DESTROKED TURBO LS3! IS THE LS9 THE MOST POWERFUL FACTORY LS CAM? HOW MUCH POWER CAN YOU MAKE? DOES THE LS9 CAM WORK WITH A TURBO? DOES THE LS9 CAM WORK WITH A BIGGER BLOWER? HOW MUCH BOOST CAN I RUN WITH AN LS9 CAM? CAN I RUN THE LS9 CAM IN MY NA 5.3L? ALL OF THESE QUESTIONS AND MORE ARE ANSWERED IN THIS VIDEO WHERE I TESTED THE LS89 CAM AND THREE DIFFERENT COMBINATIONS, INCLUDING A WHIPPLE SUPERCHARGED B15 LSX CRATE MOTOR, A NATURALLY ASPIRATED 5.3L (BEST INFO IN THAT ONE) AND A TURBO 340-INCH DESTROKED (4.8L CRANK) LS3.

Don't be scared to run a LS9 cam on a 5.3 . I have a LC9 5.3 with a LS9 cam S475 T4 turbo running 18 lbs of boost on pump 93 and water meth . The truck weighs about 4000lbs and it is a rocketship . Full boost by 3500rpm . The biggest reason I picked the LS9 was I wanted a clean smooth idle at 600rpm , the exhaust smells clean even with no cats and I get decent fuel economy as well. Do I need more low end torque , absolutely not I have a hard time hooking as is with 29 inch Nitto 555r drag radials if anything the cam helps me put the power down . If you daily your project I can't recommend the cam enough and the price point helps as well. Also remember this cam was designed for longevity in mind as well and is easy on the valve train . Is it at all out race cam no! But it works for my intended. purposes.

I always wondered about the guys obsessed with making torque down low. Seems it might be good for an everyday use truck but maybe not for a car that wants to hook up on the rare occasion it may go full throttle.

LS9 worked well as an SBE turbo street strip cam. Limited power down low where the rods and ringlands fail. Also where tires just spin on the street. Then made lots of steam above 5500. Loose converter, transbrake, and 7500rpm made it a good turbo cam for me. Took my SBE gen3 5.3 to 8.90’s @ 3000lbs and cruised like minivan on the street. Price point is also hard to beat, that wasn’t really discussed. It’s likely the cheapest “OEM quality race” camshaft out there to purchase new.

Stock was a dynojet it made 381/376 after the LS9 cam I saw 419/402 with a subpar tune. Interestingly enough TQ at 3000 was up 20ft/lbs with LS9 cam, I totally expecting the reverse. The LS9 Cam definitely has it's place as a (free to $99) cheap and effective option. Prior to becoming completely obsessed with building a big CID High Compression DI N/A GenV, I had considered another route for a specific SWAP application and the LS9 Cam made complete sense. I had planned to do a factory 5spd 2WD Colorado LSA Supercharged 4.8L LS Swap, as no one wants them, and rebuild with an LS1/6 Overbore from 4.8L to 5.1L since I would be buying pistons/rods anyway. The LS9 Cam would have been far more than enough to satisfy the breathing needs of the setup, while keeping the bottom end soft enough in a light vehicle to not be an axle breaker/tire chatter/trans breaking machine, still having a good top end and overall drivability.

@@veganjoy MAST and LME are on my radar. My plans are very basic, but I have only seen Aluminum LT blocks sleeved out to 4.125" and I was hoping for 4.185" and do a 454 standard deck height LT and just order the 454r LS Rotating Assembly from GM Perf Parts and call it a day. Nothing fancy, just 12.0:1 on Pump Gas and use LT4 Injectors (as it's only going to be N/A). Not even sure if it's worth going aftermarket LT heads vs simply porting LT1 heads. My biggest concern is the Oil system. The variable vane LT pumps kinda scares me. Alternatively I could just use OEM GM parts and do an LT1 Corvette Dry Sump setup. I just don't want it to cost more for an N/A setup than it would have to just build a 427cu LT1 and turbo it.

