Luka is overrated in the sense that the mavs haven't gone past the conference finals. But for individual stats... He deserves all the hype he is getting. Luka's rookie year was already a preview of his greatness.

Yes, he said it in an interview that he tired to play defense everytime that he saw a bad call from the ref and we see how he always argue with referees and stock on his head. He don't need to be an Elite defender just a decent one is okay. Great team defense is the key to win. Just like the Nuggets, only KCP is considered an elite defender but their team defense is great. There are teams have a multiple elite defender like Bucks but struggle to play Team D just what happened in the recent playoffs.

His defense is actually super underrated. He's not quick or fast and certainly isn't a great defender but people act like he's the worst in the league yet he get's tons of steals and deflections and can block pretty much any guard in the league because of his size. In the 21-22 playoff run he finished 5nd in steals in playoffs (all 4 players with more steals played more games) and led all players in steals for almost the entire playoffs. He finished with 27 steals and 9 blocks in 15 games.
Out of 540 players in the NBA (2022/23 regular season), Luka was: #9 in defensive rebounds #28 in steals #30 in rebounds #113 in blocks Are those the stats of someone who doesn't play defense? Or do you not know what you're talking about?

Sure but that happens to everyone in the NBA, the main reason this looks so bad is because Dallas has absolutely no rim protection what so ever and there is never anyone home when he gets beat. This isn't really his fault and is an issue with the team, the roster construction and possibly coaching as well. The Mavericks front office clearly tried to adress the roster construction to add some interior defense this off-season, whether or not J Kidd can utilize the new pieces we will have to wait and see. Luka is still a decent defender with great awareness and hands, he lacks quickness, especially laterally but again this doesn't make him a terrible defender just is simply a weakness, he does well staying in front of people on the perimeter and has the length to get blocks, is always in good positions in passing lanes and if Dallas can protect them rim this will do wonders to help cover his only weakness on defense which is speed and lateral quickness which all oversized guards suffer from. The numbers don't lie, hes never going to be ALL-NBA defensively but he will consistently get tons of steals and a decent amount of blocks regardless of how many people cry about how bad he is.

Giannis and Jokic both got criticized before they won a championship and the same thing is happening with Luka. People are finally pointing out a possible reason why he isn't at their level and why it will be hard for him to get there without fixing his flaws. Not crazy at all, perfectly logical.

@@BlackLight_VA To say Luka is a terrible defender is just not true. Advanced statistics will tell you that. Luka's size probably helps him be an average defender at best. He isn't good on the perimeter but he's able to get steals, get def rebounds and alter some shots purely because of size. He only needs to be ok at defense when his offense is that good.

As a croatian, as teenager I use to spend summer on Island Krk, same island Luka was spending summer since this island is crowded with neighbors Slovenians. We were in the same village, played hoop together few times on open courtyard. By the time, 2014, we all knew he is famous because he is in Real Madrid. He is 1 year older than me and he was 2meters tall at 15. He was so lazy playing the game until we saw he is that good that he could easily dunk and shot 3points as much as easy. Until he accelerate himself at one moment, he shut 10/10 3pt in a row, 9/10 dunks in a row and nobody could stop him, not even close.
When I was watching Luka in the Euroleague as teenager, he was good, special but I never thought that he would make soo much show in the NBA. And I dont think that he is a bad defender, but he is not great either. But he can block you. In a team ypu need defenders and attackers.

Heres a reminder that Luka played professional basketball for 2 years straight non stop with no actual offseason. He played in the 2020 bubble in September/October, then started training camp almost immediately after in November then started the 2021 season on Christmas, then played in the Olympics in Tokyo where he averaged 24/10/9, then went straight to training camp and started the 2022 season where he averaged 28/9/8 (30/10/9 after January 1st) and made it to the Western Conference Finals after pantsing CP3 and Devin Booker, then went and played for Slovenia in Eurobasket even beating out Jokic and Serbia, then went straight back to the 2023 season averaging 32/9/8. And people out here questioning his work ethic? Hilarious.
