I play Luke Kelly for my Kurdish grandparents and uncles here in the north of Iraq. They can't get enough of it, and appreciate it even more as I translate what he's singing for them.
@@anthonywalsh7613 It is really more the raw nature of this kind of Irish music that resonates. It comes from the heart and are pure and unadulterated. I can play Kurdish folk songs for you from 100 years ago, and there are many similarities in the rawness and pure emphasis on tradition and authenticity.
This song was based on an a version sung by Norfolk farmworker Harry Cox, who you can hear singing it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ebUrzVbbVIg.html I included many versions of this song in my latest "Phonograph to Folk Revival" video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rzH9HaST5JA.html The series compares similar recordings of the same traditional songs by traditional singers and popular musicians. I roomed with this guy for 3 weeks in 1967! Cannot describe that experience! Highly intelligent fellow and wonderful friend! Never saw him again which was a pity!
Fuck me....I'm a proud Yorkshireman with an Irish mum and a Geordie dad....both passed away....I'm 49 and find myself looking and listening at great Irish songs....Luke Kelly is amazing...top man...what a voice...amazing.....I am coming to balfast in September 2020 fory 50th birthday.to see long long lost family....never been to Ireland before but feel an urge to visit where my late mum came from...can't wait....hoping to get a warm welcome and sing some of these Irish classics....hope to see you Irish people soon...
As a Polishman, I feel a spiritual kinship to the Irish, especially in the struggle for self-determination in face of invasions and subjugation, through the last century. I can't think of a singer who more powerfully embodies the Irish spirit than Kelly. And what a performer, exhorting the audience with his "Let's Hear Ya!"s. I've watched this more than other video on RU-vid, it really tugs at me. R.I.P. this legendary bard.
"one can never underestimate the manipulative power of the ENGLISH" Yep, we've apparently manipulated you into liking English folk songs (ie. "Black Velvet Band") ... silly sod. btw. there is no such thing as "the English", we are not not all in the ruling classes or oppressors, and many of us are related to Irish people and others around the world. Bigotry is not the answer to anything.
I remember this song in my childhood days in Mufulira - Zambia - Africa (80s, 90s). This year 2015 i visited Ireland. Tribute to the Mwape family of Kombe-Funda.
Yeah eade explain, how did this song get played to such a degree that you remembered it? Was it a once off and u remembered it or did this irish diddy somehow become a small hit for a while? Very interesting
Music is universal, people should've learned that by now. R.I.P Luke, Ciaran, Ronnie, and Barney. And long live John, may his last days be filled with happiness, and when he finally does move onto Fiddler's Green, I'm sure the lads will be there, waiting for him.
Dicky Herlambang It’s about a lad who’s out in the town of Belfast, a meets a pretty young maid (who has a black velvet band). He gets charmed and they walk for a bit before she nicks a pocketwatch from a passing gentleman and gives it to the lad. Next he’s in court for the theft of the pocketwatch, and ends up being sent to Australia on a prison ship. Sometimes, the young maid gets sent as well. The end of the song tells the moral: don’t get too taken by those young maids, beware before they get you drunk and doing stupid things. It’s more of a light warning or a fun tale then a sad song. Does that all make sense?
