The Cartune Company (2003) Ltd in New Zealand does 1uz and 3uz conversions / parts and wiring. We have been working on UZ Toyota V8 engines since 2004 when we did our own Hiace van to transport dirtbikes around NZ. Since then we have swapped to doing mainly just Lexus V8 work from a family owned farm hidden away in our paradise , surrounded by the NZ native bush. We sell parts and simple to follow wiring instructions for the 1uzfe engines. For enquiries email info@thecartunecompany.co.nz Take Care. Kelvin

I'm glad you didnt say driver's side and passenger side Kelvin, since the steering wheel is on the wrong side haha...I'm still trying to catch up on your vids but decided to jump ahead to the finish...Great job as usual !!

Hello Billy. You might notice when I say passenger side it comes along with a smart comment. Not my fault you guys drive on the wrong side , we drive on the right side (literally) haha. see there it happened again. Cheers Kelvin

Knock sensors and starters are always FUN to replace on the 1-3uz's..pain in the ass if u ask me. Good opportunity to clean under the intake and check for bad vaccumm lines. Cheers
@CartuneNZ
@CartuneNZ 4 года назад
Once someone has done them a few times they are quite straightforward. And if they are done correctly they last a long time. I have found some interesting stuff under the intake. Cheers Kelvin

Awesome vide. Is there any way to test the knock sensors prior to buttoning up the engine?
@CartuneNZ

Sure is but its more of an advanced topic. If in doubt, throw them out. Cheers Kelvin.

Do you just use another length of wire connected to the multimeter for testing continuity to ecu? ( for reference, the yellow wire around 7:20)
@CartuneNZ
@CartuneNZ 4 года назад
Yes, check resistance of the additional length and its all good. Cheers Kelvin

I didn't hear you mention it but are the 3uz and 1uz knock sensors the same? I have seen conflicting information online that late 1uz vvti knock sensor are the same as early 3uz vvti knock sensors.

Maybe I will do a video on the operation of the knock sensors, and the frequency they work at and then the whole subject is really easy. Cheers Kelvin

You think an unrelated constant misfire could cause a knock code to trigger? Cars got a dead fuel injector so I’m assuming that’s why it’s triggering a knock code
@CartuneNZ
@CartuneNZ 3 года назад
Yes. Many reasons an engine is running uneven can trigger a knock sensor code. I fix other stuff first. Cheers Kelvin

I know is possible you know about this but they are known to have problems on the insulation of the wires to shielding to ground I have see this problem a lot causing ecm damage
@CartuneNZ

They sure do. I make lots of new wiring looms for under the intake manifold.
@bobbuilder5362
@bobbuilder5362 4 года назад
I cut into the loom of my 1JZGTE years ago when running an AFC2. It wanted a knock input for displaying knock I'm assuming. Not long after I had error 52 knock code. Long story short I had to run the engine on one knock sensor, split wiring from one and put two inputs to ECU. Do you think it's worth going back and adding factory style shielded wiring ? as I think simply cutting into the knock wires caused the issue. I just think it's too much of a coincidence that I splice into the wires and not long after get issues. Another great vid btw.

Hello Bob. Hope you are well. I would be running shielded cable myself. I'm seeing a few knock sensor wires breaking down these days. Good luck. Cheers

Why are gen2 3uz have 2 wires per knock sensor?, is the other one is a simple ground?. If so, are they interchangeable with a simple earthing the other wire?
@CartuneNZ
@CartuneNZ 4 года назад
Second wire is an earth however its referenced back to the ecu. Single wire sensor is case grounded and two wire case isolated so I dont recommend interchanging. Cheers Kelvin

Have a UCF10. Had caps replaced by LSCowboy. Replaced all S/plugs and Wires. Car idles smooth on 95 Octane. But........ Car when overtaking under load at say 75mph suddenly jerks. Same happens if I use Kickdown. Using 98ron in France as no 95ron Only place I can do this speed. No fault codes showing on OBD1. About to change the upstream O2 sensors. Could it be the knock sensors? No check engine light appears. Feel could be running lean at speed (slight engine noise change?) Changed Fuel filter, has original MAF sensor. New coil, the easy one to replace, not the other. Damned if I know why it jerks and I have to fall back. Runs beautifully all other times. Passes Omissions - Your wildest guess please

Hello. A correctly repaired ecu is important. I have spare test ecus to swap in to eliminate this as an issue. Often this sort of stuff is the basic stuff , spark plugs , leads , coils , ignition rotors , temp sensors etc. Scoping the knock sensors would also be advisable. Cheers Kelvin

@@CartuneNZ Thanks Kelvin, I mislead you on the OBD saying no faults. Must have checked it without it being in Neutral. Checked again a few days back and it showed Code 25 being weak fuel. I had the front O2 sensors replaced yesterday and the now not showing any codes. Hope its fixed the problem but won't know until can take the car for a good drive after lockdown lifted. Drives lovely in urban areas. Starts instantly. So, I can forget about the knock Sensors - for now, anyway. Stu.

If you swap the plugs with knock sensor #1 and #2 will that give you codes 52 and 55? Also, what if you get knock sensor replacements that fit but have different plugs? Will it still work if you hard wire them?
@CartuneNZ
@CartuneNZ 3 года назад
I cant swap knock sensors around as I always check they are right. If someone does swap them then its very likely codes could result. Any replacement sensor must operate on the correct frequency to be compatible with the uz ecu so getting the correct item is important

@@CartuneNZ thank you for your fast response! I ordered some knock sensors for my 1990 1UZ, but the plugs were different. I was able to hard wire them in as my plugs were pretty much broken. Is it possible that the sensor having a different plug may also result in a different "sensor communication" causing it to not working properly even if hard wired?

Early uz have a round plug then swapped to a shaped moulded plug, I have interchanged between them fine.

Average price to convert manual hilux surf to the 1uz?

Cost is going to depend on where in the world you are. Over here its easy for me to throw 20-25K at a surf doing it properly as a drive in drive out. I have a few customers doing the job themselves and most spend around 10-14K depending on their skills. cheers Kelvin
