Hey Junior, Thanks for your suggestions. I'll keep those in mind for future videos. I do have a basic overview of the drive mode in this video about the Lumix G9. Go to about 2:30 in the timeline to see if that helps you get started. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AqK1z8p9-pE.html

Thank you as someone who is just buying a G9, I have found your videos extremely helpful and better than reading the manual!

Thank you. Camera manuals usually don’t explain how to use features from the practical end, they concentrate more on the specs. This gives me lots of topics to make videos on.

Great to hear it. I'm actually planning to make a video about shooting birds in flight. I have a bunch of local birder friends who have specifically requested it. What lenses are you using for your bird photos? My longest is only 35-100mm f/2.8 so I may have to crop. I'm sure you know more about this topic than I do! Cheers!

@deniseneuendorf3577 5 лет назад
@@ImageMaven Yay! I use the Leica 100-400 for birding. You'll probably find the 35-100 way too short and will crop, but I doubt you will get a good result from that. It may end up extremely noisy. But I am looking forward to your video!

Very helpful video. I’m a former G85 user who recently upgraded to a G9 and I want to make sure I’m making use of all the upgrades! Panasonic included so many features with the G9 that it’s easy to get overwhelmed.
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 6 лет назад
Glad to hear this was helpful. There are tons of new features in the G9. I'm still learning to use them myself. I do love the SH1 and SH2 burst modes for ultra fast subjects. But now I mostly use the normal High speed burst because it's rare that I can't get the shot in 12fps, plus I'm not a fan of the distortion that sometimes happens with the electronic shutter. Saves a ton of memory card space too, especially if you shoot large jpgs. Thanks for watching. Have fun with your G9.
@HighDefinitionOptics
@HighDefinitionOptics 6 лет назад
I am thinking of upgrading to the G9 from the G85 too. Is it worth the uprade? I am mostly doing spor (skiiing) videos and photos.
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 6 лет назад
The Lumix G9 is significantly higher in price. If you feel you are missing shots, and/or doing this to make money, and/or have the means, then yes, upgrade to the G9. But if you're a hobbyist, doing photography for fun, and on a limited budget, the Lumix G85 should be fine for a couple more years. It's still a very new camera. Spend money on a faster lens, or a longer lens instead, as I imagine with skiing you could use more reach. If you upgrade your camera body in the future, you will have those lenses in your bag. I still take a significant amount of photos with my tiny GM5 which is 3+ year old technology, because it's small and handy and easy to have with me all the time. So more features are not always better. The key is, can you get the shot.
@HighDefinitionOptics
@HighDefinitionOptics 6 лет назад
Thanks for the advice. Focus is not always on point with my G85. I am already using 12-35 and 35-100 f2.8 so i guess there is no need for upgrade those. The thing i dont like with the G85 is that i only get 9fps for about 2 seconds in raw. I think with the G9 i wouldnt have the problem with the better AF and higher speed so...
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 6 лет назад
Yes, I do like the SH1 and SH2 (electronic shutter) burst modes of the G9 but even on regular high speed burst 12fps (mechanical shutter) it usually does the trick. I don't shoot raw very much since switching to Lumix, and never for sports. Try shooting jpg and see if the camera is more responsive. That could be part of it. Also your memory card may be too slow for what you need. But I have a couple videos on the burst modes ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-P7MIg5tGCuw.html and a video on memory cards ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Uh9h2yZnUNQ.html which might help. Sounds like you're pretty tech savvy, so the Memory card one might be redundant for you. Just trying to save you money! Let me know if any of this helps. Cheers!

@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 4 года назад
The 4K/6K burst modes are limited in size to the 4K and 6K pixel dimensions. But the 4K can capture up to 60frames per second. The High Speed Burst modes can be used for higher resolution files, but cannot capture as fast.

Excellent, Marlene. Question using burst mode in AFC with back-button focus (BBF) . . . Do you need to press BBF (Fn1 in my case) SIMULTANEOUSLY with the burst shutter to maintain continuous focus, or just press BBF once and the G9 will know to maintain continuous focus since you have it set to AFC and not AFS? I'm thinking I need to press both BFF and shutter at the same time throughout the burst but I'm not certain. Thanks in advance and for your excellent videos and Happy New Year (2020)!

I haven't had this exact situation and it's cold and windy here today, so I can't test it with a moving subject right now. As usual, I suggest you test this yourself. You will know if it works. You'll need a bit of practice to get all the muscle memory going for this scenario, anyhow. And everyone and every situation is a bit different than what I can test for you. Have fun learning.

This is fine, everyone shows this, but no one shows how to SAVE one picture and say delete the rest. How can I save an individual photo from the burst?
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 3 года назад
I download the bursts to my computer using Lightroom, and choose the frames I want to keep from there. You can see them bigger that way too. With 4K and 6K Bursts (and other 4K, 6K features), you can extract the frame you want from the MP4 file right in the camera, or do it in LR or Photoshop. Hope that helps.

You might be able to play with the stop motion settings to get that. I've done that for self portraits and remote shooting, but not on burst mode. But if you set the time to be faster between shots it might work. Or you can try using the Panasonic image app on your phone, and use the electronic shutter release. That's probably the simplest set up.

