But there is clear tension in the body language.. She crosses her legs away from him and points her body AWAY from him. Serious issues in their relationship.
The genius of Johnny Carson is that he let his guests take center stage. It wasn't about him, the focus was on the person sitting in that seat. He handled her quips gracefully, and kept the conversation flowing. He was, and remains, the undisputed master of late night. Lucy's banter with him seems based on years of friendship between two comedians. But we're also looking at an aging Lucy - less filters, blunt answers. Still, she is a beloved legend, as is Johnny. Forever in our hearts! ❤
Now, the industry is so different. Lucy was not only an actress, she was the head of her own film studio after Dezi left it to her. She was "The Boss". She didn't stop being The Boss when she came to Johnny's show. She knew the industry better than anyone. She was intelligent, funny, kind, and tough as nails. She had to be.
Desi did not "leave it to her". He asked her to buy him out - at that time the stocks were down and losing money. She bought him out for 2.5 million (fair price for the deal). Several years later the stock value was rising and Paramount bought Desilu for 17 mllion, Lucy netted 10 million. All and all Desi had 20 million at the end of his life and Lucy had 40 million. I think the major difference was that Desi gambled a lot. He left his money to his two children; 250 thousand to his mother, who lived two years beyond him. Lucy's money was divided up between her two children and her husband Gary Morton (married almost 30 years).
Desi did not leave it to her, he was tired of it all and she bought him out. She was, at that time, acting and producing The Lucy Show, as well as being the Head of Desilu Studios.
Desi did not leave it to her - she bought him out - because of his drinking he was not making good decisions and Desilu was losing money. After running it a few years (green lit Mission Impossible and Star Trek) she was able to sell it for 17 million dollars.
If there were only 50 people annointed as the most interesting and popular personality of the last 70 plus years, we ALL know that Lucille Ball would be on that list and perhaps at the very very top ! There were very few personalities who could come close or compete with Lucy, as We all loved Lucy then and now!!!
He had a wonderful talent for letting the guest have the spotlight, and I've seen times where he would jump in and help them out of any awkward moment. It seems that he understood it was a big deal to many people's careers to be on his show and wanted it to be a good memorable experience for them.
Lucille Ball was an incredibly smart and savvy Lady in a male dominated business. She literally carved out a place for herself and made a stunning impact on US showbiz.
Kevin Kelley I worked in an organization of half men and half women for 25 years and I never saw a woman surprised. They had director jobs and pay was equal. The top dog was always a man but that’s because no women applied for that job. Also, if I had to count I had women pinch my ass many times and never saw a man do that. I don’t know what all the fuss is. Maybe it’s different in the USA.
We still love Lucy but WOW, the stories about her being domineering are true! She practically commands the interview! But hey, with as successful a career as she's had in Radio, Film and Television, both as a performer and producer, who can say she was wrong? Not me.
She was truly a legend and absolutely unforgettable. All you have to say is "Lucy" and everyone knows who you're talking about. A lot of people don't know that in addition to being a terrific comedic actress, she was a very savvy businesswoman and progressive female for her generation. There will never be another one like her.
Think Tank Lucille Ball could dance and sing make you laugh and also play serious rolls in movies. Name one Hollywood actor that started out within the last twenty years can make that claim.
Why I Love Lucy...that incredible genuine laugh. She acts all tough then the child comes out and she claps and laughs like a 5 year old. I do love Lucy.💜💜💜
There's nobody that can hold a candle to Johnny Carson he was the epitome of a talk show host there will be nobody like Johnny Carson ever he was so funny in a natural way
I’m so happy you enjoyed her. I’m a huge fan too. I had no idea she took a stand for children who are exploited - wow! I really appreciate that. Lecturing Johnny Carson no less. Her son looked fantastic. Looked clean and sober. That’s impressive in Hollyweird.
Hello👋 i hope you’re safe over there? I pray this year brings prosperity and happiness love 💕all over the world🌍 I’m from Canada currently in Key West Florida and you where are you from if i may ask?
Then, as now, and CEO or high school girl, it's imperative for women of all ages and stations to say out loud, confidently, and without necessarily yelling, simply: "Don't touch me." Or "Don't touch me like that."
I grew up in the 70s and it was a magical time. The world seemed like a safer and warmer place during that period. I long for those days. Best years of my life.
