James Kalm slips in for a Thursday night opening of the renowned Belgian painters Luc Tuymans. With this latest group of works, Tuymans is exploring the corporate myth that is Disney and its concomitant cultural hegemony. With his low-keyed color, wane execution, and focus of obscure tangential subjects, Tuymans presents a vision apparently numbed by an overstimulation of visual saturation. These paintings track "the transformation of entertainment into ideology" in which "an uneasy sense of nostalgia pervades."

Congratulations. What a great show! Mr. Tuymans is always on top. Is surprising to see such an ambitious scale, in this wonderful painter. This show reveals a surprising epical dimension on Tuymans very important work.

The 3 generations: Richter - Tuymans - Sasnal! Thanks mr. Kalm. This channel is great!

Mr.Wow, I still have my reservations regarding the "quality" of Tuymans painting. If his status as a major influence that lots of young painters are coping is a fact, then it should make it easy for tough painters to distinguish themselves. His interest for me is why and how he achieved the amount of recognition he has, astounding. (I liked his earlier work, more paint)

Ron, I don't want to be unkind to Claudia, I had some comments from others that didn't make the final cut, but I think Claudia exemplifies a sizable segment of the scene. I like a critic who" likes what everybody else likes." Insightful.

James, have you seen any of Tuyman's wife's work? Carla Arocha? Amazing artist. Originally from Venezuela, in Belgium now. Spent time in Chicago at the AI.

The Richter reference makes sense but I think bigger is not always better and he has yet to show anything of Richter's verve, except for the "Wonderland" piece that reminded me of the entrance to the "it's a small world" ride at Disneyworld. I saw his work at the Whitney Bienniale and I have to say that although a good piece, it kept my attention for about thirty seconds.

spawn, Wow, what a compliment (being a Johns biographer), that shows the power of the internet (to distort perceptions of social status and relevance). I'm lucky if they'd let me buy a book on Johns let alone write one. As was stated at Art World Salon blog, my "grace" is with the "lesser talents, bottom-feeders and psychopaths," seeing as how they make up 95% of the scene I've got lots of material to work with. PS I'd rather be painting.

Hey plocqa, These are pretty dry surfaces. I reviewed his last show about two years ago (check the Brooklyn Rail archives) and said that there's a sense that feeling anything towards these works would be disregarding what I think is their whole purpose, numbness and ennui.

"Belgians certainly have a good taste in linen". That's a good one...OK, I'll abandon "Tooaimuns", and watch my favourite Kalm videos again: Golub, Guston, Martin Ramirez...

Well..I do make an effort to remain open to the likes of Luc Tuymans, Marlene Dumas and others who are practically worshipped these days. "Their whole purpose numbness and ennui ". I agree with your description. And in defence of poor Loretta - I sense she was politely dodging the issue of her real response to the work. No crackpot. Refreshingly just benignly eccentric which used to be more welcome in this robotic world.

As a painter with a serious art education, I figured I'd give my two cents. I think Tuymans is one of the most interesting "painters" out there; interesting because he believes painting is dead. He paints from odd and unusual sources and transforms his imagery into banality. There is something very nihilistic about this process (how can one guy create so many drab paintings?). However, this is his intention and, in their way, they're quite successful. Oh, and koenbp sounds like an idiot.

Hi James. Just discovered this video on one of the most apalling artists of our century. Absolutely dreadful. On a par with Marlene Dumas. Emptiness raised to the status of art: no color, no drawing, bad execution. OK, enough Tuymans-bashing for tonight. Makes me want to sleep...