Hi Marlene, How do hit focus in burst mode? I have tried it, and most images are missing focus. Thanks!
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 4 года назад
I usually use AFS on my Lumix cameras. You can half-press the shutter button to see what area will be in focus, or set up back button focus. But I sometimes pre-focus on a spot where the subject is going to be moving towards and compose ahead of time. So in the case of skateboarding, which I mostly shoot, I'll tap the LCD with my finger, and then wait for the subject to get there. Everyone finds the way that's best for them. Takes some practice too. Hopefully you can find a moving subject -- friends, pet, etc. to work with on this.

Thanks for the helpful video, Marlene. What factors go into your decision to shoot in burst mode v. 6k/4k photo? And perhaps in one of your upcoming videos you could briefly discuss the difference between electronic and mechanical shutter and their advantages/disadvantages. Glad to see spring is finally coming your way!
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 6 лет назад
Honestly, I use the regular burst modes 99% of the time. I find there is too much of a lag waiting for the 4K or 6K bursts to write to the memory card and I end up losing shots especially if it's a situation where I'm shooting people one after the other... such as a running race or skateboarding event where there's lots of action a few seconds apart over and over. So happy to have your suggestions for future videos. Those are going on my list. Thank you for your comments. :) Yes spring is here! Yay! Hopefully the leaves will be on the trees soon too.

Hi Marlene, great video as always. One point I have to mention regarding Pre-Burst is, I back button focus and you say to use the half shutter for this pre-burst. My camera is set to take the shots on Half Shutter, so how can I get around this apart from reverting to normal half shutter focus???
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 6 лет назад
Hi Lloyd, If you're using the Lumix G9, you could use the function lever on the front right corner of the camera. You can set it up to turn the half shutter on or off. It would be handy for all sorts of situations, not just the pre-burst.

Enjoying the vids and subscribed, recently upgraded from GH3 to G9, what settings would you recommend for capturing my sled dogs running? Many thanks
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 3 года назад
Hi Scott, Any settings you would use for action photos will work. Fast shutter speed is a must. You might have to raise your ISO to compensate for faster shutter speed. If they are running towards you try tracking focus. But that's different than if they are running across in front of you. My best advice, try various focus methods and see what brings best results. But it will take a lot of practice, especially if you are new to any camera system no matter what brand. You might also try Back Button Focus. My video on that is here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EoThvQVWEx4.html Have fun!

Marlene - I'm just getting back to camera use and have the G9. I have family coming over tomorrow and I plan to us a tripod for some grout photos. I wanted to set the camera to " bracket" and set the timer for 10 seconds - can you do both or is it easier to use some kind of 'burst" mode. I tried to use menu set to set the timer but could not get it to work. using the mode feature on the top timed ok, but how do I get it to time and bracket or maybe just time and 6K?? Thanks
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 5 лет назад
A trick you can try is using stop motion. Set it to take a photo every 5 seconds or so. Don't use bracketing. Figure out your proper exposure first (without you in the frame) and then set up the stop motion on automatic. I do this for self-portraits. I have a video about stop motion here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ywtGUKTWV_g.html

Are you using auto focus tracking as well with these photos? How do you keep a subject in focus as they move thru the frame? Do you have your cameras to AFC? I'd like to be able to take photos of birds in flight.
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 5 лет назад
I use AFS for all my skateboarding photos - even in the HS Burst modes. The Lumix G9 is great at nailing the focus of moving subjects. Plus, with a wide angle lens such as the 7-14mm, you get good depth of field so it's rare I get an out of focus shot, especially when shooting with lots of light, as I usually do. I've never tried photos of birds in flight. I say start experimenting. A lot of it has to do with finding the subject and then locking on and panning along with your bird. That's a lot harder with a long lens, which I suspect you may be using. But you can touch the back of the screen or use the joystick to choose the area you want in focus. Practice using different focus settings. AFC is best for subjects coming towards you or away from you, as opposed to flying by. And set up Back Button Focus if you need it, depending on how you hold your camera and if you're using a monopod with your long lens. Go some place where there are lots of birds, any kind of birds. Start practicing and find out what works best for you. That's what I do when I'm learning new things. It will get imprinted in your muscle memory that way. Have fun!

But I still have questions, indeed I see everywhere 'super 60fps mode' or 'super 20 fps AF-C mode' but I never see the image size associated to these modes. I know we can do a 12-fps burst with mechanical shooter in 20 MPX, and 20-fps burst with AF-C with electronic shutter, but 30 fps and 60 fps (whith what kind of AF btw ?) ? And what image size can we have with SH1 and SH2 ? In fact, I would like to know every Image size for each burst mode before buying it ^^ Thank you ! Good continuation
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 6 лет назад
Wow I sure did miss some important stuff! Thanks for your questions! So in the Lumix G9, SH1 and SH2 can be set at any of the regular image size settings. Small, Medium and Large (20MP). AND also RAW! Yes, I couldn't believe it myself. Of course at the Large jpg and Raw setting you will fill up your memory cards very fast and it will take some time to dump all those files into the memory card, but not as long as 6K bursts. I shot my tests in AFS (which I do think I mentioned in my video). And SH1 and SH2 also use the electronic shutter. With the H, M and L bursts you have the option of Mechanical or Electronic shutter. Hope that helps. And thanks again. I think I need a second video on this topic to get through all this tech stuff.

