I am danish - went to see the The Dubliners in Galway in 1968 for the first time. Talked with Ronny and Luke after the concert and asked them why they not did visit Denmark - as I said: you are very popular in Denmark. - Luke said to me: We will and you shall be our manager - i thought he was joking - but i have seen The Dubliners many times in Denmark since
for the 211 people who disliked this!! I take it yea are not Irish, as this sound speaks to the soul of any Irish man or woman! If you don't like it, just leave and take your negativity with you! the rest of us will just listen and admire a music which is very much lost in these days
Met Luke in 1967 He became a gorgeous friend for a few weeks then I had to travel back to my home country. Most gorgeous person I have ever met! So sad he died so early!!! The world is missing people like him!!!! I am so serious!
I listen to this, close my eyes and im 9 years old again and back in my uncle's black Jeep. The inside smells like leather and Drum rolling tobbaco and the windows are down. We're speeding down a backroad to some car boot sale, Luke kelly is blaring in my ear and the wind coming in the window is singing alongside him. No cares in the world. I feel very fortunate to be reminded of these great memories whenever I listen to these lads.
@@obscureironwork2511 i only mention that i am protestant because a few people who are ignorant would think that i would not enjoy these songs of course they are good songs there is enough crap on this earth without people hating each other
living in king's cross london 25 years ago i used to hear this song every night in a pub. ON the street then i was, i cant believe I am still here. I cant even listen to the whole thing, the tears are so deep and the pain so cruel. amazing such a rough voice can do that
Luke Kelly, was the best Irish Folk singer from Ireland. And he was 44 when he died. He's the lead singer on this one. And he inspired a lot of singers. And he will always remember, by The Dubliners.
And they carry on :::Lukes tears at that line tells us what he thought of the Irish situation up north. He was my dad's age 1940.RIP LUKE KELLY 1940 /1984 IRISH TO THE BONE.
I'm an American, I was in the Army stationed in Germany in the 80's. I got to know some irish Workers from Sligo, visited their families too. Got to know the Irish, introduced to, "The Dubliners", I love this beautiful music and the people.
Thank you for your service my brother. From my family to yours I appreciate your sacrifice. Much love. My great grandparents where from Ireland and Scotland.
He sang with the deepest feeling in his heart. Never Luke can be forgotten. His striking voice enters in our minds and souls in a very special and passionate way!!!
God bless Luke Kelly! I feel so emotional every time I hear him sing this song. I am Norwegian, but feel very Irish every time I enjoy the great music of The Dubliners! I hope one day Ireland can be one whole country again. Let the music and common culture bring the people together again, not divided by religion and imperialism!
I had the privilege to play Bennigans in Derry annually for 8 years. After all the jazz and mayhem I would just play this melody on the piano. They all sang. Beautiful people and I miss them very much.
He used to play in a pub called the bridge in Newcastle before he was in the Dubliners when you see this video it’s a shame only John Sherman is here now
Many times we have heard this song but none has sung this with the conviction and passion like Luke. He was a God send to the Irish cause at that moment in time.
Met Luke and the guys many many times. Glad I lived to see the Dubs live on stage hundreds of times. Just ordinary guys like us all, but each gifted in a very special way. Their like will never be seen again. Sláinte. From a Yorkshireman, Phil*
Mr. Kelly, ye taught me of irish life. I was born in America to a son of Erin and I will return when Ireland is whole. Luke and paddy are musical heritage
"The Town I Loved So Well" is a song written by Phil Coulter about his childhood in Derry, Northern Ireland. The first three verses are about the simple lifestyle he grew up with in Derry, while the final two deal with the Troubles, and lament how his placid hometown had become a major military outpost, plagued with violence. It has been covered by The Dubliners and...." --wikipedia
something, I never realised until a couple of years back, and it was before digging into my Irish side and fully knowing Luke Kelly, but, my eldest boy is Luke and my youngest, is Kelly...
I've been listening to Luke Kelly since I was about 10 years old. I'm 55 years old now, and I'm still listening. It's a shame that the youth of today are destroying statues of Luke all over Dublin. R.I.P Luke Kelly.
@@B1N4RYGH0ST They arrested a man in 40s for destroying the statue - maybe give the youth a break, we were all young once and blamed for things we did not do. 40s are closer to your age group than Williams.
Ex British MN...spent many a happy night drinking the black stuff....the Irish were always more than welcoming to us hard worked sailors...Ronnie was the engine....Luke was the star that they sailed by....
This is the song of the history of Derry. Listen and learn. It somehow embraces the sad times and celebrates potential for the future in one song. I'm 41,and from the Republic and I visited Derry 3 years ago, this song was in my brain during my trip, especially while I was walking along the old city walls. It made me feel sad. But also proud to identify so strongly with a town. I remember a lot of sad stories coming out of derry when I was a kid. I hope those times are gone.
Nobody can keep up with Luke. It´s one of my most favourite songs. It´s haunting. Yes I think haunting is the appropriate word. It contains painful and wistfulness, but it´s not too depressed and mournful.
I'm convinced I met him or something of a doppelganger in Epsom 6 years ago....of course he's been long gone for a good while now....but the man my father and I passed with his wife recognised me, my dad claimed he had no clue who he was....he had foggy whispy hair and spoke exactly with the same sort of inclination.....Luke lives on in some
holy moses...what a pair of lungs and voice!!!...never will Ireland have a singer like Luke:-).....once a lifetime they say..i say it's forever!!..may he rest in peace:-)
