Irrepressible. Passionate. Dedicated. Focused. These are a few of the words coworkers and clients use to describe Cheri Mitchell. Cheri began her career in property management, where she encountered professionally what she already knew personally-that people with disabilities have few options when it comes to affordable, accessible housing. Eager to use her knowledge and experience to address this and other challenges, Cheri joined the Georgia Advocacy Office (GAO), Georgia’s federally mandated organization for providing information, technical assistance, and advocacy for people with disabilities.
The GAO works to protect people with disabilities against discrimination while equipping them with the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to live independently and accomplish their goals. Over her 25-year career, Cheri has helped countless people with disabilities transition from nursing facilities into accessible housing, in addition to tackling many other systemic challenges people with disabilities face.
As a person with a disability herself, Cheri relates to her clients with an unmatched empathy. Her own experience has taught her that people with disabilities can achieve whatever they hope to accomplish; they just might need to adapt and ask for help. Cheri is always there to help. She is a powerful voice for and in the disability community.
