I feel like this could be canonical if the writers decided to put a dark and sad end to the movie, Mario wanting to die to be with Luigi and either failing with Mario living in misery or actually successing and reuniting with Luigi

Also, I would just like to remind to everyone that this *_VERY WELL COULD'VE HAPPENED_* had Mario and Donkey Kong arrived a little too late, or if Mario didn't manage to catch Luigi just in time...
