Krik of Black Owl Outdoors talks about The Genesis from L.T. Wright Handcrafted Knives and uses it to process wood for a small fire. L.T. sent us to the knife to test and evaluate. Composed of A2 Tool Steel, The Genesis features a true Scandinavian grind, micarta scales, a broomstick handle and a leather sheath with a ferro rod attachment.

I'm really fond of this knife. Great review. I also enjoyed the various tips you gave during the review (re-sheathing the knife, stirring the fire that was out, and so on). Take care guys

Thanks. Yeah I honestly didnt think I would as much as I do. The thin blade profile has really exceeded my expectations and the broom stick type handle is awesome. Im going to continue using it for awhile.

I've been trying different knife designs for half a century; and over the years, a few stood out as keepers, while most I don't even remember. Being a long time customer of Blind Horse Knives, I thought I owed it to L.T. Wright to try one of his products after he ventured out on his own. About the same time as this video was released, I purchased the "One Foot In The Wild" Genesis. Surprisingly, I have never held a regular Genesis in my hand; but I have heard that the OFITW version's handle is beefier/thicker, perhaps because of the red liners incorporated with the black micarta scales. If this is true, it's absolutely perfect for my hands; in fact, it is so comfortable, that even after working with it in excess of four hours straight, my hands still had nary a blister or hot spots......... something that most reviews rarely mention (hand comfort after many hours of work). It's been over a year now, and I can say quite honestly, I've finally found "The One". For it's intended purpose, for my hands, this is the best knife I've ever used, and worth every dollar. This was a good video, with a damn good knife. L.T. Wright Knives is one of the best knife makers in the country, and they're sure to have a design that fits your hands, and your needs. If not, talk to them; they'll do their best to make it right, just for you.

Used mine to baton some kindling (cedar plank) while I listened to this video. I’ve had mine for almost three years now. I became more obsessed after seeing it as a recurring character on Alone and I’ve not been disappointed. The only contender in my collection is my BK7, which is like having a knife and a hatchet both in one tool. Very nice video! Well presented and honest!

Great knife, but too big. I'm glad Lt made the Nex Gen smaller version of this classic blade, since I want to edc it. Good vid, thx. **Nice close up shots👍

That blade is beautiful! Reminds me a lot of my Condor Bushlore. Obviously this knife has way better steel and the Bushlore only has hickory handles. Looks very similar though. Love that blade shape, and that sheath as well!

Nice looking knife. I'd have loved to see how well that scallop on the handle makes chest-lever cutting easier. I wish more knives had that scallop.
@BlackOwlOutdoors
@BlackOwlOutdoors 10 лет назад
I didn't find the scallop that useful when I did that particular cut. But, the more I use a new knife, the more I become in-tune with how to use it and how it wants to be used. If that makes sense. Maybe in time I will use the scallop for that cut. Thanks for watching Jesse. -Krik

the light my fire army fire steel fits nice and snug In this sheath, its actually really tight and I don't need anything to hold it in place!
@BlackOwlOutdoors
@BlackOwlOutdoors 8 лет назад
+Justin Packard Yea it works like that when they're pretty new. Or depends where you wear away the rod. But I have old rods that are pretty thin that need to be held in place.

I've been interested in this knife since it was introduced! Thanks for the great review. I have seen a flat grind version more recently introduced. What are your thoughts on the flat ground blade vs. scandi in a knife like this? I'm guessing the scandi is more in tune with bushcraft type tasks while the flat grind would be more of an all around blade?
@BlackOwlOutdoors
@BlackOwlOutdoors 10 лет назад
fubar1217 I wasn't aware they were offering this in a flat grind. Cool. And you're pretty spot on about the different blade grind and their uses. At this thickness of a blade, a scandi will definitely perform better for carving. But, a flat grind will be stronger. It just depends what you want to use the knife for. -Krik

BlackOwlOutdoors Not sure if it's a KnivesShipFree exclusive. I remember the announcement coming out but can't remember if Derrick from KSF said he asked L.T. for a flat grind version or not. The sheath is burnished with wax unlike the old BHK sheaths that were "burnished" with the black paint on stuff that wears off and serves little purpose.
@BlackOwlOutdoors
@BlackOwlOutdoors 10 лет назад
Yea, the welt is burnished. I meant none of the other edges are beveled or burnished. I never saw one of the old BHK sheaths - but I heard they weren't that great. They used paint on their sheaths?? -Krik

Say Heah Krik. Yeah, I finally coming around getting my LT Wright. I think its because of the amount if knives I have in this general size. But also because my vintage Blind Horse Bushcrafter is doing so good when I use it. Yeah, I had it made with a little less belly and air bag the handle made flat and I had the canvas micarta polished, Its a little pointier and it came out looking like a high priced Kepart. I had a good knife that I used last season, I used my Ratmandu, Rodent 5, my Bravo 1, my Mora 2000, Mora Classic #1 in a Piggyback with my Bokor Black Vox Rold, my modified Rodent 6 without top guard and thinner with my Mora 510 as my neck knife, and my Benchmade Bushcrafter #162 Just to name some of the knives I used, I'm sure I forgot to mention some of the others. But I always wanted to get a oointier Bushcraft knife similar to the Ray Mears Woodlore. But I think I got one without waiting 5-10 years and at much less money. Yup, I got the LT Wright GNS. Yup, I got the 3V , in the Saber Grind, since its only 1/8" thick. I also got the Coyote Black Mountain G-10 Handle. and it l@@ks Simply Goats, Beautiful. when lady luck is in your corner, things happen. I also bought a Ka-Bar BK-29 Moses Bowie Kit at a great price that came with the BK-5 and the Snody SnakeCharner which I'll add to my already picked Trio, I planned the 2Hawks Warbeast and the Wicked Tough Saw which I already had just waiting for the specific bush craft knife. The neck knife just fell in. Yeah, I just bought my 2nd. Ka-Bar Kit, The 1St. one was the Limited Edition BK-20 Bundok Bowie that came with the BK-4 and the BK-5, This Kit its the BK-29 Moses Bowie which is a 1;4" smaller than the BK-20, and this kit came with the BK-5 and the Snody SnakeCharmer that's going to be the neck knife. It's made intergral in the S35Vn a pretty good stainless steel. See lucky. But yeah, That GNS is a beauty, Like so saidx I already knew what I wanted to make and I did it. I know I would like that Genesis, But its so close to my vintage Blind Horse Bushcrafter that I was able to pick what I wanted. It was a close three knife choice. The GNS, the Genesis and the Gary Wines Bushcrafter, I think for me and what I was l@@king for, I picked the best for me.,,.
@ndubstar
@ndubstar 8 месяцев назад
For me genesis is too short. Its good for wittling etc but a bigger knife is better. I have a gen 5 which they don’t list anymore. Its just right. The gen 6 thus would be my pick.
@nashwilliams5852

if a knife is just designed for carving, not with or cross grain batoning then what is it for and why not buy a mora for carving.

What do you use for stropping a blade. I am not real good at sharpening and stropping is out of my league but I am getting better. Just need more practice.
@BlackOwlOutdoors
@BlackOwlOutdoors 10 лет назад
Lil Mike Stropping is done with leather and then usually a "compound" added to the leather. There are heaps of videos about it. Like everything, it takes practice and patience. -Krik
