The Pythons did two special Episodes for German television, in the first one they actually spoke German, while the second featured German dubbing. As far as I know, John Cleese was the only one being able to speak the language.

This is simply outrageously funny, and even funnier if you speak German and English well enough to understand both versions. Good translation is never a literal word for word transposition but rather something which matches the context of the original language and to my ear they have done very well. I just love the letter too!

Well, we are doing a version, where the quier is actually ok with a lumberjack being a flower-pressing transvestite. Less offensive, but still funny, because it is a nice juxtaposition that registers as strange to most non-lumberjacks. And that might as well have been the joke originally, but apparently Python found that would be an unbelieveable reaction :) I like the fact that they say only 70% are transvestites. That takes away some of the offensiveness, makes it just strange and funny.

@JodieFosterLookalike On the choice of verbs, I stand corrected. But in German, you don't need "zu" (which does indeed mean "to") to make a verb infinitive. In German, verb infinitives usually end in "-en". (Example: "fellen", which means "to fell".)
