What I love is that Luffy knows nothing about Nami’s past. He walked away when Nojiko told the rest of the crew. All he saw was his friend cry, and that’s all the reason he needed to punch a fish.

Can we just appreciate Nami voice actor, such a pure emotion and despair on display,insane how it match perfectly this epic scene.

This scene changed everything for me. I became a huge One Piece fan after this.

I love how Luffy never cares about a person's past. Once he makes a friend, that's it. He will fight to the death to protect them, to give them happiness. That's the kind of person I strive to be.

It's these moments like this that proves Luffy is a DEFINITIVE Captain. He didn't NEED to know what was going on the past eight years. All he needed was Nami to give that cry for help, and dude went straight on for the mission. This is why he's my favorite MC.

Still the most powerful scene in One Piece to me. I can't recall seeing another character hit rock bottom as hard as Nami did here. The pure rage of hating Arlong so much that she could, without hesitation, stab herself over and over. It's such a breathtaking moment.

I love the symbolism with the hat being Luffy’s treasure. Nami’s treasure is her town and the people in it, and she is entrusting her biggest treasure to Luffy. Luffy then trusts her to take care of his treasure, the same way Nami is trusting him.

Almost everyone thinks Luffy is stupid but he possesses very high emotional intelligence like in this case where even though Namy was telling him to leave, he didn't because he knew that's not what she really wanted. Luffy's intelligence is often underestimated.

In the live action I love how Iñaki can go from so bright and joyful to serious, watching the boys say “right” as they follow him without question is so accurate, they’ve really done an amazing job.

STILL the only person Luffy's voluntarily given his hat to. More than once, too.

Definitely my favorite scene.. the way he stops her from hurting herself, stays with her even though she's pushing him away, and waits for her to ask for help... then the cut scene to the squad waiting on stand by was so bad ass... this was when I realized One Piece was lit.

Just watched the live-action version of this scene, and I'm stunned how it's almost shot-for-shot identical.

Nami's voice actor did a really good job with this scene; you could really hear how pained she sounded

Probably the first fucking badass scene on this series, love how Zoro just sat there with his sword, Sanji with his cigarette, and even Usopp looks cool here. At this moment, we all knew Arlong were going to get fucked

This scene is just perfection. Everything in this arc leads perfectly to this moment, all of Nami's frustration and heartache, her pain and sorrow. The show really captured that absolutely encapsulating feeling of hopelessness and anger at your own inability to do anything in a situation you have tried so hard to fix. Culminating into Nami physically harming herself due to her frustration and hatred of herself. When she asks for help, it is full of complete and utter exhaustion on her part, which only makes it 1000% times more satisfying when Luffy says he'll help her, that she's not alone and doesn't have to bear all that pressure and weight by herself, that, of course, her friends will help her. An absolutely brilliant scene, and the one that really got me hooked on these characters.

I feel like this is the first scene we see Luffy acting as a captain and giving orders. This makes the scene hit even harder since we see him being serious for the first time and his crew agrees without even a pinch of hesitation

I honestly believe that if Nami's voice actress hadn't been so fucking PERFECT here, One Piece wouldn't be the phenomenon it is today. This scene is why like...90% of fans kept watching. Seriously. THis made me a lifer, commenting on YT vids of it 10+ years later.

Luffy, "We're going!" The crew, "Right!" I. LOVE. THIS. When your captain say's "were going" you don't ask why, you ask where. You just do. The loyalty and respect the crew members have for their captain.

I had already grown to love One Piece before this point, but this is definitely the scene that sold me on it completely.

I love how patiently Luffy waits for her permission to act. He could bring this whole place down around their ears but won’t do it unless Nami acknowledges she wants or needs his help. “Let me off the chain, Nami! This dog’s gotta hunt!”

I didn't knew nothing about one piece since the live action. I wasn't emotionally involved with the characters neither the story. But since this scene hit the screen I knew how powerfull it was, I felt deep in my heart the essence of the One Piece saga. I'm completelly in love

This hits different when you realized the fact that Luffy doesnt judge someone based on their tragic past to help them, if u want help just say it in front of his face, and knowing that nami's story during arlong park arc was indeed tragic and her backstory, and Luffy refuses to listen to these things if u are his FRIEND just say u want help cuz he wont hesitate to risk his life to save you.

