@Aroma Skin - I'm not the greatest fan of his actual style and all his Music, but in terms of voice and singing skills he's always been one of *the* best singers in the World and of all time, in my book 🙂
This song on vinyl sounds incredible at volume 11. Absolute shock when I found the LRB Greatest hits vinyl in a small Scottish town music market held in a town hall a couple years ago. Just about fell over in amazement, couldn't wait to get back home and play it!!
Can you explain the lyrics to me? Im so confused. Australia doesnt have a border with anybody. So whats he talking about? Iran? Singapore? The US? What does he mean "how dumb we've been" i love the riff i just dont know if i should sing it without knowing if its supposed to be political and if so... How?
@@blaisemacpherson7637 It’s about borders in general. In a couple of lines the song is talking about the Berlin wall. The reference to Singapore is because at one stage the Singaporean officials at airports would cut the hair of male tourists with long locks. At that time it was only a few years since the Shah was deposed in Iran and nobody wanted to cross that border.
Farnham was a great stand in for Glenn Shorrock. With Birtles and Goble as the accompanying voices. Had the Little River Band ever survived without Shorrock, it would/should have been with Farnham for sure. Even if Glenn had came back on board, Farnham should have stayed as an asset voice to the band. That would have been one hell of a line up and complemented the line up for sure. Unfortunately with all the legal issues LRB has had in the past 20+ years with the ownership of the name and Glenn, Beeb, and Graeham having to form Birtles, Shorrock, and Goble, it's unfortunate the original line up can't come back on board with their rightful name THE LITTLE RIVER BAND!! The courts fouled up on this one folks.....Glenn, Beeb, and Graeham ARE "THE LITTLE RIVER BAND"....PERIOD!!
a Great combination L R B and John Farnham.......one of the best singers Australia has produced , and he deserves more recognition...one of the worlds best voices. And one of the worlds greatest bands ..iN LRB......nothing around like this anymore so glad I was born in '59.....
There are only 2 bands that leave me speechless. They are LRB and The Eagles. There is nothing like them today. Total talent. All real. Main stream no longer has this talent. These were real bands with incredible performance's. Ohh how we have lost over the years.
I saw them live in Queenstown with the Doobie Brothers. They opened with a version of Lonesome Loser...just wow. The guy on the bass in this video here was the lead vocalist for that show (played bass as well).
The guy has some talent, but all I ever hear him doing is screeching, playing vocal gymnastics, and big grins and smiles that don't suit the lyrics and meaning of the songs. Does he, or you reading this, even know what this 'Down On The Border' song means, and add to that 'The Other Guy' , a song of infidelity and heartbreak, which he also grins and smiles the whole way through, sheez.
@@funkysouldancer1 LOL@ One successful album and a couple of singles LOL@ LRB poor album sales with him as lead. LOL@ No one in America wanting him. LOL@ Living off one song (You're The Voice) for the last 36 years ...
1:55 - 2:23 EPIC! John had an incredible voice....he could have been f'ing huge. The talent was begging to be taken world-wide. Stupid management lacking the big-game vision.
? They didn't want him. Capitol Records didn't want him as lead for LRB either. The guy has some talent, but all I ever hear him doing is screeching, playing vocal gymnastics, and big grins and smiles that don't suit the lyrics and meaning of the songs. Do you even know what this 'Down On The Border' song means, and add to that 'The Other Guy' which he also grins and smiles the whole way through, sheez.
@@markmark5269 Awwww. How cute. I should be chuffed that you think I'm young enough to have a mother who's still alive. How about you stand in for Mummy and explain them to me - or don't you know either?
I just got back from the border And what I saw made me know for sure We're out of order I had a dream about New Orleans At Jackson Square I heard their prayer Down in New Orleans On the run, there's a life for livin' But the people there, they just don't care Livin' their life like a millionaire Down on the border You never see me in old Iran The women there don't know who I am In old Iran And I never will go to Singapore The people there will cut your hair In Singapore On their streets there's a life of plenty Oh but they'll never know about the freedom show Their livin' in darkness years ago down on the border They built a wall at the border Not to keep us out But to leave no doubt They're out of order, hey And all the people who are trapped within Serve to show just how far we'll go And how dumb we've been At the top life looks so easy But they'll never know what they'll never know They're much too busy countin' all their dough From the border
Years ago at TAFE college one of my teachers there was John’s sound guy and told us the part about getting their haircut at Singapore was true as the weren’t allowed in with long hair. He showed us pictures from back then.
As I get older... 77.. I am starting to appreciate John Farnham. From 2019 looking back, the current music lacks soul, musicianship etc. I guess my distaste arose because he was over exposed, thus losing immediacy and surprise. Farnham in the 80s and 90s was a bit like hearing three hundred versions of the Beatles... Hard Day's Night... which ultimately became boring as did so many songs repeated ad nauseum at drunken musos parties etc. To hear Mr. Farnham with members of the LRB is so cool. Come back good harmonies and great musicianship PLEASE.
There should be a compulsory Welcome to Australia pack made up with a CD or a audio stick with featured Classic songs and this should be on it as should JPY's Soldier of Fortune which I believe was around the same era as this classic.
Seen Johnny 3X in concert; 2X solo and once with LR.. Hands down THE best singer with his damn perfect pitch LIVE. Michael Jackson...nahhh. Stevie Wonder...nahhh. Johnny Farnham is the best!
THIS is the version I remember from years and years ago! The version on the LRB Greatest Hits CD (and subsequently my iPod) has a different ending, despite still being sung by John Farnham. :-o
Not any more. I remember getting off a ship and having to get my hair cut at the wharf before we went through customs when I went there in the late '60's or early '70's.
Singapore government used to force men to get their hair cut if it reached their shoulders. This included tourists if they wanted to stay and not get put straight back on a plane.
All my life I love Jonny I remember when my mother katarina had her operation in fern tree gully John was there with his dad I love you John get well ❤you the best good looking man in au

I just can't get enough of Little River Band since I've discovered them. Even though they've got a lot of line up change I salute to all the members cuz they're all so great. 🫡
