In this video, we do a demonstration of a measurement method for luggage. The purpose of this method or system is to get repeatable accurate measurements no matter who or where the luggage is measured in as simple and straightforward, but correct(!!!) way as possible. Please let me know if you have any questions.

For the red suitcase: 76.5+54+32=162.5 > 157 or 158 cm of most airlines. It means almost certain extra fees.
@jameskrueger6282
@jameskrueger6282 2 года назад
Yes, they usually have a stated standard of something like 158cm, or 62", so 162,5cm does, for sure, exceed that. Thank you for so correctly pointing that out! However, I would personally would not be so nervous for a case that is slightly over the H+W+D measurement as I personally have never had an issue with that at check-in due the staff normally "eyeball" the luggage, and if not grossly exceeding, it passes through. Although, even here, I am guessing that methods will evolve to capture the total dimension as well as the weight as today. The weight is something I currently personally pay even more attention to as it is quite clear and objective as every piece is checked and weighed to that extent. Thanks again for picking up on the total measurement and helping to point out as it is with the airlines and that standard. Have an awesome day!

LUGGAGE TIPS 1, 2, 3, 4 Tie three or four colored ribbons around the handle to your luggage to warn others that this is not their luggage. People grab luggage at the turnstile and take it home before you ever see it. Anywhere you put your bag, it could be grabbed in error. Example: overhead compartment, unloaded from the bus, at the hotel lobby, at the airport turnstile... These ribbons make your luggage different and EASY TO SPOT when the piece is surrounded by 35 other cases unloaded from the bus. Using 4 ribbons make it immediately different than other cases with 1 ribbon. Use 1” wide ribbons 14” long and not longer. Cut the ends at 45 degrees. Tie the ribbons as a sandwich, as if they were one ribbon. Use a man’s tie, a half Windsor knot for the best look. After it is tied on, the total length of the ribbons will be about 5 inches from the handle. This is too short to catch on anything such as rollers. Scissor cut trim the ribbons to cascading different lengths after they are tied. Put a drop of Super Glue at the end. If each ribbon is slightly a different length by 1/4” the color layers will all show up no matter how they drape. You can see these ribbons from 40 feet away. Perhaps tie TWO handles or RINGS top and side of the case. Tie using a HALF WINDSOR KNOT to the metal buckle ring of the handle. Learn Half Windsor knot tying: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-S_ny-hrKqzU.html This knot does not loosen. Put your phone number on one ribbon using a fine point permanent Sharpie. Example: “Owner 454-333-7878” No personal name necessary. No address necessary on the ribbon. Choose one ribbon with an unusual pattern or fabric to really make it unique. The 4th ribbon could be black color. Stand by the output port of the turnstile to reduce the chance of someone else grabbing your piece. Tie your skiies, duffel bag, backpack and what ever else with matching ribbons-even your computer case. If you are a Travel Agent, you could hot gold stamp one ribbon with your name and phone number. Send them a set of ribbons, red and blue and BLACK to your customer as a gift. Record this gift in your database so you don’t duplicate yourself. Buy a gold hot embossing machine. Gold emboss your business name on the BLACK ribbon. Put the customer’s name on it if possible. Pleasant color combinations: Red, white and blue Chartreuse and purple and orange Orange and light blue Orange and yellow Gray and pink Green and yellow Red and Green Red and Gold Light blue and light green and white The 4th ribbon could be white, gray, black, tan Tip #2 Take a cell phone picture of the ribbon tied on. Then another picture of the full luggage piece. You now have a way to communicate “what it looks like” if someone is tasked with searching for it. Take this picture outside in direct sun not under neon lights. Tip #3 Place a strip of colored duct tape on the inside lining to your case. Put TWO pieces in DIFFERENT places such as INSIDE a pocket to the case. If you dare, put your phone number DIRECTLY ON THE FABRIC WITHOUT USING TAPE. Or, put your name and phone number on this tape. If all identity is stripped from your case, you have this to show. If someone steals it and rips off identity tags, you can show the police officer the inside tape... To be sneaky about the tape, put your phone number on the STICKY side of the tape. Nothing is on the surface side of this tape. Tip #4 Put your phone number on a 2” x 1/2” piece of fabric or plastic sheet. Use colored Duct tape, such as black or red or neon, to tape this message to the top side of the handle. This message is under the tape hidden from view. The lettering does not touch the sticky part. Wrap it 2-3 times. Also include Tips 1,2,3 above. If you need to prove identity of the case, just unwrap it and show.

