SO much love for this in the comments. I'm a 47yr old dad, started raving in 93. Great times. Still go out now and again, it's easy in London so I'm lucky. Actually met Bukem at Fabric a few months back. Told him I first saw him in 93, he laughed and asked where (Camden Palace now Koko). He was about to go on at 3am, so I thanked him for everything he'd done to this point and he replied, "No, thank you, and everyone who supports this music" Then he played for 2 hours instead of 1 and tore the roof off with GQ. What a geezer. One of the best nights of my life.

1993 - my favourite year for jungle/hardcore. 1992 was the last big hardcore 'rave' year in my opinion and 1994 was the year jungle really blew up and reached the mainstream. But '93 was the magical year when the main music press such as 'Mixmag' and 'DJ' etc were all saying 'hardcore is dead' etc (bollox!) and the music went further underground than it had been in the previous couple of years free to do its own thing. It seems that the producers really started pushing the boundaries this year with so many different styles, such as darkside, jungle, ambient/intelligent, jungle tekno, ragga (continuing what had started in '92 as the BPMs had started creeping up rapidly and the big split between (happy) hardcore and jungle had yet to take place really.) The sound was still quite raw and not as overproduced as what came later from '94 onwards as technology increased and became too polished IMO. So I repeat, for these reasons, 1993 will always be my best hardcore year and produced some of my favourite tunes of all time. Big up to all involved, from the promotors/raves,/clubs to the pirate radio stations in London - Pulse,, Kool, Weekend Rush, Rude, Green Apple etc and the DJs, MCs and producers. And of course to some of my favourite labels - Reinforced, Moving Shadow, Basement, Face, Lucky Spin, Deejay, Formation, Production House, Kemet, White House, Good Looking, Creative Wax, Liquid Wax, Suburban Base, Ibiza, Boogie Beat, Labello Blanco, Underdog etc, etc. Music I will love forever and I will keep my records from this period until the day I die.

I think you're spot on mate, when it's too clean and bleepy it ain't jungle no more. I remember techstep being a thing for a little while, basically jungle dressed up all nice and ready to become d and b. In my opinion, it became more about the mc and less about the beat. I blame Alex Reece's track "feel the sunshine" for the change to techstep, seemed to be more about showing what your kit could do rather than the raver listening. I think Bukem's Atlantis is probably the last record I bought for quite a while. All the best mate.👍

@bad santa I really enjoy it, my only issue is that it's quite hard to get access to these older records. I usually have to order them from discogs or ebay, because a lot of the record stores here don't have jungle, house, trance, etc. that I want to play.

bad santa thanks for the info, I’m really trying to build my collection up. To be honest most of my money in the past year has just been going to records lol, it’s also a shame I have to replace my 44-7’s.
@lol69_52
@lol69_52 5 лет назад
bad santa yeah I’ve actually learned a bit lol. I learned a lot from ellaskins and his tutorials, but I think a lot of it came from just playing around. I learned how to ride the pitch in a really short time, the only issue is my deck aside from the 1200 is garbage. It’s a str8 80 and I swear everyday the motor is about to give out lol. Every time I try to drop a track it always does a really weird speed up and I’ve lost time. I just started recording from my 1200 onto tape and mixing between my tape deck and the 1200. I’ve done a couple other mixes but the first one I ever uploaded is on my other channel djrerun. It should be called dj rerun all vinyl mix or something like that. Half the transitions are terrible because I was still learning about eq and because the str8 80 is so bad for mixing lol, it was also made a few months before I uploaded it so I'm a lot better at it now then I was all those months ago. I’ve also ripped a couple tracks from vinyl on there. I’ve improved a lot so I think I’m gonna start uploading some more, especially when I get enough for my next tt soon. Cheers.

I love this upload - thank you. On listening to this sweet music I considered who may be the best drum n bass DJ and I immediately thought LTJ Bukem, the master in all arenas; selection, mixing, production. I then thought of Randall, Peshay, Hype, Grooverider. For me LTJ is the most timeless. It was a DJ Randall mixtape, with a black case, that first opened up my mind to a whole new world. I remember it vividly - I was 13 or 14 - listening to, what I later found to be called, 'Roni Size - Music Box' on that tape - wow.

Have you checked Bukem, Yaman 6? Okay, it’s from 1992, but I will stand it up against ANY tape from any era as the ultimate blueprint of how to build a set. Skills, knowledge, selection, ‘tune placement’, it covers every single conceivable angle. Some of his sets at Logicals weren’t too shabby either. Heard Andy C a lot in 94, one set in particular stands out (Jungle Fever, Sanctuary 94). Some supreme mixes.

Interesting thing is that I used to love this genre a lot more than I do now and only because I learnt to play the drums. Now the rhythms seem simplistic and even down tempo I think I might try getting authentic live merengue and uptempo Afro-Cuban rhythms and mixing them up with modern electronica to see what happens
