...my old revered teacher Josef Veleba partially executing this on his calamitous Vienna Horn; what a hero!

Mml Jaguar Indeed in fact executing it wholly on a Vienna Horn with an A crook. :-)

...I am not sure; partly it seems to be the single high-f by Zischeck, he used off and on, also in a perfect manor... How ever; impressive, considering they had only Instruments fraught with problems available at this time.

Could be, he was so proud of the recording he made me stand and listen to it all the way through in his Klassenzimmer whilst puffing cigarette smoke into the atmosphere. That was 1976, what year were you there?

1970-1975, then I changed to our Friend and my father's kollegue Robert Freund and to ...Doublehorn...

This reminds me of Schubert for some reason, thought the two composers had very different styles. Their lives obviously overlapped.

Obviously this octet derives from Schubert's one, which is not in my mind his best chamber music, even if it is the longest one. Ths is perhaps the reason of my opinion: in spite of his genius, and the string/wind wide contrast, about one hour is definitely too long for a chamber work with a limited number of insytruments, which offer less color variation than the usual orchestra. Spohr's is shorter and mixes a Schubert-like expressivity with some kindof nervosity which directly comes from Weber. Reusing the theme of Haendrl's variatons for harpsichord by composing his own variations duited to the instrument set is a perfectly met challenge.
