@@ImageMaven Hi Marlene, I am interested in general photography, landscape, seascapes buildings etc Initially I bought a Nikon D750 complete with a Nikkor 24 - 120mm F4 great camera but Marlene it’s too heavy to lug around for a long time, the G9 was my original choice but went for the Nikon because I have previously used them. I haven’t used the G9 yet as I am in the process of getting to grips with settings, I have thought of buying a macro lens for my butterfly photography either the Sony 60mm or the Panasonic Lumix 30mm both well rated although I have also read that the supplied 12 - 60 Leica DG Vario Elmarit lens is also good for this type of photography. Thanks Best wishes Anyway.

Thanks for the video. When I bought my G9, I was astounded to find there were 19 customisable function buttons. I reckoned I'd never need them all. After owning the camera for some time now, I'm pleased to say my first guess was spot on. That said, the front/rear arrangement of buttons by the lens is a cracker. So quick, so easy. The quick menu is my favourite option as I don't have to depend on my aged memory. Thanks again.

Great overview! Very informative. I just got a secondhand G9 in addition to my mostly Olympus and Canon fleet. I couldn't figure out that need to disable the direct AF point selection with the joystick if you want to set the cursor function buttons. Fortunately if you re-enable joysticks the associations stay, so I can have similar settings like on my Oly EM1.2, but with an extra joystick. I doubled some on Oly for direct selection of drive modes, but on G9 I'm using one of the new-found Fn buttons to customise within the two settings. Super helpful. If I could only set the fps rate to a rate of my choosing...

And this was a perfect point - being able to remember what you stored where - would be the hardest part. Same goes with the custom modes C1, etc. However I have already the C3 mapped to bulb mode, as it depends on a couple of other settings which always slip my mind.

Marlene. Thank you. You are a G9 Godsend. After months of research and debate I purchased my first digital camera (my old Nikon F3 and legacy Nikkor Manual non AF lenses are still stored away). I chose the G9, especially because of the incredible versatility and enhanced (with firmware revision 2.0) video capabilities. I’m working on my PhD in Digital Camera Configuration 😅 with your help. It’s exciting, like being away on a desert island and coming back to discover a changed world. Certainly my early education in film photography has helped but I remain absolutely astonished at the power of these tools. Thanks for your GREAT instruction videos.

Hi Keith, It can definitely be overwhelming when you get your first digital camera -- more like a computer that takes pictures. My advice is to learn one or two things at a time. It will take a while to get your muscle memory to find the dials, and time to figure out which menus you will use the most. I've got a simple video that goes over the basics of Picture size, Quality, ISO, and WB. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-01heIyPkvj4.html And I also suggest making friends with the Quick Menu. Saves lots of time and has all the settings you use the most. You saw me use it in this video a bit. Enjoy and thanks for stopping by. Hope to see you in the comments again soon.

@@ImageMaven BTW forgot to comment on your Godox flash video when you were shooting skateboarders. Godox also manufacture the PB960 Power Pack which can be used in conjunction with some of their flashes as well as OEM ones. It has a 4500 mAh lithium battery so plenty of juice and will drop the refresh time on your flash. It will allow you to shoot longer, faster and capture more images. If you're interested in going down this path you additionally need to purchase the Godox PB-CX Propac Canon Cable which is compatible with Canon and Godox flashes.

3.5 years ago I started down the photographic road & 1st got a Sony camera. It had no integrated touch screen to the menu sys ( that was very difficult / ponderous to get through ) with only 1 or 2 function buttons. After a year or so I started looking for something that was a bit more user friendly. I read some reviews & picked up a Lumix Fz 2500 bridge camera which had a fully articulating touch screen that was integrated to the menu sys as well as having a plethora of ' function buttons '. This has made the camera more my own. Ex. I've disengaged the focus from the shutter button & turned a button that's on top next to the shutter as my ' focus '. I've set up all the function buttons as my preferences dictate. I think a camera's user friendliness is often overlooked or downplayed in reviews.

I mostly shoot birds (with the G9 ;-)), so I started using Animal Detect since firmware 2.0 and I also use back button focus. The AF/AE Lock button set to AF-On in the menu. When focussing doesn't work I have set 2 alternatives: AF-Far for Fn17 (the right arrow on the wheel) and AF-Near set to Fn19 (left arrow). Then I have a quick access to a focusmethod that will do the right focussing for me. Still testing if this works for me on the long term in the field but first impressions seem ok