I'm running an LS9 cam in an LY5 block 5.3l with stock 9.9:1 compression, TBSS intake, 92mm TB, mostly stock 799 heads with better springs, and shorty headers in a lightweight CJ5. It makes plenty of torque down low for the Jeep, and it really builds as you rev it out as your dyne graph shows. It's also very civil for just driving around town with good vacuum and a reasonable idle.
@wht240sxka
@wht240sxka Год назад
Similar to the direction of my current build. For the cam, did you have to change timing cover and reluctor to run that cam? I have a lm7 in my truck, but I believe the one I am building is an L59. Also is a tune required? I plan for tuning with hptuners in the future after I break it in for a few hundred miles and save up. Thanks!
@badgoatoffroad
@badgoatoffroad Год назад
@@wht240sxka The L59 is essentially the same block as the LM7 you have now. My motor was changed to the different timing cover, but the LY5 is a gen iv motor and I'm using the stock reluctor wheel. The cam doesn't care which wheel you use as long as the cam position sensor and tune match the wheel. Yes you will need to tune it before you run it very far as the cam is very different from the stock cam. I wouldn't drive it without tuning it first. It will make less torque down low then the stock cam, but it makes a lot more top end power. You will also want to upgrade the springs in the heads as this cam is really designed to run over 6k rpm. I have my redline cutoff set at 6500, but it would pull to 7k and beyond if I let it. The stock truck valve springs are not designed to handle the higher rpms.

I’m curious if you can make it work the same way compound turbos work. Instead of rigging it up like VW does from the factory (charger feeding turbo, feeding intake), if you rig up a centrifugal supercharger to feed a turbo, to then feed the intake manifold. Would this have the same outcome? It seems east to get 60+ psi out of compound turbos, and I’m curious if this would work the same. Any chance of a Harmonic Damper test? ATI has claims that their Damper "makes HP" and I have heard from other sources that claim to have dyno tested this theory that the ATI did show the most average HP across the graph when compared to other brands and OEM generally makes the most HP because it weighs less. This seems like an easy enough test to just swap out balancers and make a hand full of pulls. One video I saw even though the motor made 2 less HP they said the motor "sounded better" or quieter because of reduced harmonics.

I view the LS9 cam as a way of GM getting the peak numbers it wanted while reducing powertrain stress (for fewer warranty issues) at lower speeds, where extra torque production from the blower setup with a better low-speed cam would have been pointless. Hey Richard, I’ve got a bone stock LM7 mated w/ a 4L60E in 2000 Silverado. I’ve been watching your videos for a while and have come to trust your extensive research. In my truck everything’s 100% stock. I have heard that the transmission can only hold 600ish HP. That being said I assume if I make 600 crank HP that it would be close to 500 wheel? (That’s what I’d like to have) If that’s the case, i really want to work my truck up to 600 crank HP. My problem doing so, is I want to do it in steps on a budget as I learn more about engine building. What upgrades would you recommend starting with? Could you give me a brief breakdown on cheap, easy and gains I ‘could’ expect? I thought cheap turbo but I’m scared it’ll make too much boost and destroy my stock trans (if you have a video that explains this could you link it to me please sir?) Thank you

@mythos000000025 Год назад
I have the l33 aluminum 5.3. The truck intake manifold is good(the denali may have the newer 5.3) but you may want to upgrade for a larger throttlebody. Exhaust and cam with tune will get you that 500hp or very close. The accessories will rob some power but you'll be really close. The 6L if you don't need the weight savings is nice due to the fact that it either hadbrec port heads or can fit them. From the factory the rec port heads are just superior to the cathedral ones...ported is different but their are many great factory rec port heads that flow ported head numbers and used are cheap. It's very easy to get 500hp+ out of a 6L with mild selection of parts. And that's with good torque as well. 600hp is fairly easy to achieve on stock internals with a careful selection of parts..but you'll loose some power down low as tha trade-off. I personally stroked mine for the torque, wish I had ported the heads(799's) but upgraded everything to handle boost and 7200rpm. Good luck, personally I'd look at how much they want for each and the mileage and condition of the motor and choose from there

More power up top wins period. You aren't in that low rpm much when racing maybe on the launch but once you pass that rpm range you never see it again through a run so the top end makes alot more difference as far as an all out wot run. On the street you spend more time in that range so you may wanna go with the one with more torque that is up to how you want your powerband but as far as which one would be quicker in an all out run the one with more top end is gonna pull.
