SOME COMMENTS ARE CRITICAL OF THE FAST TEMPO AND PIANO ACCOMPANIMENT. YOU MUST REALIZE THIS IS A RECITAL. PAV IS A SHOWMAN . HE IS SINGING THESE BEAUTIFUL PIECES, CONSECUTIVELY KEEPING THE AUDIENCE PLEASED AND EXCITED. HE DOES NOT WANT TO BELABOR A PIECE. THATS PAYING ATTENTION TO HIS AUDIENCE .HIS VOICE SOUNDS GREAT HOWEVER, HE SINGS AS IF HE IS HAVING A WONDERFUL TIME,SHARING HIS TALENT. IAN KAYE

He says "ma che dal labbro tuo", which means "but May from your Lip". I don't know the reason of this change!

Gorgeous. Simply sublime. Yes, he's a bit free with the notation, but I, for one, will forgive him for that. R.I.P. tenorissimo.

Free with notation?..Read, Totally distorts the music. How did the poor pianist even manage to re-arrange the score at the last minute? It's a travesty to cut the ending, an integral part of the dénouement...a circus performance

Pavarotti at his Worst. Music Totally distorted from the notation, no nuance, self indulgent...sure he has a Great B flat at the end but it's a song and a great poem for God's sake.

Peccato che l’autore aveva previsto una bella coda pianistica che è invece e’ stata usata qui come introduzione arbitraria in modo da far finire il brano con l’acuto (non scritto) del cantante.

I don't get why his tempo is so off for this particular piece, every time I've heard him sing it the tempo is just all over the place and that never seems to be an issue for anything else he did
@deadtenorssociety2973
@deadtenorssociety2973 8 лет назад
+GiantSandles He does seem to take a rather free form approach to the rhythm, doesn't he?
@huinyung3622

Tempo had always been a great problem for Pavarotti, no matter for folk songs or opera singing, sometimes way off the sheet. Well, some say it breaks the beauty of original music. But his voice might have conquered everything, people just enjoy listening to him. I would just shut this part of my brain and tell myself, well , this is rubato...
@orlando098
@orlando098 7 лет назад
I don't find anything particularly wrong with it and I've worked on this in singing lessons before. Sounds great to me anyway, maybe I'm not such a stickler about rhythm as you
@GiantSandles
@GiantSandles 7 лет назад
orlando098 Compare it to the Caruso or Bjorling recordings, he seems to prolong a lot of the lines and add in these overly long pauses. It's more of an issue in the first half of the song than the second but it's clearly there
@edwardstroud8245
@edwardstroud8245 7 лет назад
Well, Caruso is at the top of the first division, Bjorling not far behind. Pavarotti, a marvellous singer but second division, so what does one expect :-) And though again, there are some wonderful singers around today, all down in the fourth and fifth division. The golden age is long gone.

Dreadful...the musical notation is so distorted that the song completely falls apart. People will applaud anything evidently if the high note at the end is glorious - as this one is. Just because he has no regard for how the song is written is no excuse for the horrifying pianist to pound like that and completely cut the great ending...although he probably would have destroyed that too.

Dear Dan, although I have played this song in concert with many wonderful singers...Anna Moffo, Richard Tucker, James Hoback etc., unfortunately I am not able to Amaze you with my performance as it was not recorded. Now that I'm retired, you will just have to fantasize about how magnificent it was. Sorry

Magiera sounds terrible, and both of them fail to capture the basic musical idea of the song - being carried away in the beginning. Middle section Pavarotti sounds great, aside from rhythmic carelessness. I would like to hear someone treat this song wroth care and respect - yet ABANDON.
