Why of all the words in Dutch did Benowt (sp) get transmitted? Mexicans who dont know Spanish only know tio, tia, abuelo and food names. That makes sense. What does it say about Dutch people that we only kept a word for melancholy.

Egyptology is nice. I have studied hieroglyphic language and Coptic. Rise and Fall of Ancient Egypt by Wilkinson is a good recent survey. The Complete Egyptian by Bussmann is a popular introduction to the language.

Europeans are naturally polylingual. Dutch, English, Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese is great.

I live over there, and the only Europeans who are consistently polylingual come from countries with small languages. The picture Americans over the internet get of Europeans is that they all are great at English, but it’s usually only the Dutch and Nordics and a handful of other small countries that are really polylingual. Spaniards, French, Italians, Germans, Russians, etc are usually just as bad at other languages as Americans.
