AFAIK The color is a representation that Luffy is using Armament Haki, pre-timeskip OP didn't have a way to let the reader and spectator know a Haki user is using it in battle or in any moment

fun fact: the area of the ocean the strawhats are in is called the hadal zone IRL. its the deepest part of the ocean where the pressure is high enough to kill a human in seconds, very little food, in terms of smaller sea creatures and planet, can be found, and is completely black due to sunlight being unable to reach down that deep, so everything is covered in permanent darkness. the depth, lack of sunlight and low levels of nurtition are the reasons many scientists believe that ocean animal evolved to be so damn larger than normal. (key example: the colossal squid). the term "hadal" was a reference to hades, the greek realm of the dead. and the scariest part? we know next to nothing about the hadal zone. since it's so dark and deep, very few manned missions have actually gone down there. 2 of the most notable expeditions were: 1) in 1960, jacques piccard and don walsh dove down to challenger deep, the deepest known point in the ocean, in the submersable "trieste". it took them about 4 hours to get that far down and they only stayed for 20 minutes before having to come back up because one of the windows cracked. 2) in 2012, james cameron, (yes. that james cameron) made a solo dive to challenger deep and spent over 3 hours exploring the area and discovering new species of sea creatures. while he didn't go as deep as piccard and walsh, he still holds the world record for the deepest dive done solo.

There are 3 types of haki Armament haki Observation haki Conquer haki

This is never explained in the anime, but haki is supposed to be invisible. Oda added it only to avoid confusion on the readers and viewers. It is not like everyone sees your fists becoming black armored.

Haki getting a new look with Armament is a nice way to avoid confusion. It also kind of puts the readers and the Straw Hats in the same situation: we're aware of this concept now, and it can be determined what's going on. Before, they and we were unable to really do anything other than guess at why mysterious things were happening. "It's Haki" was usually the answer but it's like Luffy saying "oh, so it's a mystery ____" whenever Nami was explaining something he didn't really understand. Robin though is able to communicate those sorts of things to Luffy somehow, and I love it every time it happens :)

Armament supposed to be invisible, but they have to make it black so viewers can see it. Yeah right, that's just a lame excuse from oda. Same thing with how stupid ace died, oda tried to justify his stupid death by making a backstory about it. Haki is just a giant plot hole. If it wasn't, surely in the turn based arc aka marine ford, the big guns would use the haki left and right.

the pacing gonna go way downhill starting with this arc, you might wanna switch to one pace
