I'm not an oboeist, however it is fun to watch him. He gives very thorough, helpful audition tips, and good help. Truly a master of his instrument. Also, how nice of him to explain how to double tongue.
I used to play the oboe in an orchestra. I have not played it for perhaps twelve years! I felt like an absolute beginner at first, but after ten minutes my fingers started to move on their own! My biggest problem is the reeds. My lips are out of shape, and the reeds are not in the best condition. My lips also get slippery from saliva :) I have ordered new reeds online, can't wait to get back on the horse. You are a true master ,skillful and passionate. I hope to see more videos!
Vaya, hacia tiempo que no veía a Emanuel. Está echando barriguita jejeje. Pero sigue siendo un fenómeno. Que bien toca y que gran músico es. Gracias por compartirlo.
they're both woodwinds, physical appearance is about all they have in common. Oboe is a double reed versus clarinet's single, has a higher part, and is overall more different to play. It also sounds much more interesting, in my opinion. :)
Using samples like I do, I really like how oboe sounds but until I saw this guy I didn't really know how to use the expressions I have in the samples library. So it finally becomes truth that you have to know how a specific instrument is capable of expressions to actually create believable sounding from samples. I've been ignorant all this time but thanks to him I am no more. (To all sample-haters - my music is for my ears only so don't complain ;) )
Exactly! That's the same thing I say when people are able to put soul into their music, play technical pieces, but don't understand the history or theory behind it. You have to have a good understanding of the music itself before you can truly perform it.
@KevinR3i A good reed plays a bit role in that. The other thing is your embouchure; don't bite on the reed, just put lots of pressure. Maybe pressure isn't the right word, it's the speed of the air. This takes years of practice which is why I think the oboe is one of the most difficult instruments, perhaps the most difficult.
@jat12398 Tricky note. Try to pull the reed a few mm in so that the upper part of the double reed (the part in your mouth) has more freedom/room to vibrate in your mouth. With some reeds, however, high D, D# and E are very difficult to get.
Ah, the internet. Someone posts something amazing and people just bicker endlessly in the comments about stupid things. To Emanuel: thank you for sharing this. Beautiful playing, and very insightful.
Well, you can buy them online, but they are disgustingly expensive a lot of the time! I suggest ask the other oboes if they can get you a hold of someone who can make your reeds, or even a teacher! :)
@onotuoedaul You can, but its alot different. I ended up quitting singing because it was affecting my playing in a negative way, but the vibrato works for both oboe and singing. It all just depends on how much work you are willing to put into each different skill.
I have the same kind of problem! I'm in 9th grade, too. I don't have braces, but I think it may have something to do with the reeds. Do you buy reeds from your local music store or do you have them made? (either by you or someone else?)
well reeds definitely matter. i have a teacher who makes them and it is easy to tell tyhe sound difference between store bought and hand made. i suggest u buy handmade ones or have someone make u reeds. :)
@BreyerReinerTex Do you mean reed as in a wrapped, ready to play reed, or the cane that you use to make a reed? If you meant the first option, then I would suggest in the long run trying to learn how to make your own reeds. Almost all Oboe players make their own reeds mainly because cheap, store bought reeds generally suck. If you're talking about the second option, then I would suggest Oboe works, but the company is going out of business.
So, this is just a question I wanted to ask any fellow oboists, but if an oboe player can do a glissando on the reed alone with only a year and a half of experience, does that mean that they are particularly gifted in any way?
I WANT TO PLAY THE OBOEEEE !!! i am studing to be a singer, and i've been told that you can do both, because of the muscles you work in different things... is this true? a real reason?? i waaant an oboeeeeeeee
Someone help! I play in two orchestras and I'm in 9th grade. Both orchestra's conductors keep telling me to play louder, even though I am already blowing to the full extent before I squeak or sound like whispering air. What are ways to play louder? PS: I have braces....does that affect this situation? Or any situation related to the oboe? Thanks in advance
The clarinet doesn't hurt that much. I play oboe & clarinet and I never needed a thumb cushion... but I guess that's after 4 years of playing without one ;D
@hhoelper only bands with taste would have oboes. because what kind of bands would be incomplete? what if your band tried to play a piece of music with an oboe passage? it would fail. even if another instrument substituted. the oboe was a very prominent woodwind back in times. if anything, an ensemble would rather go without a clarinet.
So...why would you not want to play oboe? lol I've been playing violin for 8 years and I'm thinking of choosing oboe as my 2nd instrument for my bachelor degree :) so pretty
I want a new oboe SO bad :'( i'm still playing on a student one and it is a piece of crap, i got to try a really nice one at an oboe/bassoon clinic and it was amazing i could like vibrato so easily and it made me really hate mine haha i wish i had the money for it :(
We're talking about differences of two instruments, that has NOTHING to do with playing music. Otherhand, if you dont know anything about your instrument, then you can't play _the music_, you're so worried about. When playing music, you need all three: technic, brains and soul.
I buy them from my local music store and they're so terrible. Half of them are cracked right down the middle and totally usless!! I was going to have private lessons and the teacher would make me free reeds, but she never emailed my mom back. :/
