STUNNING VIEWS FROM THE AIR OF LUDLOW CASTLE HISTORY
Ludlow Castle is a medieval fortification in Shropshire, England, overlooking the River Teme. Likely founded by Walter de Lacy after the Norman conquest, it was one of England's first stone castles. During the 12th century civil war, it changed hands between the de Lacys and rivals and was fortified with a Great Tower and outer bailey. In the mid-13th century, Geoffrey de Geneville inherited and rebuilt parts of it, and it played a role in the Second Barons' War. Roger Mortimer extended it in 1301, and Richard, Duke of York, inherited it in 1425, making it a Yorkist stronghold during the Wars of the Roses.
Edward IV owned it after 1461, and it became the Council of Wales and the Marches' seat, undergoing extensive 16th-century renovations. In the 17th century, it hosted cultural events but suffered during the English Civil War, being taken by Parliamentarians in 1646. The contents of the castle were sold off and a garrison was retained there for much of the interregnum that began with the execution of Charles I in January 1649 and ended in May 1660 when Charles II was restored to the thrones of the three realms. Ludlow never recovered from the civil war years and when the council was finally abolished in 1689 it had become a virtual ruin.
Henry, 1st Earl of Powis, leased and landscaped it in 1772, and Edward, 1st Earl of Powis, bought it in 1811. A mansion was constructed in the outer bailey but the remainder of the castle was left largely untouched.
After 1900, Ludlow Castle was cleared of undergrowth and over the course of the century it was extensively repaired by the Powis Estate and government bodies.
Soon after the castle became a tourist attraction and continued to undergo repairs over the 20th century. The castle covers almost 5 acres with notable structures like the Great Tower and a rare circular chapel.
With its rich history and architectural blend, the castle stands as a testament to England's medieval past and its evolution through the centuries. Today, it remains a significant tourist attraction, preserved and maintained by the Powis Estate, and offers a glimpse into the historical and cultural legacy of the region.