Hello Marlene, With spring fast approaching I would like to go out and shoot cloud to ground or cloud to cloud lightning. Would you suggest shooting pre burst to get the entire shot. I realize you can do frame by frame advances, but how do you pull one shot out to publish. TIA BTW Love your site here.
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 5 лет назад
Hi Ralph, I think that pre-burst would definitely be worth testing out. keep in mind the slowest shutter speed you can use in that mode is 1/60s. You can pull out the frames in the camera and wifi or bluetooth transfer them to your phone (like I demonstrate) or in your favourite image editing program such as LR or Luminar. Both apps would support the type of sorting you're looking for. You can test all that out before you go out shooting so that you're prepared. Also if it's hot, pre-burst may not work if the camera over heats. Make sure you read up on all of this in your camera manual. I suggest getting a copy of the Advanced Features camera manual. You can download it from the Panasonic website. Let me know how it goes. I'm curious if this will work. help.panasonic.ca/viewing/ALL/DC-G9P/OI/dvqp1402za/dvqp1402za.pdf

Hi Marlene. I'm wondering how to playback a high speed burst on my monitor via my PC to evaluate individual 18 mp frames to save the decisive moment. I am ok with reviewing in camera but would prefer the larger images via my monitor.

LR works great. That's what I use when not reviewing "in camera". Also any video playback app will work too.

Hi Marlene :) I am getting brave recently and trying more features of my camera. I am finding the 8K/4K Pre-Burst mode is capturing birds in flight with a higher percentage than singe shots, but I am not happy with my focus when cropping. I plan on trying the I and II High Speed burst modes instead, but would prefer to do bursts with mechanical shutter instead of electronic shutter to see if that improves my pictures' focus when cropping. Do you know if L(Low Speed) and/or M(Medium Speed) options for I or II "burst modes" give me manual shutter pictures and increase my likelihood for better focus with a mechanical shutter? I am going out in a few minutes today to give it a try. Let's hope I can find some cooperating birds.

There is a chart in the owner's manual. Page 115 in the English PDF (link to it is in video description). But the short answer is H, M, L use mechanical shutter. SH1, SH2 use electronic. For my use, H (12 fps in jpg) is more that enough. But I'm mostly shooting fast moving people, not fast moving birds. Sometimes you just have to shoot a lot of frames to see what works best for you. Maybe Back Button Focus would also help as you can focus with your thumb and hit the shutter with your fore finger.

For some reason my burst mode M or H is stopping after 2 - 3 shots. It used to work fine. Any ideas?

Maybe the buffer is full. Have you changed to a slower speed memory card? Shooting RAW instead of jpg?

No and No I do have a second body that is working so time to swap cards and compare the settings! Using a 200 lens

can somebody please answer this: can this camera shoot bursts with a hot shoe flash? Please don't tell me lumix cameras dont do this. I have a GX85 that does. I am using a generic hot shoe flash and need a bigger camera (additional to my GX85) that can do bursts with hot shoe flash. Thanks!!!

Take your flash to a camera shop, ask to see a G9, and test it out for yourself.
@knowitallandtravel

@@ImageMaven that would be the logical thing to do except that where i live there are no lumix dealers. I was hoping somebody with the camera could just tell me.

How do I get out of burst mode??

Take the dial off burst mode and back to single shot mode. If that doesn't work, try following the steps in the video in reverse!

Hi Marlene, sorry to bother you mate. I'm a sports photographer (football) using the Lumix G9 with my Leica DG 100-400. I've been shooting in the AFC mode, in Burst Mode SH2, RAW & JPEG at 1/1300sec in Shutter priority mode and using 1 Area AF Mode. I'm looking for a solution as I'm not getting consistent focusing and its jumping to background then to my subject. I never had these issues with my Canon 7D MKII. I've successfully updated the firmware of the Camera Body to V1.2 and the lens to V1.1 I'm puzzled as to what's going wrong with my settings and why I'm not getting consistent images of my subjects with the focus jumping from the Background to my moving subject. I note that I have my O.I.S Power turned on the lens and AF also. If you have any advise on the settings and how I can rectify this issue I'd be greatful. Respectfully, Dean Radz

Try the multi point focussing. 1 point focus is really hard to keep on a moving subject. Also just for fun, try AFS. Is use it all the time on my skateboarding shots. Never lets me down and my subjects are moving faster than football players. Trust the camera. Don't overthink. Keep trying. Experiment and practice with some friends throwing a ball around to work out what's best. Also go to page 91 in the English pdf owner's manual and that shows you how to adjust the predictive focus. This camera is very smart. Trust it to do the job. I switched from Canon 5D Mk2 over 5 years ago and it took me awhile to get used to the Lumix way. Stick with it.
