancient browning .32 pistol that was so old the sides of the handles were held on with elastic band. That thing had a pistol grip safety lever down the spine of the handle, where you would have to choke the grip and compress the lever so tight & hard for it to disengage so a round would fire. Almost as much as a balding 50yr old troll that lives in his mother's basement chokes his chicken.

Greatly appreciated video utilizing both grips. Dealing with a bastardly tennis elbow( inner and outer ) . As I feel my grip loosen, I switch between grips. Still struggling but shot placement is improving.

Great explanations! Thumb over thumb feels a lot more comfortable and natural to me. When i lock that right hand thumb down the gun feels more secure to me than the thumbs forward grip.

Also should be mentioned that everyone's hands are built differently. But these techniques are solid. So if you're finding that it's uncomfortable or not working out how they're showing it, your pistol may have too small/large of a grip. You may need to adjust this with different grip pads, tape, etc. to fix the issue.

I'm a 62 y/o woman and due to age, my thumbs have begun deforming due to joint issues, so neither of these work for me but I get as close as possible. I agree it's has to be up to each individual to keep practicing and decide for yourself which way is best and safest. Great video. Thanks.

I like the skateboard tape. Never thought about the gritty particles coming off but cleaning the gun will probably mitigate that. I have used tape on my Beretta 92FS for 6 years now and no problems, same pieces of tape. One thing I do prior to applying the skateboard tape to my pistol(s) is I rub two pieces of the skateboard tape together to remove some of the gritty materiel. No a whole lot, but to the point where it does not rub my skin off. It also removes loose gritty material that new tape always has. For my firearms usage, this works out to my benefit.
