This video shows step by step how to lubricate your throttle cables and your shift cables on a boat. You can use the same process to lubricate brake cables, or any other type of control cables on motorcycles, ATV's and other machines. If you have a stiff throttle cable or lever, or a stiff shift cable this could be the fix for you.

This product is amazing. My cables were do bad I couldn't even plane out. A mechanic lubricated the cables and it helped a little, but I was resigned to replacing the control box and cables, because you can't get inside my control box without cutting holes in the boat. I used this once then worked the trottle a few times, then used it again. Now my cables are smoothe as silk... They've never worked better.

That's awesome to hear! I love to hear people getting things fixed like this. The other thing the lubricant does other than "lubricate" is keep water out so they don't corrode. So even with new-ish cables it is nice to lubricate them so that you help them stay working well and keep water out of the sleeves.

The easy way without having to buy anything: Find a piece of hose that just fits over the outer jacket of the cable and secure it with a hose clamp. Fill it up with lube of your choice then blow it thru the cable using compressed air and a rubber tipped blow-gun. Rinse/repeat until you see lube coming out the other end on long runs. Works a treat and it costs next to nothing.

What a great idea! I gotta give that a try next time

Instead of using that spray, do you think using marine grease would work better and remain longer
@NKPGarage
@NKPGarage Месяц назад
@Anomous2024 I guess if you would pressurize it somehow so that it squeezes into the cable sleeving it would work.

Was looking for a way to lube the cables without removing the throttle control and this answered my question, thanks for posting!

My throttle control has been an absolute nightmare lately ('93 Whaler Rage Jet). Im definitely going to give this a shot. I looked the lube coupler up on Amazon and based on the reviews, it appears every review under 3 stars should have watched your video first (lol) as they all complain about spray back. Either way, a little mess is far preferred to ripping the control off my center console! GREAT video and just the (right) amount of length. For some of us that do not do this every single day, the nuances that some would edit out can be more helpful than the product itself.... Anyways, THANKS for posting this and here goes nothing....!

@NKPGarage I certainly will! I have an old school boat mechanic as a friend that told me to use this archaic method for doing this... ...I think this way makes a lot more sense... Thanks again!

Absolute life saver thank you I’m going to try this - did removing the locknut throw anything off? Would have loved to see you put it back k together and follow up with it working as well.
@NKPGarage
@NKPGarage 2 года назад
As long as you put the locknut back in the same position you're good to go. If you change the position of the locknut you may need to readjust to get everything lined back up correctly. I'm actually about to oil up my steering control cable this weekend since it has become a bit tight

Great video! Thank you. Would you say a squirt per foot of cable is about right? I have 22' cables on my boat.
@NKPGarage
@NKPGarage 2 года назад
I think it varies from one control cable to the next depending on a lot of things. But for a typical boat control cable I make it a habit of doing this once a year and putting 4-5 squirts at each accessible end of the cable.

Do you need to move the throttle lever back and forth as you spray in ?? Will that differ??
@NKPGarage
@NKPGarage Год назад
The way I did it is to lubricate it first with the tool. Then move the throttle back and forth from end to end a few times, then lubricate once more. Not sure if that's the best way to do it or if there is a better way, that's just my method.

I would like to see the shift cable lubrication as well. Do you have to remove the lower end unit? Also, if you wanted to could you remove the shifter/panel from by the driver's seat and push the lube into the cables from there?
@NKPGarage
@NKPGarage 2 года назад
It depends on the motor/outdrive setup. With some of them getting to the cable ends is easier at one end versus the other. When I lubricate them this season I'll take a more in depth video with using various methods as you mentioned and post it. I think that'd be a useful video and even a good experiment for me.

You can also pull it off and slide a funnel over it and tape the buttom of the funnel to seal the excess space. Pour lube into it. Dont nees to buy extra special thingamajig lube accessory like this
@NKPGarage

That's a great method too
@barddzen

Well, it is a great method IF you can get proper access to the cables and then let gravity do the work or somehow force the lube into the sheathing. In my case, I can’t some of the screws are seized (older boat) and I’ve been looking for another method.
@NKPGarage
@NKPGarage Год назад
@DY-gz5cq if they’re that bad that the hardware is seized up it may be time to replace the cables.

Good video, but it is so much easier when you remove the dust cover off the end of the shift.throttle cable. That black rubber boot is meant to keep lube in and dust out. Just a little trick tip.

my biggest issue was getting the straw into that little plunger. It didnt seem to take much lube without it spitting out in that same location so not sure how much I got in the cable. I think I'd rather just replace the cable than spend $30 on this device and lube
@NKPGarage
@NKPGarage 5 месяцев назад
Replacing the cable is definitely the better option if your cable is in bad shape. But lubricating your even new cables every season will help them last longer and keeping moisture and dirt out.

Good video, although painful to watch. I’m sorry to be critical, but you could’ve said all that in less than five minutes. To simplistic. Reminds me of Kamala Harris. I think most people know how to take a cotter pin off. Good job though, and thank you.
