That would be better with 10" tom, just my preference & maybe a cymbal mount on the kick, for more compact options.

amazing sound but the tom being mounted into the bass drum is a deal breaker - why did Ludwig compromise both the look and sound of a perfectly nice bass drum by cutting a giant hole into it and mounting things? Are they trying to be like Gretsch? Can't one of these two do this right?

It is an option on the order form. Shell pack doesn’t come that way unless ordered by the customer or dealer.

First off, Ludwig has done this for years, and was standard on all kits, unless custom ordered otherwise. As a drummer and drum tech, i can safely say that a tom mounted on the bass drum makes about as much difference in tone or resonance as a directly mounted tom bracket on a tom, or on a snare stand, or with a rims system. The difference is miniscule. But don't take my word for it. Watch drummer Carter McLean and his videos on his channel, and you'll see how wonderfully resonant his drums sound, with all these aforementioned options.
