Here's a tip I'm not sure you know about, it doesn't work on my Olympus cameras but it does on my Panasonic GX7. In the menu there's an AF/AE lock HOLD setting, turning this on lets you lock focus using the AF/AE button on the back, pressing the button again will release focus allowing you to focus with the shutter button.

I bought the G9 three days ago and i was really struggling to set it up reading the manual is a poor second to actually being shown how to use the camera settings. Great summary. Thank you. I bought my G9 4 months ago and spent alot of time trying to familiarize myself with its myriad features. Your video has provided a succint summary that at least now I'm able to understand. The G9 was my first digital camera beleive it or not. It replaced my old Nikon F3 HP which had been put away for years. But, I did save 4 very beautiful Nikkor AI lenses from the mid '80s and am amazed at how nice they are in obvious manual mode on the G9 with an adapter.

Whilst I think the G9 is a fantastic camera, for myself, the worst aspect of the G9 is the manual. I have spent hours wading through it usually when some setting has been accidentally turned on and I search endlessly and desperately to turn it off. Your video gives some clues about where to find the settings. I can give one example: I wanted to turn off focus peaking when shooting autumnal landscapes. I expect to find it around focus settings, NOT display. Doing a search for peaking in the manual eventually shows how to set the options for peaking but how to turn it on and off is in a different section of the manual. Why? thanks for the comprehensive video. I have subscribed.

Great video to combine all of your most common settings for your most common shooting scenarios! I have a G85 (would love a G9, but can't afford one currently!) and most of the settings are the same as you have them, but the G9 has a few advanced settings that the G85 does not -- and the AF seems a good bit better. I shoot JPEG+RAW and mostly I am shooting family photos and some landscape -- it's definitely easy to edit the JPEG files quickly and distribute to family and friends. For the more "important" photos (to me anyway!) I take the RAW and fully edit those. Thanks! Stay safe!

Hi Andrew, reviewing your terrific videos another time. I had to RESET the camera (except wifi settings) yesterday. I had my camera all set how I like it and used it on a workshop in the Tetons National Park (Wyoming) then put it in its backpack which has been in my room since last October. Pulled it out to get going again and nothing was working (actually I was sitting on a dune in front of a beautiful lighthouse) and no focus -checked all the usual suspects and had my hubby check my settings. Was not on manual focus-but even manual was not working. Makes no sense. Came home days later and sat down to figure it out. Got a bit of focus happening but then it recorded black-if it recorded anything (still photos). That’s beyond my ability to debug. So I did the RESET in the menu system. Works fine now. But I did have to go through the menu system and fix all the settings back to where I want them. The default mode came back as med quality jpeg which would have made me cry if I had not noticed that on the display (there’s way too much info on that PIP screen-but at least its all there-just need to be careful to check it all out and not ‘see past it’ all the time. Your videos helped me make certain everything is as it should be. Thank you so much.

@naturesimagephotography
@naturesimagephotography 4 года назад
Not sure what you mean but the answer might depend on your experience level. I shoot Manual so I have to consider exposure for every photo. If you are shooting auto the camera does most of the work for you. If shooting in AV the camera still does most of the work but you might need to look into exposure compensation.

Thank you. I have been teaching photography for about 15 years and the methods I use work for me, and also seem to make a lot of sense to my students. Hi Andrew. I have a G9 and use it a lot for aircraft/bird photos. The manual is...crap basically. Typically written by someone who understands the tech but can't get it across. I need to start shooting manually more to give me control of prop/rotor blur and high vibe situations like air to air/air to ground, and I am also after birds in flight. I could never quite work out why AFC never cut it until I watched this and you used the multi area. The 100_400 Leica is staggering combined with the stab on this kit so the AF was a bind being hit and miss. Constant preview and pre burst also look ideal. Cheers chap, the mist is clearing!!!

I wish I had this years ago (all the LUMIX cameras work pretty much the same), as it is probably the most compact and well-reasoned strategy and explanation I have seen. I’ve found you can have your cake, and eat it too with back button focus: simply engage the AF/AE Lock as described and don’t change anything else. When you want BBF, press the AF/AE Lock button. The rest of the time I half press the shutter button.

Great video Andrew. Very clear and easy to follow. I also have a G9 and use pretty much the same settings as you, other than a couple of things: I almost always use the custom white balance rather than AWB (which I find helpful because it often gives you a better and more consistent starting point for editing in post, particularly for video) and I shoot in Raw + JPG, rather than just RAW. Like you I generally use the RAW files but I find it helpful to use the JPGs in my workflow to identify which photos I want to edit, then I open the RAW to develop/edit. It's also handy to have the JPG versions in camera for occasional instant transfer for sharing. 🙂
@kwchalky02
@kwchalky02 4 года назад
... and for photo style if I know I'm going to be editing (which is 95% of the time) then I use Natural for photo and V-log L for video. If not going to edit then I use Standard.
@naturesimagephotography
@naturesimagephotography 4 года назад
Thanks for the tips. I briefly used RAW + way back after switching from film to digital but found I never used the JPEGs so it was just a waste of memory. That might change next time I go travelling as I might want to upload some photos to social media while on tour. I should look into the custom white balance because I have always found the G9 skews towards magenta, but as I mentioned in the video, shooting RAW I always sort it out in post processing. I will look into the ideas you shared, thank you.

Thanks for your informative Video👍🏻. I recommend to don’t shoot just RAW because the image quality in preview mode isn’t good and unsharp and you can‘t evaluate if your shot was a good one. It’s better to shoot both, RAW and jpeg👍🏻
@RogerNordin
@RogerNordin 4 года назад
Another advantage is also if you want to transfer some photo on the go to your smartphone for social media sharing on the go. Therefore I shoot RAW+JPEG with the JPEG set to lower quality 8MP mode. It's enough for that purpose and makes transfers to my phone faster! For editing all I use are the RAW files, of course. Win-win!

