Today at Ugly Truck, we're talking about everyone's favorite LS swap topic: WIRING. Whether you're swapping a 1985 Chevy truck or a Jaguar, it's important to understand how these circuits work. We discuss 12 volt batteries, how power is distributed, how relays work, and how it all comes together to start and run the engine. We also talk about wiring diagrams, how to read them, and deciding which circuits you'll need to power up. Every project is different, so you'll need to know the specifics of your engine, transmission and harness, as well as the vehicle it's going into. But with a little know-how and the right wiring diagrams, it can be done. Hopefully this video gives you the info you need to jump into it!
Thanks for watching! Stay tuned for the next video, where we'll be tackling the wiring on the 85 C10 5.3 project! Click here to get caught up on the swap! • 1985 Chevy C10 - LS SW...

I want to thank you two for going so in-depth with explaining your process! I am doing a LS swap into my 1946 Chevy truck and am using a 2001 suburban 6.0/ 4L80 donor. This truck has absolutely no wiring at the moment so I will be creating all the circuits myself. What fuse blocks are you using and connector set ? I love the simplicity (at least you made it seem that way) of the ‘85 wiring.

Glad we could help! I'll put the links to the fuse blocks and connectors below. Check out this video too... It's specific to this 85 C10 and a 5.3/4L60E, but it will show you how we set up the fuses and relays for each circuit. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d8mcQl-rYr4.html Just let us know if you run into any snags, and we'll do our best to help you out! www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08KHVHLL5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1 www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01G9V4PC2/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

How can I wire the low oil light up to work in 72 Chev swap to work?
@miketodesco6915
@miketodesco6915 10 дней назад
Hi guys , got a question for you. I am working on an ls swap project and have come up with some dilemmas. When you have a neutral safety mechanism in your column as well as the one on the 4L80 trans, which do you choose, same goes for the starting wiring to the solenoid. Are there reasons to pick one over the other? Love your channel, lots of good info!
@UglyTruckExperience
@UglyTruckExperience 8 дней назад
Hello Mike. I eliminate the original switch and use the newer version on the 4l80. I use the original purple starter wire to trigger the newer starter relay if using the donor harness and fuse box. Thanks. Jerry

Awesome channel! Very informative! I am currently swapping an LM7, freshly machined, into my 86 Chevy P30 Grumman Food Truck. My confusion with all this wiring, I feel like I'm going to have issues with electrical. The LS will be mated to the trucks' original TH400. Will I need anything for the Trans and PCM to talk to each other? Also, mostly everything are new OE parts that I've ordered, such as a Suburban radiator. I would like to convert to E-fans. Watched your awesome video on it. I assume I'll need the brain flashed to accommodate for the conversion. Do you have any advice on tackling all this? Thanks and keep up the great and educational vids!!!
@UglyTruckExperience
@UglyTruckExperience Год назад
If your using the OEM computer and harness. The computer and harness are already set up for the electric cooling fans. You may want to have the computer programmed to turn the cooling fans on at a cooler setting. I run 180 degree thermostats and let the programmer know that and he adjusts it accordingly. For the transmission you will just need to have a vss signal going to your pcm. There are plenty of adapters out there to convert from mechanical to electronic. Sounds like a cool truck. Keep us posted. Thanks Jerry

How did you power up the bosses truck since the coil wire is a resistor wire with points type system was that lower voltage from that wire enough voltage to switch a relay on those had "R"and"S" wires from starter to send 12volt to the coil at crank
@UglyTruckExperience
@UglyTruckExperience Год назад
That is a great question. When we first bought that truck, it had a 307 in it. We put a 350 in it and added a HEI ignition. At that time I would have ran a new wire from the connector at the firewall to replace that resistor wire. That resistor wire would definitely trigger a relay but much simpler just to throw a new non resistor wire in that plug. New connectors for those old plugs are readily available and they pull out of the plug fairly easily. Thanks Jerry

Can you make a video explaining the bulkhead wiring on 1987 R10. I'm stumped on wiring up my PSI stand alone wiring harness with PSI ECU.
@UglyTruckExperience

Hey Raul. What parts of the harness are you having trouble with. We do have some of our recent videos that talk about the bulkhead going into the interior fuse box but they mostly talk about the gauges and getting power to that interior. If you have some specific questions on that PSI I could try to help. Jerry

Decided to go the holley route but overlooked that that harnesses dosent control the starter or alternator curious as to what i need to do to tie them together
@UglyTruckExperience
@UglyTruckExperience 2 месяца назад
Hello Lucas. You would end up having to run the wiring for the starter similar to the way the original vehicles wiring was. Power to the starter and then the wire to the starter solenoid. The alternator would just be wired independent from your harness. How it is wired would depend on what your donor was. Jerry
@LucasisforOil

@UglyTruckExperience hoping that the holley alternator harness will solve that issue I think I've got the starter figured out. Got power wire and wire from neutral safety switch

Battery explanation is a little off. Charge flows from negative to positive. The water analog is incorrect: Voltage is anagolous to the system water pressure. Current is analogous to the flow volume (bigger/smaller hose). Also Power is (Volts * Amps) and measured in Watts or Horsepower (750 W ~ 1HP). The reason wires heat up is because they have resistance. And like the light filament, wire will glow red hot right before it burns itself out because it is not in a vacuume like a lamp filament is. The reason a filament in a vacuume does not typically burn out is because its resistance increases with the current going thru it, so it reaches a steady state of glowing but not buring out. Filament bulbs typically burn out when they are cold (i.e. just when they are turned on) because of the low resistance allows way more current to flow (inrush current) than when burning in steady state. Of course, none of this changes the operational information you expounded upon. What makes car lamp wiring so involved and complex is that bulbs can be single or dual filament and share various current paths. I'm currently tearing my hair out over all-bulbs-test-fine but getting double-rate bliking when running lights on and dimly bliking when brakes applied. BTW, the "Grounding PCM" is technically called "active low switching".