its the rearing of the Irish of the early 1900's, honest to god, you see the shite going on all over the world, people just cant be human, speak when spoken too, respect your elders and be reared with wit.Its all down to environment. The early 1900's in Ireland reared some brilliant people and characters....I'm blathering on now
2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 and I'm still coming back, and I'll be back in 2020 and every other year after that till im gone, legendary Luke Kelly
Dubliners are by far the best band Ireland have ever produced they will never be replicated or copied they are a one off simple as and luke kelly oh boy what a voice the best you will ever hear
when my husband was alive and lived Birmingham we always went to see the Dubliners brought back memiries my husband was burn Dublin I miss him every day when hear them
well spotted,..only change in him in later life is the lack of hair...lol...do you know if he was a musician then(well, an established one)...as ive only recently..about 4-5yrs got introduced to his music..the song was.."they never came home"..classic song what should never of been banned....and i bet Luke was one of his influences...as he obviousley influenced more legends, shane mcgowan, among others....RIP to a legend Luke Kelly
My mom and dad are dubs me we're all wend on the dubliners 55 years later still can't get over lukes voice every time I here his voice lost my old fella 16 years ago proper dub dessy murphy love you all ways from David Murphy Wolverhampton low hill xx
My first memories were sitting on my mum's knee, with her singing this song. this was long before I went to school. She used to go out with friends and take me along. Half the reason I still listen to Irish music is because I grew up listening to the Dubliners and the Irish rovers among other things. Every once in awhile especially when I'm drunk I come back and listen to this stuff and remember a time before life went bad
Exactly my case too. Both my parents are Irish immigrants that came to America. They had me, and all I could remember was my dad listening to all these Irish songs. This was the song they always stuck with me. It takes me back to a simpler time as well.
Authenticity. Stumbled here after watching some Shane macgowan videos with the Dubliners. The clarity of Luke's voice is unmatched by any artist before or since. Simply divine.
Luke will always be the heart of Irish music. Such a passionate talent. I don't believe in an afterlife as a rule but if there is such a place I want to jam with this man.
I really miss the Irish from the 60's, 70's and 80's in London and Manchester. Wonderful characters and people. Sadly, mostly have now either died or moved back to Ireland. The UK has been ruined. Thankfully, we have the legacy of all these lovely songs on video.
my grandad sang this to me when I was a child just love this song LUKE KELLY WAS a legend absolutely amazing I'm 52 years old now and still love this song brilliant absolutely fantastic what more can I say
Remember being in a boozer in the late 80s with me dar in derry with the whole gaff singing this at the top of our voices rest in peace dar ill never forget the times we spent together

I grew up hearing this song. Always loved it. Never knew what it was about till I was older. Great rendition, such passion, you don’t get that from the pop icons!
I've always loved music, when I was in my early teens I listened to Nirvana, Metallica and the Dubliners. Then Black Sabbath and the Dubliners. Later in my teens I turned to Death and Black Metal, during that time my favorites were Mayhem, Marduk, Bathory, and The Dubliners. When I finally got over that I found early american blues, so I listened to Robert Johnson, Son House etc, and The Dubliners. Gradually that turned into old american folk, like the Carter Family, Roscoe Holcomb, Dock Boggs etc. During this time I also listened to the Dubliners. I also listened to old Country like early Johnny Cash, Roy Acuff and also the Dubliners. Now 38 years old with life long passion for music Ive found beauty and quality in almost every genre, from peruvian mountain folkmusic to russian Hardbass. Imho the original Dubliners was the greatest band to ever exist. I continuously keep finding new layers of quality and passion in their music. 5 people, each one in a million somehow got together. So grateful. Thank you
Appalachian music has lots of Irish / Scottish influence absolutely amazing, check out the Bafla brothers , creole from Louisiana, I’ve also been listening to a lot of sacred harp music lately . Your taste in music is very similar to mine, love all types of music, been listening to the Wu, Mongolian metal and Motown. You have good taste in music.
@@13infbatt Thanks and great! I first heard Dewey Balfa (and Cajun music for that matter) in the movie Southern Comfort when I was a kid. The numbers in the end of that movie are still among my favorite Cajun recordings. Loved it ever since! Search for it here on YT if you havnt heard it! Never listened to mongolian metal though :) Will give it a go.
Haha Fantastic, I've loved many of the music genres/types you've mentioned here also and like you The Dubliners have always featured through all phases/discoveries but The Dubliners had a rare magic between the players that I've never experienced to the same extent since. Fair play Daniel Bergström hope they're still giving you as much as they continue to give me.
