STUNNING VIEWS FROM THE AIR OF MALTA PARISH CHURCH OF MELLIEHA
The Parish Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is a Roman Catholic church located in Mellieħa, Malta. The church is situated on an elevated area in the village, providing stunning views of the surrounding landscape and the Mediterranean Sea.
Dedicated to the Nativity of Mary, its construction spanned from 1881 to 1898, with the dome and bell towers added later.
Mellieħa's parish was originally established in the 15th century or earlier. However, due to frequent attacks by Barbary pirates, the village was abandoned, and its parish status was lost.
Despite this, the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Mellieħa remained a significant shrine and after the corsair threat had diminished, the village began to prosper and grow again, and the parish was eventually re-established in 1844.
The construction of the current parish church began in 1881, with the first stone blessed on September 5, 1883. Limestone for the building was sourced from a nearby quarry, with the local community assisting in the transportation of materials. The church was finally blessed on September 5, 1897, and construction was completed the following year.
The addition of the bell towers and dome commenced in 1920 and although it was consecrated on February 18, 1930, it wasn’t fully completed until 1940 after which its five bells that were sourced from Milan, no doubt rung out in celebration.
The church exhibits Baroque elements, and while its architecture has been somewhat harshly described as unremarkable it is visible from miles away with it’s two bell towers and colourful dome creating a striking landmark in the Mellieħa skyline.
