For what I can see Daisy told Luigi about her pregnancy just in time for the final scenes to be filmed and then asked Luigi to talk to Mario so Luigi can have a paternity leave for her pregnancy. Mario after hearing about the situation told Luigi to fix the situation permanently or he will do it because if Luigi has a baby he will be less available for future proyects and that means delays and lost lf profit something Mario does not like and Luigi knows how Mario is when he is angry and has to dirty his hands, so Luigi solved the situation the most humane and painless way even if it killed him inside

Mario knows a tragic backstory (undefined death of Luigi's pregnant girlfriend) will drive up ratings!
