After a painful 2-3 months of sanding, welding, bondo, more sanding and then some sanding, our C5 Corvette chassis Jeep roadster thing is painted!! Is it perfect, absolutely not, but I’m pumped!! It looks soo much better than it did and I learned a lot through this brutal diy body work / paint process.

I do not like the project of virtually destroying a C5 Corvette. That being said, let us get to the project. What a great learning curve In ALL ASPECS of modification, construction, sheetmetal, engineering, etc. You recognize what you have learned and what you have not learned; you have shown the ability to handle success, failure, and changes in mid-stream to achieve a desirable end result as you move along your path of success/failure. Coming from the negative attitude of Corvette destruction to a project completion has been an opportunity to see you grow you skills. Watched everyone of the films (old school) and they were very good even the comic affects. Yes, you have learned a lot with still more to learn; keep going, Tiger! You set the path and the conditions you will follow in the future which I think will be very good. I have looked at this from a hobby of restoring sports cars over the years along with skills from being an aircraft A&E technical (FAA Acft & Power plant technician; Acft Inspection). Looking forward to the finished project.

I don't know if this will be helpful, but I was taught that you should keep the pressure at 20psi and try to keep your gun square on and 12 inches from what you're painting for the best finish. However, its been about fifteen years since I resprayed my last car, so my memory could be a little sketchy on the detail... Looks like you're already doing that or close to it though. Umm... why didn't you wrap your tires up?

If you paint another car and wanna see the imperfections you can get a spray bottle and see em on the primer a lot easier. Never painted a car but it’s something I picked up when I trained 2 years for body/paint work. Finally got the courage watching tour vids to paint my own car. GOOD JOB!!!!!

As usual Pres, love the dad jokes. As far as the paint work, the only person you need to make happy is you. You have come a long way, learned from your "mistakes", gone back and fixed what you felt needed to and lived with what you didn't. As usual great work young padwan. Soon you too shall become the master.

I wanted to tell you about my first paint Job. It was a warm summer day way back in 1987 I knew nothing about painting or paint guns. I thought the fan went the same way the front of the gun went, well as you well know it's opposite. So I was putting the paint on my 1973 Chevy LUV ( Light Utility Vehicle) and by the time I got to the same side I started on I had runs so bad it was dripping on the floor. I swear to God this is a true story. So I then found out how the gun worked. I waited two weeks for the paint to dry and then stared sanding (by hand no power tools) then I painted the truck again and added stripes three different colors and added pin stripes to separate the colors. It looked fantastic after people saw the truck I started painting cars and trucks for all my friends. The last car I painted has won 3 first place trophy's and best of show at two event's. The moral of this story is I didn't know anything about painting cars and went on to do fantastic work you my friend are way ahead of me I can't wait to see what you do next. Your first paint job is really good and some wet sanding and buffing and you will solve all your imperfections... Good Job
@Dennis-eh2vx
@Dennis-eh2vx 3 года назад
If your viscosity isn’t right and/or u keep using fast converters and reducers the paint doesn’t have time to level out properly with orange peel as a result. And those higher temps don’t help you either. Now you keep adding more paint in order to drown the orange peel but with the risk of creating runners. And that did happen didn’t it. Even thousands of pinholes could have come to the surface when you build up to thick and to fast with a fast mixed clear and high temperatures. It literally will start to boil after an hour or so and really tiny bubbles will occur which eventually will burst leaving thousands of pinholes. But luckily that didn’t happen. If I was you I would use a slow ore medium converter en a slow reducer in a warm climate like yours. And start with a thin wet layer and than, with patience build it up slightly thicker. Oh, and don’t forget to coat the extra weld you did in your wheel Weld left rear otherwise it will rot through your fender quite fast from the inside out. One more piece of advice, you might wanna use a gide coat, then you will notice the small imperfections in the primer or the transition from primer to bondo better. I hope you’re not offended by my unasked given advice and hope it might actually help you in your next project.

lacquer thinner is a much better gun cleaner (and cheaper?) than acetone. And I have the same gun! I'm painting my XJ (Project Bumble Jeep, check it out) with it. Using Rustoleum safety yellow. No clear coat, but I am using enamel hardener. You did a nice job. God bless and stay well.

i think the only thing i could pick apart about your painting technique is burst painting is a huge NO! and only going to the edge on your passes when you should go a little bit further, otherwise i think this thing came out better than you were expecting it to which is why youre happy with it. i like it i think its cool and the imperfections youre worried about dont mean anything considering how far its come and how many panels were frankensteined together. good job and way to keep moving forward! i hit that like button for the dad jokes

U had to much pressure and the paint volume was a little fat and use a wider fan patern and hold your gun 10 to 12 inches from the surface and you wont get that. Bad orange peal sometimes ill mix fast and medium thinners to get a better layout of paint
@watahyahknow
@watahyahknow 4 года назад
good idea with the light reflection , you can realy see when the orangepeel starts to flow out and you need to stopp adding paint done a good job , the bodywork is 99.9 percent of the quallity of the paintjob thats why it takes so long to get a quallity paintjob when you bring youre car to a professional painter they do this stuff for a job and they burn out on that stuff too