Have you tried the Animal AF? I think it works pretty well for BIF (as much or better than the other modes on the G9). I also find it very helpful to have the front buttons mapped to front/back focus pulling.

Hi Tim, yes I have tried it and have had some successes and some failures. Not convinced it is more effective than my method but giving it the benefit of the doubt I still give it a try from time to time.

Can anyone who has the camera say how many degrees the rear LCD screen rotates? I'm not sure if it goes up to 270 degrees or just 225 degrees. Thx

Great video and excellent explanations. I have had the G9 camera and firmware now is 2.1. But right from day one I've had a problem where the camera will not focus frequently until I point at something else focus and then return the original subject and re-focus. If this happens to be a bird and most often it is the bird is long gone. Has anyone got this problem? The lens I use is the 100-400mm lens.

You can try this, perhaps it will help. In the firmware 2.0 there was a new feature in the autofocus options: AF-ON Near Shift/Far Shift. I have assigned Near Shift to one of my function buttons. If the camera is confused by choosing to focus on subject or background, I hit the Near Shift and it automatically goes to the closer object...which is almost always the subject I want.

Intresting video, thanks. New subscriber. I guess some of it’s habit like not using back button focus but I was a little puzzled by reversing the aperture & shutter speed dials. Just seems to make sense to me the aperture dial being the front, as it’s closer to the lens & where the aperture is in front of the shutter, and the SS dial at the back, kind of where the shutter is. Just me tho. Also curious how it differs and why you don’t use the Tracking focus setting? I tend to just leave mine on the first (people & animals) setting too. Cheers!

As I said in the video I made about reversing the dials, every DSLR camera I have ever owned had the shutter speed at the front, aperture at the back. To complicate things further, my other current camera is set up that way. So I knew it was going to drive me nuts switching from one camera to the other. I teach photography and I have held most modern cameras in my hand...I would say the placement of the dials (front and back) is about a 50/50 split between the brands. Canon being one of the biggest ones that has the shutter speed at the front. I occasionally use the animal focus for wildlife although I am not convinced it is much better than using custom multi. I am doing a lot more portraits since this video was made and I use the face/eye/body detect almost all the time for that. The tracking focus...I can't see any real use for that. My understanding is you have to touch the screen to identify what you want the camera to track. Not practical for a hand-held camera and an erratic moving subject.

Nature's Image Photography Workshops And Tours Sorry yeah by habit I meant what you’re used to from muscle memory/time using other cameras. I can see how that would be frustrating using various cameras. I forgot about having to tap on the subject in Tracking focus mode. Also struggling to think of scenarios when that would be handy, possibly following a car around a track or something but I’m not sure it would be any better. 😕 I’m also curious about the Highlights metering mode as I’ve only just noticed it and tend to just leave it on Multi. I’m shooting in manual with Auto ISO and 3200 upper limit which I’m really liking, pushing shutter speed down to keep ISO down. Cheers! Look forward to watching more of your videos.

Another thing I found to be really handy is setting the menu dial to changing the ISO instead of the headphone volume, especially if you mainly take photos. Edit: I have a question about Constant Preview: My screen gets massive fps drops when I enable it. Is this normal or do you have something else enabled?
@naturesimagephotography
@naturesimagephotography 3 года назад
I tried that idea with the menu dial but I found I kept knocking the dial just walking around and changing the ISO by mistake. I know some people use your method and like it but unfortunately not a great option for me. The constant preview screen shows you the images at the shutter speed you choose. So if you are doing a 5 second exposure and move the camera, it takes 5 seconds for the screen to refresh. So for regular photography it's fine but I find it best to turn it off for slow shutter projects.

Hi Andrew. I use quite a few of the same settings as you describe in the video, and I want to thank you for the constant preview one. Until this point, I'd always been using the front bottom button to turn it on - which is a pain to always do. I suppose I should have just looked deeper into the menu to realize I could have it always on :). One thing I'd like to point out to you is in regards to the picture mode you use. Since you are always shooting RAW, it makes absolutely no difference which one of the modes you choose. Those modes exist exclusively for in-camera processed JPG files. So, if you are shooting RAW+JPG or just JPG, then the picture mode you choose matters. If you're shooting only RAW, it makes zero difference. So, don't worry if you forget to change from "Standard" to "Portrait" mode.

Thanks for the tip. As I have explained to a few people individually (but forgot to explain properly in the video) I use Photo Style and White Balance changes sometimes if I plan to shoot some slow motion video as part of a photoshoot. I have no problem editing RAW files but I know nothing about editing colours and contrast on video. So if I change to portrait style it is more so that I can produce pieces of video that will better match the still photos. I believe that photo style etc. does have an effect on the outcome of a high-speed (slow motion) video clip. I'm glad you found something useful regarding constant preview. It's funny no matter how much we learn there is always something new to discover. This was one of the features they showed me in the shop, so when I got my new camera it was one of the first items I went looking for in the menu. Cheers.

@@naturesimagephotography yes, the photo styles will indeed have an impact on the video. Now I just need to get myself a long lens... for some reason the birds aren't too keen on me asking them to hold still while I get close enough for my 12-60 to be of any use :D

hi, I purchased G9, just a technical question, while in manual mode, you can not change the aperture from the camera, you only set the aperture from the lens. is that correct? thank you.
@naturesimagephotography
@naturesimagephotography 3 года назад
No that is not correct most of the time. On both my lenses the aperture is controlled by one of the control dials on the camera. However there are some lenses with a manual aperture ring where the aperture can only be controlled on the lens. So the real answer depends on what lens you are using.