Hi Marlene, as you know I'm currently practicing bird photography with my G9. I want to use manual exposure but using auto ISO for fast exposure control so that I keep full control of aperture for depth of field and shutter speed to freeze the motion of fast moving birds. To get maximum control of the exposure such as photographing backlit subjects, I intend to use exposure compensation (EC). I was considering assigning a function button to exposure compensation because I have difficulty finding the EC button whilst looking through the viewfinder. I don't want to take my eye away from the viewfinder and risk missing the shot. (So I re-watched your video to see if I had missed anything). However, whilst considering which function button to assign, I had an idea. I tried using my middle finger to press the shutter instead of the traditional forefinger and keep my forefinger on the EC button. To adjust exposure, I press the EC button with my forefinger and rotate the back wheel. I should mention that I have exposure compensation adjustable only when the EC button is depressed. So when I release it, the real wheel returns to the shutter speed adjustment. This not only turned out to be a more comfortable way of grasping the camera but also seems to give a smoother action when pressing the shutter release. The EC button is under my forefinger so no need to look for it. This could also be useful if you like to shoot JPEGs in semi automatic modes (i.e. P, S & A) as you can also find the white balance and ISO buttons by feel with your forefinger. 😀

Nice and informative! Two comments: first is that unless I'm doing something wrong, Fn1 is the only custom button that can be set to access the AF system - so that will remain unchanged on my unit. The other comment is that I view the front lever as a sort of on/off switch, so I've set that to be my IBIS on and off as I go from tripod to handheld and back again; really handy and fast for my usage.

Possibly. If you go to page 61 of the pdf owner's manual, it has the list of all the functions that can be set via Function Buttons. There are 3 flash settings that you can choose. I would test this out for yourself. I don't have my flash with me right now, but let me know if you can test it. Honestly though, not sure I would use it. Wouldn't it be easier to just turn the flash power on and off since it's right on the hot shoe? I can see the use for OFF camera flash, but not for ON camera. I'm curious why you would want to do this. I would like to learn!

Good to hear, Christine. You can actually change the playback speed of any RU-vid video you’re watching to be faster or slower. So the next time you land on a video that’s too fast, you can slow it down. Cheers!

Go to the mode dial on the top left of the camera. What is it set on? You are probably using iA or Creative Control mode, or one of the C modes. You can rotate that dial while viewing the Fn 10 on the LCD (back of camera) and you'll quickly see which modes it works in.

I noticed the ability to assign a Fn Button to a Custom Set (C1 or C2 etc.). However when the Fn Button is actually pressed, the Cx settings dont seem to work properly. It would be great if this really worked. Any experience with this?
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 4 года назад
No, this seems a little overkill for my particular workflow. There are enough regular fn buttons for me to choose from. And I find the Cx dial hard to remember what's in each. So I just use the Fn buttons for quick changes, and I utilize the extra blank one in the Quick Menu for anything that I need during the shoot -- depending on what I'm shooting and conditions.

Hi Gene, You set that up in the camera, not the lens. Easiest to use the Photo Styles for that. Quick Menu is easiest. And you can customize your quick menu too. I have a video about that. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-VyZnaWZFQiQ.html Hope that helps.

I would like to configure a Fn button for Exposure Bracketing and perhaps another for Aperature Bracketing. Ideally, each would be pre-configured so that one press of the assigned button would toggle bracketing on/off. Is this possible? Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Hi John, This type of scenario might work better as a Custom Mode. You can set up 5 different ones. I've got a video about it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bWvFTNPm77g.html Let me know if it works! Cheers.

Thanks Marlene for your prompt and clear response. I believe we have come to the same conclusion, but unfortunately all of my Custom Modes are currently configured (Walk Around, Action, Portraits, Low Light, Legacy Lenses). Search for a work-around leads me to another question that follows. This question probably belongs with your referenced video on Custom Menus and I will try to post it there as well: When I ser my Mode dial to one f my Custom Modes (say, C1) it works exactly as advertised in making my desired menu changes. Now if I change the mode dial to M (for example) will all the other menu choices revert to the defaults or will they stay as defined in C1? I now if I change from C1 to C2 all the menu selection change to those defined by C2 but not so sure re how to retain all the C1 settings except the metering mode. Thanks again for all your help.

Thank you for a very informative video. I am very new to the G9. I followed your instructions and programed fn 10 for monochrome as you did. I used it several times but now when I turn on the camera I can see the LmonochromeD in fn10 on the display but it is greyed out and will not work. Have I changed something that keeps it from functioning properly? I restored to default (off) and re-programed fn10 but it still is greyed out???? Any suggestions or ideas?

You are likely in a shooting mode that doesn't support LMonoD, such as iA mode or creative mode.

Marlene. Thanks for your reply.. my actual remote unit is exactly the same one as used in that video link you recommended.. I’ve been using the remote for a few years with NO problems, I used it last yr for bird photography in my garden very successfully, however my camera settings are still the same, but the camera (G9) only records video when I hit the remote button ? Now I’m wondering if the latest firmware upgrade that I did only a few weeks ago has changed this remote function ? If it has, how would landscape photographers go on without the remote feature, they need it to eliminate camera shake ! It seems strange I’m having this problem since the firmware upgrade ?