Lucy's strength really comes through her presence in interacting with people, encompassing a razor sharp wit that even stuns the great Johnny Carson. She's earned the respect to be the greatest! Thank you Lucy for allowing us to find laughter even in dark times. We All ❤ Lucy! ⚘ RIP
@Kathryn Molesa I love Lucy & Desi & wished they could have stayed together. If you google, you will see that their son had a child, I think, when he was 15. We will never know what arrangements were made at that time (I was not alive then), but in finding this out recently, I was surprised. They hid it well. That baby daughter grew up to have challenging experiences & is now a mother herself. That young daughter which would be Desi Jr's. granddaughter/Desiree is now being photographed & compared to Lucille Ball as Lucy was a model & iconic beauty. It appears that Desi Jr. at some point got in touch with his daughter. No family is perfect & there are a great deal of things that we never really know about anyone....which is not to say that they are or are not wonderful adults...just that no family is picture perfect or completely wonderful as we are all imperfect. ---------"Daughter at 15 Desi Arnaz Jr. was a problematic boy. His celebrity parents lived their own life, and despite being treated “like a real son” on a TV show, the boy experienced little attention. Music and drugs played an integral part in his teenage life. Under the influence of the trendy dangers and due to the lack of attention, Desi Arnaz Jr. became a father to his daughter, Julia, at 15. He was immediately limited from his girlfriend, and it wasn’t until 1990 when he officially assured via the DNA test that Julia was his daughter." Desi Arnaz Jr. in his own words/interview: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bKOinPRqm6I.html My thoughts: Life is challenging for everyone, but sometimes we all become tooooo self-absorbed. I always wonder why someone who has every opportunity, who never has to worry about money, never has to worry about health insurance or clothes, food, paying bills, paying for college or paying for anything...doesn't help others. Think about helping others & making a difference for others & in turn yourself by helping others. There are so many people who never have financial freedom or security, but also volunteer & make a difference. It seems that many people are their own worst enemy.
@@melissaallen3918 one reason is we have people who literally went to college and have a career for that purpose of helping people. No need for everyone to get involved. It's like to many chiefs and not enough indians. They know where to get help. Every urban city has places to help. People havecto want help, and use the programs to get back independent. Or become independent for the first time in their lives.
@@dadafish1 wow!!! I know a lot of kids in the industry are surrounded by pedophiles so if it happens I wouldn't be surprised.. Look at the joke Johnny Carson made in this clip about getting a ride from desi clearly he made a sexual reference
She was 63 years old here & tough as nails. She comes off as difficult, but I'm sure she had her reasons. RIP Lucille Ball. You brought me so much joy when I was a kid.
@@cathycollins9538 I agree somewhat with you, but she was also a lot older here (grouchy). And she lived through a different era which wasn't too kind to women, especially in the Showbiz industry. I think of her as one of the pioneers of women's rights in Hollywood. She eventually became co-owner of Desilu Productions and was the first woman to head a production studio. The original show "Star Trek" would've never happened if not for her. She fought for it as long as she could afford to. She was a very strong minded person.
I enjoy watching these look back in time. People were more cultured, she is being genuine. Listen to her morality about porn. Johnny isn't taking all over her- there's an actual conversation. Rip Johnny, Ed, and Lucy. Glad I grew up with this show.
No late night bullshit politics it was pure entertainment that people needed right before they went to sleep. Johnny Carson was in National Treasure. He allowed is guests to shine he was decent didn't get involved in anything controversial it was just easy to watch it didn't excite. all the shows late night shows I haven't watched in years especially the last three and a half years. these late night talk show hosts are no longer ent entertainers but are shills of the left
Fallon and Kimmel are the worse!! Omg I can’t stand it. These kids today don’t understand what talent is. Late night used to be great. Funny and no political bias bs.
I love how Lucy is so motherly with him. Making sure he was ok when he came out. You could see for a moment her heart broke thinking he was hurt. She is amazing
She was a tough cookie but she meant well and did a lot of good things sometimes trying to fight the studios to get things done back when women controlling a studio was so difficult.
What an icon. She was hilarious on her show and throughout her career, but everybody in the biz back then knew she was one tough lady who wouldn't be pushed around and worked her ass off of for her success. So much respect for her considering the era.
@@carolludlow3386 Yeah, meant no disrespect..far from it. That era was all old white men who signed women as objects and once they weren't relevant...out they went with a new gal in place without skipping a beat. Lucille Ball not only had talent but the smarts to make a seat for herself at the big table where decisions were made. Such swagger.
Oh I know you didn't mean any disrespect hon when I started writing that reply I didn't think about what you meant by that era then it dawned on me and you're totally right about that era
Desi Arnaz was the force behind Desilu. Lucille Ball was the first to admit she was not a businesswoman. When Desi sold out to her in 1962, she relied on advisors like Herb Solow and Martin Leeds. And she sold the business five years later, to Paramount.
@@jaredjlinden Google, research, read, please. You will learn otherwise. Desi and Lucy made a great business team..yes. But Desi sold all his shares of Desilu to Lucille Ball, making her the owner and head of the studio, while also the star and executive producer of 4 successful Lucy television shows. Desilu Studios also produced many other popular TV shows and films.
Johnny brings up 23 years ago when Lucy started on TV. That would be 1951. Why does 23 years before 1974 seem like a different Universe and time and 23 years ago from today would just be 1997. That seems like six months ago.
