Filmed on a bitter cold day with only one hand to steady myself.
The Isle Of Wight Council have a sign at the top of this path that says...
Public Footpath SS3
Luccombe Chine
CLOSED
Due to land movement and unsafe conditions.
The only difference to this path in at least 5 years, (since at least 2008) is that the section meeting the beach is a little worse.
The Isle Of Wight Council have been claiming on notice signs every year since then, that the path is due to be worked on.
April 2013 & that message has gone.
In the short space of time I was there on a very cold day, I met 7 people who came down the path to take a look, (Two going down to the beach).
Luccombe Chine is a place of great natural beauty and the sooner the steps and footpath are fixed / replaced, the sooner people will be able to enjoy and use them more safely.
If only / Council / Ramblers / Anybody... could get this sorted..
It's such a shame that it's just left in the state it's in........................
(Re-Visited in April 2015. Please use link...)

Such a shame the council have left that path to rot. I used to like to walk along the top from Shanklin, down that path to the beach, then back to Shanklin along the beach. (would be thirsty by then, so a good excuse to stop at the Fisherman's Cottage for a nice pint of 'Burt's'. Lol, that will tell you how long ago that was! Sadly the council have also let the steps go to ruin at Whale Chine also, have not been down to Chale beach for a few years now, last time i went you had to use rope to get down the last section of steps, then scrabble down the last bit at the bottom. Will be back down the island this summer, hate to think how bad the Whale Chine steps will be now.

Went down the steps last Friday with 2 friends. It was quite hairy but even as an unfit 53 year old I just made it. Needed to use a rope at the bottom. Someone had kindly left one and I extended it with one of my own which is still there. Had a fantastic swim on the beach at the bottom then walked on to Shanklin and back along the coastal path.

Thanks for posting this, very interesting to see. With regards to opening the path the IOW Council have been relying on "Temporary Closure" orders on the path for years which makes it illegal to use and to avoid having to repair it. These last for one year and have to be approved by the Department for Transport but they keep granting extensions (hence the changing dates). The IOW council have made it clear they have NO intention of repairing the path which is a real shame.

I walked along from Shanklin and went up again too a few weeks back. Overgrown is an understatement.. :-) Wouldn't fancy going down with one hand now....

We actually returned to film there a couple of weeks back, your right its really overgrown now was a nightmare dragging all our filming equipment up from the beach. The steps collapsed over the waterfall are well and truly rotting away having to hang from them with my camera gear was a challenge to say the least. Such a shame that it looks set to become another forgotten treasure In addition the search for the cave continues… Could I ask another clue…? East or west from St Catherines???

Thanks for putting this up /surely it could all be reinstated ?? with the will / last time i was at Shepherds Chine it was similar to this / many other examples on the Island like this / will there be any hope of Lottery funding to re-instate this or will it be the trend to abandon all hope of re-instatement ???

I returned yesterday. It's beautifully overgrown & green, I don't think going down one handed (with the other holding a camera) over the waterfall would be so easy now...

I've looked down into Whale chine from above, and it looks reasonably clear and easy in comparison. (or did last summer.) I'll have to take another look some when.. :-)

Hi. I'm massively doubtful that this has been sorted out.. There have been some very bad landslips on the Island recently due to all the rain, (some causing roads to go & people to have to vacate their homes.) If anything, these chine steps are probably in an even worse state.. I'll have to pop back and take another look.. Plenty of beautiful walks left though.. Depends where you're staying.. Hope you enjoy your holiday..

I was exploring around this area Sunday, was gutted to find that the steps had broken all over the waterfall. We were planning on using it in a upcoming film such a shame. Off subject but I’ve been frantically trying to find the “Skull & Crossbones” cave. I know you wouldn’t divulge its location but would you be willing to say if I’m searching the right side of Ventnor or not?

Wight Way Hi. Thx for your comments.I've used a selection camera's over the years, but this one was with my old Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX20V compact camera, no longer available and a few newer replacement models have been out since. I still have it but it's seen it's best days..

Tis a shame indeed. As for the cave.. You're right in that you need to head westwards. :-) You'll need the patience of saints to find it though.. best wishes, and good luck with your filming.
