alright guys in this video I had the chance to install a Texas speed cam, double valve springs and push rods into this ls1 swapped 69 nova, he went with a torquer v2 cam with a 112 lsa, any questions tips or tricks comment below, I'm not perfect but this is how I've done it for years.

I wouldve threw a nice oil pump/pickup oring and new timing chain on while I was at it, maybe some nicer lifters. A few more hours to really freshen it up. A cam job nonetheless!

Dude i know thats a roller camshaft and lifters but you still have to cover the cam in some kind of assembly lube just to enseure nothing happens down the road you probably caused premature wear doing that!

I know its not the best thing to use but I always soak my cams in the thickest oil I have laying around. But your right assembly lube is the best thing to use

I noticed the lack of assembly lube, but that was still the best video on the web. It does my heart good to know there are still Hotrodders and you are Hotrodders in every sense of the word. It was great that you published on the sixtieth anniversary of me bending over a fender, I bought a $3.00 1947 chev for my 12th birthday and it ran. I'm still at it here in L.H.C.,AZ. So if I understood right which ever springs your going to replace lets say all of them you can start with 1 & 6 so you set it at top dead so it keeps the valves up then you move on to the next rotate it 90 to get to 8&5 then replace the valves and so on. Am i right ?

Yes exactly, top dead center is insurance incase the valve falls

On a stock motor with stock heads, using a stage 1 cam, do I get the stock length pushrods 7.40. Because they sell so many different sizes. 7.42, 7.40, 7.375. I assume those are for different heads.

Unless the center lobe changed on the new cam or you're not using stock lifters then yes you'll be fine. Factory roller lifters have a preload from anywhere of .60 to .100. Only way to know is to assemble and check pr length with a checker tool.

I put a comp thumper cam and springs in my 02 Silverado 8 years ago. 5 years ago I blew the 5.3 up hydrolocked it going thru lots of mud and water too fast with cold air intake. took the cam n springs out and put it in the new junkyard 5.3 motor like a fuckin champ

dude i bought that valve spring compressor from amazon that does one side at a time oh fuck man,damn,im doing mine thats in a 05 chevy blazer so no room and very uncomfortable since its up on jack stands,the cheap compressor wont stay lined up in the middle to get the keepers in and so you have to keep loosening it then move the spring around then tighten it and them BANG !!!!!!!!! the fucking tool snapped in half parts went flying hit me in the face,luckily i found the keepers but i was so pissed it took hours just to do a few cylinders,i do 1,6,5,and one of them on cylinder 8 then it broke,so i have to order a good one like your using monday,im so mad im going to tell them to over night it to me,i dont care if its 200.00 anyways if anyways doing the swap in a tight space like me,i would get a good one,one that does two at a time,the one i had kept sliding around so bad man damn haha oh well live and learn right.good luck guys

The stock rocker bolts are 24 foot pounds aftermarket bolts are 26, I use blue Loctite, if you have good trays there is no need for any wooden dowels.

Wooden dowels as a just in case. Last thing you want to hear when you're pulling the cam is that dull thud of a lifter hitting the crank because it fell out of the bucket :P

They have some on Amazon, just type in the year and make of your vehicle to make sure it's a compatible match. shit my valves dont come up that easy,i sure as hell cant lift them with my fingers,i have to try like hell to pry them up with something and the tool keeps slipping off but my main problem is the fucking keepers man,im using the single spring remover which slides around and shit,i was trying to get the valve dead center and then just drop in the keepers like you did but it takes hours just for one,i did find another way,just to hold them with my fingers and then let the spring back up with my other hand,yea it would help if i had help,and this method i swapped two springs in less than 5 minutes and then bammmmm my tool broke again the nuts are cheap so they strip and go flying,im going to the hard ware store in the morning to see if they have some good nuts lamo,fuck this is taking way too long,i ordered a tool like yours for two at a time and summit sent me the wrong one for my L96 6.0 nobody knows shit about this engine man.

Yes sir, you just need to remove your radiator and being a 2000 you need to remove your clutch fan assembly. With that out of the way its the same steps. I should have a Silverado cam video shortly

Why would you suggest swapping out pumps if the car has healthy oil pressure? I would much rather swap it of course but that's labour my customers usually don't want to pay for. I always say it's recommended but not necessary if you haven't had oil pressure issues.

Oh, I see you added known point of failure. What I've seen fail is the pick up tube o ring and incorrectly shimmed pump gears. Have yet see a pump it self fail. Not that it can't happen! Knock on wood lol

@@BoBuilds relief valve starts sticking or becomes weak in the pump, then you get a sudden loss of pressure. Could be intermittent or a permenant loss. Pulling the engine out of my 06 gto now to replace it, going to be doing a complete reseal of the engine, cam and valve trane upgrade while im at it. Firm believer in "get it done while your in there" mentality. Atleast with my GTO lol, never just repairing it, always get a mod upgrade while fixing an issue

ya with customer vehicles, you just get it done of course, but cant hurt to make the recommendation, could save the potential uncomfortable conversation resulting from a customer who gets a cam swap or some other engine mod done and then a couple of days or weeks later wipes their motor from loss of oil pressure and looks at you like its your fault because "you were the last one to touch it"... to mechanics, spending $60-120 bucks in parts to save a 10k engine is a no brainer, and again "if your in there, get it done", but I digress. lol

Sure, could be cleaner, but the humble ingenuity of those under a tree, & their ability to adapt to circumstance has kept countless things running for more years than even you have been alive. That being said, timing advance is ground into the camshaft; the cam gear is fixed to the cam & aligned with a dowel pin, & isn't adjustable on a LS1 engine. So, before wasting everyone's time as they wade through mire of drivel spewing from that geyser on your smug & angry face; stop, find a tree, cool off, and find some manners, you IGNORANT & ARROGANT prick. Shame on you.

GreaseMonkeyMods when doing my cam swap i got my wooden dowels stuck they broke while being inside . How can I get them out? Removing heads , or dropping trans and pushing them all the way out the back?

I know this may seem petty but it drives me crazy to watch people put parts back on after doing a cam or oil pump or heads and they don’t clean them. Like around 16 minutes when they are reassembling the covers. Just looks rushed and sloppy.

If the piston is at TDC, there won’t be enough room for the valve to drop. You can feel the piston through the spark plug hole to be certain it’s at TDC.

Yes. You need to also push the lifters up and hold them up. Like he did with a dowel. Use wood or plastic, not a metal incase you scratch the alloy block, or chip the lifters

The best way to do it is to torque it to 22LBS while on the base of the cam lobe so that its not under tension. I usually just torque to 22 spin the motor over a couple times and recheck

Nope, there's no valve lash to adjust or anything. As long as they are all tight your good to go

Hey haters, sure they didnt check some clearances and they weren't perfect but do you remember when you were a kid and doing this and the thrill you got to experience and all the mistakes you learned from. I'm proud for these kids. i was just like them and now I'm older and an ASE Master Diesel and Gas guy and racer with 40 years experience. Keep it up guys!!! Have fun.
