Yes! I fell in love with this guy after seeing CMBYN and then ravenously watched every one of his interviews and Q and A's I could find. I'm about to watch his other two films from his "desire trilogy", and I also can't wait for his take on Suspiria.
Wow that's soo awesome! Yeah he's such a fascinating guy! You should definitely check out his other movies - and me too, I'm excited for Suspiria! :) I'm hoping he gets an Oscar nom this year - he really deserves one!!
I recently saw "I am love" before I saw "Call Me By Your Name" Completely agree with everything you stated. His films have this tactile quality to it. It doesn't have this pristine gloss over it and instead goes for the raw, grainy and impressionistic feel to its aesthetic. Reminds me of Éric Rohmer too. Great video!
Yeah exactly - there’s something very much impressionistic in his films! And of course, I love the old school grainy film look - how can you not? Hahaha thanks Diana :) have a good week!
This is such a beautiful essay. He was one of my favourites directors before CMBYN and now he is number 1. The way he speaks about cinema is so inspiring and passionate - I've never heard someone like him, so I'm glad you're making an essay about him and hope that there will be more.
This is a really unique and well done documentary to attribute his work; Luca seems like such an interesting person and film maker. I’ve yet to actually see any of his movies, but you’ve definitely convinced me to now.
Thanks Megan! Always appreciate your encouraging words! Also, I am really happy that this video got you interested in this fine director’s work - it means I did my job well :) Hope you have a good Sunday!
Great video! I just watched "Call me by your name" and it truly is an impactful picture. Of course as a gay man I can relate to it easily and it brought up a lot of emotions, but it's more than just a "gay movie". I haven't seen other films by him, but I think I might have to check them out. You get so much more out of movies like this, because they don't rely on unspoken rules of hollywood, i guess. Even though there are exceptions of course. I like this series of yours. I hope people appreciate the effort that goes into it 👍🏻
Thank you Pascal! :) I agree with everything you said! I definitely think CMBYN goes beyond a genre - it's not purely a love story, it's about compassion, understanding others, acceptance of others, acceptance of oneself, and making the most of what's in front of you, because that might just be temporary! To be honest, I was quite blown away by the movie and I think it's important to make movies like these that have such important messages without having to preach! Well, anyways, thank you so much for you comment and support, I hope all is well on your side! :) Have a great week!
mikeinthemiddle BTW: i don‘t think that describing his movies as „postcards“ needs to be insulting. A postcard does‘t only have the glossy picturesque front side, but also an individual and personal backside with personal stories and emotions by people that spend a limited amount of time in these places. So the word „postcard“ isn’t necessarily as superficial as it seems. Just a thought 😊
I agree with you, postcards are not necessarily an insult to the director's work, I mean postcards share memories, stories, beautiful sceneries and so on. But I do think in the context of what some of those critics were saying, it was more of a critique than a compliment. They kind of made the point that his movies are merely touristic ads for locations in europe because of how they look and how slow moving some of his movies are, which is kind of limiting the director's meticulous work. However, the way you put it, I can definitely see how that term could be used as something very positive and I totally agree with you! :) Thanks for your input!
Oh awesome - it's really a captivating and moving film! Unfortunately for me, I've only seen it once at a premiere! But yes, I am also looking forward to his take on "Suspiria"! :)
Call Me By Your Name is such a remarkable picture and, take it from me, benefits from repeat viewings since innumerable small details - a glance, a gesture - seem to enrich it further
Oh for sure! That was one of the points I made about Luca's films - there's such an attention to detail! So, I'm sure I'll discover more things as I rewatch it!
Hi Mike! Great insights into the work of Luca. Agree with everything you have mentioned although have seen only CMBYN... will watch the others soon. This man does touch ur senses...like no other.. And as for u ...have become a subscriber! Cheers!
Thank you so much! That’s so nice of you to say! Indeed, Luca Guadagnino is such a unique director and I’m excited for his future projects! Thanks for joining this little community :)
His movies have that sense of sensuality it's amazing and also so immersive..... I have seen suspiria and I loved ittt.. I have seen I am love and cmbyn.. Even though suspiria is a horror movie I still felt that it was so sensual yet bloody and creepy it's beautiful ❤️❤️ too bad the academy snubbed it..