@Honky Tonk we went from a constitutional republic, to a Democracy, and eventually to an Oligarchy run by Chek Bolsheviks (Joe Biden is a good example)
@Honky Tonk meanwhile, our constitution remains the same. Never was intended to be a Democracy at all, that’s majority rule. The founders intended the minority to have as many rights as the majority, constitutional republic. The Chek Bolsheviks have managed for 100 years, thanks to FDR and the proceeding Bolsheviks, to infiltrate our institutions, our academia, and our government - essentially brainwashing the majority of people into think that we are a “democracy” thereby forfeiting our God-given rights little by little with each passed piece of unconstitutional legislation both at the federal and state levels.
I thought same thing not that freindly. Shr didnt like porn. But we lost intimacy i guess her way of life won. But her kid got om drugs. So somethin depressed him
Actresses back then (and even still today) had to be tough. Imagine what it was like for Lucy back in her day, as one of few, female, young comediennes. If a man behaved the same way she did in this interview, no one would question it. Complete double-standard.
Hello👋 i hope you’re safe over there? I pray this year brings prosperity and happiness love 💕all over the world🌍 I’m from Canada currently in Key West Florida and you where are you from if i may ask?
Oh puhleeze morals and Hollywood in the same sentence is a laugh 😂 There were some exceptions but back then parenting fails were hidden from the public. It was not the era of Instagram, zoom lens paparazzi shots etc. Hollywood had the mystic of being classy in the 50s but there’s always been a seedy undercurrent.
Back then i do believe some Hollywood parents did have morals or at least spoke on morals and did LB kids do nude scenes none that i can recall. There was a lot of creepy stuff going on anytime when people have power and money. But look at today's Hollywood. You do not hear one really speak of morals. Only virtual signaling. DiCaprio crying about Climate change but look how he leads his life. So yes back then had creeps and sickos but there were a few who did try to instill some values in their kids. We as a people have to strive to do better for ourselves and for our children.
A little - there is an affectation I don't find that appealing a bit like a spoiled entitled person. But I guess having two such famous parents it's hard.
@@LJ-ht4zs What?.. I was speaking of his presence and disposition. The way he nods; brushes his finger against his face, looks around constantly, uses his hands as he talks, and shows a smirky smile when he’s amused with himself -- very much like Desi Sr.
@@LJ-ht4zs His parents were both incredibly intelligent and hard-working people who built their careers up from nothing. They implemented that mindset into their children. Desi Jr. is merely being a goofy young guy.
@@dandelion-honey Yes, I do agree about Desi Arnaz jr having two hard-working intelligent and talented parents and he was talented himself, but early on showed two distinct problems that his father had, chasing the ladies, making a young girl pregnant when they were both 15 (did not go for a DNA test till a lot later, while finally meeting his daughter, don't think that he and his daughter really connected). Also had a serious drug abuse problem. I think it was drugs and alcohol. Identifications with his father's issues. Fortunately his parents stood by and supported him while he was in rehab and do believe that he is totally okay now - but either 69 or 70. Seems he stays out of the limelight but works for the New Life Foundation that he feels saved his life. Both his wife and one of his granddaughters died. Rough times, but fortunately he is doing ok.
@@carmenfernandez5234 Actually, Michael Tell was found to be Sean Astin's father. Patty was dating Desi Jr. and Michael Tell, a writer, at the same time and wasn't sure who the father was, but it was later determined that Michael is Sean's father.
Lucy and Bette Davis were the hardest working women of their times who rose above The Hollywood Men's Club and put them in their place with their pure talent, dedication, and perseverance towards generating high quality entertainment in each of their genres. They both will always be remembered forever.

I love the funny story at the end, where Jr. found Johnny on the side of the road with a flat tire and gave him a ride home. Imagine helping someone and it is Johnny Carson, and you tell Johnny I am Lucille Ball's son, get in!
Love when she was talking about exploitation in show business: "They'd rather work than be an unemployed actor. I'd rather be an unemployed gas employee" so smart and classy. Rarity nowadays.
Many people don't remember that Desilu, la production company started by Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, her husband back then, produced series like "The Untouchables, Mission Impossible, and Star Trek. Also Desi Arnaz started the tecnique of filming sitcoms with 3 cameras on a sound stage in front of live audiences. The filming permitted the beginning of what we know as reruns, allowing Desilu Studios a hefty profit. So Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz were not only successful sitcom actors, but were two of the most important developers of modern television. And who didn´t grow up watching reruns of "I Love Lucy"? It was an unforgetable part of my childhood. Great lady.

Erwin Monti absolutely!! There’s only one Lucille Ball n girls I think would do well to be even a fraction of the woman she was both professionally n personally
I liked when she told Johnny Carson - "Dont touch me"! She certainly was no ass-kisser like most of his guests were. Her whole demeanor is of someone who knows who she is.
She was a true lady of class, and a great example for others. It's too bad that people of today, in show business or otherwise aren't like that anymore.
I lived in her old neighborhood in West Hollywood. Her house was right around the corner from me and George Peppard's house was right across the street and so was Alan Hale Jr's house. Can't imagine if I lived there all the same time they all lived there, it would have been mind blowing! I was told by my neighbors that their parents lived in my neighborhood in it's hey day and that Lucille was a great neighbor and would trade her fruit from her trees with other neighbors different fruit trees!