My mum was Irish I first went there when I was seven. Love this song and play it on my guitar. Shame we lost Luke so early . Great singer and a great song. Love the Irish. What's not to like? Great music and even better people
Everytime I hear Luke,& the Dubliners singing they remind me of my Irish roots,& the Pride,& Passion l hold dear to my heart. My brother was born on St Patrick's Day,& religiously every year we've celebrated his extra special day by immersing ourselves in everything Irish,& this year will be the same,a plethora of Irish music in the air along with plenty of Guinness at hand, what more could a couple of Irish Rovers want!! 😉🍀☘️🎻🎵🎶🍻🍻
Rest Easy, Luke, one of the greatest singers in Irish history. A true icon of this country. It's performances like this that make me proud to be an Irishman (Cause it's surely not the government, hahaha) 🇮🇪♥️
I remember the evening when Luke died (but he had been seriously ill for some time before that) I had just arrived home with my new car and was all excited but then they said on the radio that Luke Kelly had died and were playing his songs and talking about him on the radio for the rest of the night. So every time I hear Luke it makes me think about that evening and that car - a mint condition 1979 Fiat 128 3p with only 20,000 miles on the clock (for the car guys who might want to know)
My dads favourite, love it. There will never be a band like them or close till them ever again, so talented! I love them & now my daughter knows them. Passed down generations 💖 as they r amazing. Love Luke Kelly & the Dubliners. Who agrees with me? Feb 2021 💚🍀💚🍀💚🍀💚
I love this song and I love Lukes exuberance, he's a great entertainer - he obviously appealed to a variety of age groups and people from all walks of life judging by the audience. I've just read about him on wikipedia (i'm too young to remember him!!) it was sad he died so young, what a talent lost :o( RIP
As an Irish descendant, I can't in words express the pride I hold for my heritage, and the many hardships my ancestors faced to traverse across the pond, to find a better life, only to discover false promises, Typhius, and sparse, barren land. I'd call Luke and the gang the very embodiment of Irish-hardiness and endurance throughout. R I P to these restless paddies, rovers, and rogues who sang their souls out for the world to hear, be it in jest, dread, or a bottle full of mountain dew, they danced the Ragman til they dropped; a life well lived.
I was at a Music gig last night and the Irish folk duo played this. It took me back to my childhood when my dad used to play this back in the day. Pure memory and Raw emotion for me. ♥️
this was my party song when me and all my drinking fishermen friends used to party in the 60s oh how i loved listening to the dubliners in my era of life they were the best of folk music.you will never be forgotten thats for sure.
If I possessed a fraction of this fine man's passion ...I would breeze through life on an inexplicable high ..every time I hear his wonderful voice ..truly awesome
I miss my Dad so much. When I was little he would play this for me on his accordion when ever I asked. Even if it was 10 times a day (which I did several times) he'd always play it. 😔💙 #LoveAndMissYouDad #ScottishLass
more than 30 years later and not even the best singers of today can even touch luke, his headstone says, luke kelly dubliner, nothing else needs to be said of such talent
two things i love above all others about Luke Kelly, the wild shock of red hair, and the magnificent command of the musical history and heritage of Ireland.Thank you for the years of entertainment Luke, and RIP
I have played this song many years but only as guitarist/backup singer. I am due to perform at a St Paddy's night here in the Philippines next week. My pal who did most of the singing last year at the same gig was murdered last August, so its just me. I clicked on this just to get the phrasing right for the verses. Luke Kelly is a master. I wish I had seen them all live way back in the day.
Today, although is his death birthday, , our dearest Luke Kelly, we'll never forget you. You are kept in our hearts and our souls forever. We love you too much.
That's a great Irish song and it can be perfect for St. Patrick's Day ☘ 🌈 🇮🇪! God bless Luke Kelly and he is still legend. Everyone always remember him and his music 🎶. Happy St. Patrick's Day ☘ 🌈 🇮🇪!