My god I haven’t seen the One Piece anime but saw the Netflix adaptation and holy mother they really did justice to not only this scene but the whole story also. Can’t say the same for Netflix Avatar.

This scene in the anime truly defined Luffy as a character as well as the fight that followed. I almost didnt get into One Piece because Luffy was so annoying to me. Hes loud, idiotic, selfish, always demanding, and completely out of the loop. But this made my jaw drop when I saw this. He knows all that about himself. He knows that hes a child both physically and mentally. He knows that he cannot be known for being super smart like Nami or as skilled as Sanji or Zoro. And he accepts that. He cant use a sword, he can't navigate, he can't shoot a slingshot or cannon, he cant cook. On his own, hes useless. All he can do is fight, and he will do a damn good job doing it too. Its amazing to see that he divides the crew to certain job titles despite them all being able to fight, because in the end they are his family. They help him with absolutely everything, so when the time comes that they're emotionally ruined and in need of a hand, he'll place that hat on their head and help them with their problems.

This was the scene. I've always remembered this scene, because this was when I knew what One Piece was going to be for me. Still, IMHO, not just one of the best scenes in One Piece, but one of the best scenes in all of anime.

Nami is incredibly important to Luffy. Without her, he could never accomplish his dream. That's why i think that he's declaring two things by giving Nami his hat. Entrusting her with his treasure, and declaring that Nami is his treasure.

Just watched the same scene in the live action adaptation and I need to say that the anime version just hits different. The emotion just pours from Nami and Luffy, the music hits just the right notes, damn. The netflix version is not necessarily bad, but it's not as good as this.

All this time and this is still my personal favorite moment in the series.

Damn, I got the chills when Nami remembered Luffy saying on his hat: "Don't touch my treasure!" Its like he's saying: "You are my treasure" to Nami. That was the first thing I thought of when she remembered it.

Luffy help me. All you had to do was ask.

Whenever i think of my top moments in anime I always think of this scene 1st thing. This scene right here is what showed people what One piece is really all about. I love watching this scene over and over because it really is amazing. I am so truly thankful this story was created. Thank You Oda

Whose rewatching this after seeing the live action adaption?!?! Live action cannot compare but it was a worthy adaption. Mine only gripe is I really wish they didn’t allow luffy to hear Nojiko’s telling of their past in the live action

lol the scene of luffy giving Nami his treasure, yelling and the back up shot of the boys with zoro, usopp just sitting back and sanji standing in a cool pose - all prepared for whats to come - waiting for the "lets go" from their leader luffy - amazing scene. Much better than any Hollywood movie - the build was really good.

of all the four guys, Luffy really is the one who really didn't know her story... and who's the one who immediately stormed the enemy in an instant when she cried for help? there's really a great lesson here about friendship

It broke my heart when Nami's having a break down and keeps hurting herself. It reminds me of myself. And when Luffy put his hat on her I just suddenly burst into tears. There's just so much overwhelming emotion in that scene.

Not gonna lie, the scene where Luffy defeated Arlong and shouted “Nami, you’re my friend!” was very special to me! I was bawling my eyes out 😭

This scene. This scene is where the series goes from being a great series to my favourite fictional story to be created by humanity. The beauty of the emotions and the feelings that are displayed beat even the ones of Enies Lobby. I mean can you even see how it works without music to send in the feelings? No scene in One Piece matches for me the beauty of this one

Man I love this scene.. If you look back at nami at the beginning and the nami now there is such a big difference and development.. This nami was basically suicidal.. She had nothing to live for but the village, she couldn't trust anyone and she lived in fear of others.. If the village really had gone and died nami would've most likely killed herself.

Don't know why but I love luffy's face as he just watches her do it. 0:40 Its almost like he didn't know how to react because hes probably never seen a person commit self harm, but hes aware that its not right.

Just like everyone else, this showed me how serious this show can be and it really got me hooked.

This scene was the exact moment I knew One Piece was something special. Recently I started calling it the greatest show on earth.

Luffy placing his hat on her head is just great, it’s his way of saying you are important to me and I will protect you. And the damn right scream afterwords just sends chills down my spine. As if to him it’s a given that he will protect her.

I'm reading One Piece for the first time and I came here after I read this chapter. My favourite chapter in One Piece so far (definitely one of the best even I'm done catching up), Nami asking for help and Luffy giving her his hat my favourite page.