Enjoyed watching this thorough explanation. I wonder how accurate are manufacturers volume descriptions and how do they measure it? That is how many liters it takes. For example samsonite b-lite icon 71 cm has these measures 71x46x28-32cm and takes 83-90 liters but samsonite spark sng 67 x 44 x 27/31 cm is said to take 82-92 liters. The outer measures of the icon is larger so it doesn't add up? Do you know wich of these bags has the larger capacity?
@jameskrueger6282
@jameskrueger6282 2 года назад
Yes, you are totally correct. It does not add up... This is kind of the reason that I did this video. The luggage industry (which I am part of) is not great at standards for this kind of thing, even within the same company. I am guessing one would be hard pressed to get a straight answer on how these volume calculations have been done. Anyhow, the volume measurement for the b-lite icon seems to take into account actual packing volume loss due to wheel height and deviation from "box shape" with listed volume of 91% and 84% respectively. This kind of makes sense, but really depends on how the measurement and calculation has been made. The volume listed for the spark sng seems theoretically impossible as you kind of state as the volume grows or exceeds the maximum theoretical volume given a totally efficient box shape. A reasonable way to make these comparable would perhaps be to apply the same volume deviation for loss of packing volume due design (not totally box shape) and wheels, etc, and then 91% and 84% respectively. The correctness of this is however dependent on both cases being measured in the same way (which I unfortunately doubt...😅🤣😅😆). Anyhow, applying that method would give a perhaps reasonably comparable volume for the spark sng of approx 72/79 liters depending on if the expander is open or closed. So, in conclusion, it seems based on the info here, and given that both cases have been generally measured according to the same method, and with the same accuracy, that the b-lite icon is indeed slightly larger in packing volume than the spark sng. It is crazy. It would be super-interesting to hear what Samsonite themselves say. Wishing you an awesome day!

@@jameskrueger6282 This morning I said to my friend somewhat jokingly, this seems to be a guy to ask about luggage don't you think? Boy was I right! I want to thank you for providing me with a method to evaluate luggage size. You inspired me to bring out the tape measure and measure the Spark SNG 67 cm. I soon realized that its measures includes protruding handles both on the top and the side. Outer measures without handles are more like 65,5 x 42 x 27 x 4cm expansion. (its 27 cm at its highest point) All measures from manufacturer seem to concern "luggage space dimensions". Internally the size of the bag is about 56 x 41,5 x 27-31cm (height, here ill go with manufacturers measurements since its difficult to measure but seem to be correct). For reasons of measuring packing volume I think internal measures will be more valuable? If I calculate the volume from 56 x42 x 31 cm I get about 73 liters so I think you are spot on with your approximation! Probably some method where we fill the luggage with lets say tiny plastic balls and then measure their volume would be more accurate? Next ill be taking measures of the b-lite icon, in store.... Thanks for your detailed answer and the quality content and production quality of your video. Contrary to others here I do not think you talked to much, just enough.

I just want to know what measurement s they use when they say 20 24 and 28 inch suitcase , I’m buying a set and i have one home and wa t to know in comparison how big it is
@jameskrueger6282
@jameskrueger6282 4 года назад
Hi! Normally, 20, 24, and 28 refer to the size in inches. That would mean that 20" is roughly 51cm (size S or cabin), 24" is roughly 61cm (size M check-in), and 28" is roughly 71cm (size L check-in). However, these measurements are often used very generally, and it is my experience that a luggage referred to as 20, for instance, could vary in size from 48-55cm at least depending on the manufacturer, the method of measurement, and even the individual performing the measurement...

Any tips of check in luggage for lufthansa? Internationals flight i mean the size of luggage for 23 kilos / 50 pounds weight.
@jameskrueger6282
@jameskrueger6282 2 года назад
Not so much, but... My experience with Lufthansa is that they generally are very friendly, professional, and "correct". I would say to make sure that your luggage is not overweight as the weighing process seems to be more and more precise. Other than that, I would just not go to check in with luggage that is grossly and obviously over-sized. I hope that is helpful. Have a nice trip!

It kind of maybe depends on what you are using the measurement for, but yes normally - especially if you are planning to use the expander.

Hi! You are welcome. ☺️ The brand and model of the red case is ECHOLAC Celestra. I would absolutely recommend. It is super-nice, and really great to pack in. The Hinomoto wheels on it are very smooth, and make it almost feel like it has a tiny motor.

It is not an issue that how to measure, but the main is, I'm buying a bag online and it is showing dimensions as 79+55+32 = 166 cm and I came to know real dimensions of bags are different, those dimensions shared online are of Box in which bag comes. I was here to find how to find such bags. The bag I'm looking to buy is a "Kamiliant by American Tourister Large check-in suitcase (79 cm) Kam Triprism Aqua Spinner" But still Afraid it willl fit in 158cm limit or not.

Hi! Yes, thanks for letting me know... I think I also can understand your meaning. Actually, it is a little complicated...! 😅 I wish I could have shown in a more simple way. I will try next time. Anyhow, the basic idea of this video was to show in a simple, consistent way how to measure luggage for a brand or similar needing to do many in a structured and quick way as a system. The basic premise is to find the highest point in each direction of Height, Width, and Depth, and then transfer that to a straight edge that also acts as a ruler or measurement device.... Wishing you a great day!

What is the ideal size to fit 35 kilo
@jameskrueger6282
@jameskrueger6282 4 года назад
Hi! Sorry, but that is very hard for me to say, as it really depends on what (what kinds of items) needs to be fit inside. Maybe it is not for airline use you are asking, but/and most airlines have a 23kg limit for normal tickets, and 32kg for business and first class. I normally get quite close to 23kg with a large suitcase packed with my normal clothes and other travel-related items. I hope this anyhow somehow is helpful!
