My Brother John Kelly from Waterford was buried in trent park London on 31st oct 2012 and Me and my other 3 brothers carried his coffin, along with his son and brother in law. I sang the candy store in the church and my eldest brother gave a few words, then the whole family sang the green fields of france just before we carried him out. and at the pub, the Blue Moon in Wood green we all sang for the entire duration. and I sang Peggy gordon more times that day then then I can remember R.I.P. John
33 years later 2017 and not even the best singers of today can touch luke, his headstone merely says, luke kelly dubliner, of such talent nothing more needs to be said
I remember playing this under the carpet of stars laid out above my head in the utter isolation of Bell Gorge in Western Australia, I was drinking me some Bushmills by the campfire and feeling so small and insignificant in the far outback of that ancient prisoners island.
Ah. I wish I had the brain to describe how this and every Luke Kelly makes me feel - happy, sad, emotional, the whole lot. He is the best of the best and it is wonderful to know that really good singers will not record their version of Lukes songs out of respect for the best of all we have heard. RIP Luke, you will never be forgotten.

This is the song of my youth, my Dad used to play this on the old vinyl record player when he'd had a few & dance around with my mother while she laughed heartily at his very (very) bad singing. The music lives on, and so does the memory
one of the first songs that I learned to sing 40 odd years ago and I love it just as much today that Luke Kelly had an amazing voice and it will remain in our hearts and memories forever. R.I.P. Luke hope your having a ball.

This is my 3yr old daughter Aoibhs favourite song. At least 5000 of these views are hers. Most toddlers lift their parents phone and want to watch Peppa Pig or something. Aoibh clicks on this video every time and sings along. I'm OK with that 'screen time'.
I have an obsession with this song. My son, who is 2, insists on hearing this song every time we drive or are in a room with a computer... I guess we both know good music when we hear it.

It was not by chance that Patrick Kavanagh told him he had a song for him to sing.Kavanagh knew he could trust Luke to deliver the words of his poetry into the medium of song when he gave him "Raglan Road." Frank Sinatra was also a great interpreter of the words of a song given to him.Totally different types of singers but they were both geniuses in their own respective spheres.Who knows they might be having a right old sing-song together on the other side !!Cheers! Luke sang from his heart and from his soul. He rates up there among the best in my book. I saw him upstairs on a number 16A double decker bus in Dublin one night a few months before he died. I love a man, or woman, who sings their heart out. I will see you again in the next life Luke and hopefully you will let me sing a song or two with you.
I love Irish music comes from having an Irish granny the Dubs and the Clancy bros were my favs the old albums are more or less worn away but I have now got most on c.d. My wife was Irish and her father and I were bosom buddies many a bottle of whisky was tanned as we sat listening to all the old fav's his fav song was Carrickfergus he always comes to mind when I hear that old fav o his like Luke hes up there in heaven enjoying a wee song or two.
I used to sing this in the bar when I used to go in the US Forces Ski Lodge in a town in Bavaria, 1975/6. ! A girl singer of the band in there at one time, learnt it from me.Great times!

You can feel it in your very soul. It is the chord or force that connects us with our "Irishness". A pride beyond pride. An emotion there is no name for, except perhaps an understanding that we are part of something. That somewhere within us all there is thousands of years of Irish culture. Luke had it in his voice, Joyce in his words but we all have it somewhere.
This reminds me of me old man when he was in drink. He loved to sing it. I remember enjoying me old father when he’d been at the whisky, he was a very happy drunk.
Met an Irish woman 18 years ago in Worcestershire who claimed her mother was Peggy Gordon. In County Down I met a young man who claimed his mother was Van’s Brown Eyed Girl. Then I met an older man who was a very good friend for years, from Dublin, who claimed in his youth, he knew Peggy who drank in the Dublin pubs of his youth. Whatever the truth or fantasy of any of these stories, they’re all lovely.
Since the song goes back to the mid- if not early- 1800s, 'fantasy' is the operative word. This version is based on one collected in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia, in, oh, the 1940s, I suppose.
Who cares, Irish or Scottish, we are all Celts. Luke sings from the heart and that's what counts. There wil never be another Luke Kelly; and while this is good it pales when compared to many other of his ballads. akgwatts
I'm a proud kerry man but I have soft spot for the Dubs and there love for great music .. I guess it's all about being Irish... when this virus is over I need to get to Dublin and have a few beers in the Celt bar the confession box or cobblestone or maybe all in the one night
